Most of my extended family come to my house every Thanksgiving and Christmas. My family does indeed “look like America”, as far as politics goes. Its wonderful to hear pro-union, anti-Republican talk from my older generation relatives, because they lived in a time when family members worked in Thread Mills under near slave conditions. My grandfather painted cars during the depression in a basement with only high, small casement windows. He died of conditions very similar to Alzheimer’s, except that it wasn’t. The solvents, etc. got to him, and he paid for it later in life. They also talk of wishing there was more God around. They don’t exactly say “God” (well, my Aunt Mary does, but she goes to mass every day. EVERY DAY). They talk of how someone doesn’t leave his family as so often happens today. They say that schools have no business teaching about sex and which lifestyle should be acceptable. They say that people should be helping people. They say that the Ten Commandments are the moral laws that we should govern ourselves by. Internally, not as a government mandate. They either are all, or all lean toward the Democrat Party. They do not like George Bush.
I say its wonderful to listen to this, because I realize that, coming from whence they came, I would probably be a Democrat pro-unionist myself. We needed something that would stand up to the worst abuses of labor and say: “You cannot treat people like this”. With the depression lasting a long and crippling time, one could understand the people looking toward Government for more help. It seemed as though there wasn’t a lot of difference in how we saw things, but we looked at them from different directions.
I wonder if this isn’t something similar to the phrase “Classical Liberalism” as Jeff states it. Dad fought on a Submarine in WW II, Mom was a USO girl. My Aunt Bee was working as a nurse’s aid the day of the Hartford Circus Fire. My uncle’s best freind saved over a hundred people when, at the age of seven, I think, took out his jacknife and cut a new opening in the burning tent. The character that they had, and the experiences that were thrust upon them, tempered a tough exterior. The empathy they feel for the less fortunate is shaped by the understanding of someone who has lived that life.
Most of these people vote democrat. They always did. They always will. The odd ting is, they understand why we are in Iraq, even though they (as folks who went through War themselves) chafe at the thoughts of putting America’s youth through anything like they, themselves experienced. They also know that people need to pull themselves out of the holes they find themselves in. They are also vehemently anti illegle immigration. If you allow for changes in time and standard of living, I’m not all that different in my thinking than they are. We vote for different candidates almost all the time.
Then there’s cousin Jimmy, who is pretty much a moonbat, and cousin Cathy, who finds the most hiilarious anti-right animations and sends them on to me, taunting. Cousin Doug puts the Neanderthal in Ted Kennedy’s vocabulary, and sometimes the extra chromosome in Al Gore’s chromosomally gifted right. Doug, however can slice through a lib weenie comment like a fart through the ozone. There is no equal.
I am thankful for all of them. I am thankful to Jeff, for having the insane humor and rational analysis he does. Iam thankfull for you commenters (well, alsmost all of you) who can put thought into words well above your pay scale (at least your pay scale from Jeff). I am not thankful for pay-pal, the bastards.
The corn, stuffing, and cranberry sauce have all fallen to our onslaught. We took some casualties, most of whom are on the couch sleeping have been medevac’d out of the combat area. For the most part, only mop-up operations remain.
The turkey, however, resisted our best efforts. Our forces are digging in now, and are contemplating a week-long siege to conquer this last citadel. Godspeed, troops.
No Prisoners!!!
All your cranberry sauce are belong to us!
Happy Thanksgiving, all!
May your turkey be stuffed with m’academias. Enjoy the day!
Egads, I’m stuffed.
A second slice of pecan pie?
Why not?
Happy Thanksgiving, all.
BECAUSE OF THE MARSHMALLOW TOPPING!
tw: “farm” -> where turkeys are conspicuously absent today.
