Home sweet home [updated; new posts below]

I’m back in town and after some food shopping will likely collapse and ride the next day or two out on life’s bench.

I’m not sure if it’s the stress of all that’s happening or if something more specific is leaving feeling perpetually under the weather, but as I noted earlier my own health has been in the subpar range over the past few weeks. And as I now have to begin probate duties, I don’t see an end in sight — at least for the next couple weeks.

That said, I’d like to thank each of you who has contributed to my call for aid. Your generosity has certainly helped lift what was an additional and unforeseen burden. It was only 29 days between my Mom’s being admitted to the hospital for leg pain until her death. What was originally a 2-6 month prognosis turned on a dime: it was 20 days from the discovery of the cancer to my flying in and putting together the funeral arrangements the day before the burial.

And then to find out my brother was calling the funeral home on the day of the service to try to have a death certificate released to him so he could collect on a life insurance policy he purchased on her after having cashed out her prior policy and naming himself sole beneficiary on the new policy — well, that was the rotten cherry on top of the shit sundae.

So again, thanks to all of you for your kind words and prayers. My mother didn’t suffer. That’s a blessing.

Special thanks to the following folks for their financial generosity:

update: I’m working over the next few days to close out any remaining open accounts in my Mom’s name that I can find as well as to find out information about pension payments left her by my father — whether they continue to the estate or cease upon my Mother’s death.

As executor I have to deal with all aspects of probate, which is grueling.

On the positive front, I reached out to the Baltimore detective today and she’s going to use some of her leave time to contact all the people who are lining up to tell their stories about the abuse my mother suffered at the hands of my brother — all of which reaches full relief as the different experiences of the different friends and neighbors and health care workers are cobbled together.

Evidently, my brother had the gall to troll for sympathy on facebook and deleted comments from people who excoriated him. Personally, I can’t even see the posts because he’s had me blocked; but I’ve received notice from others who were appalled by his phony mourning — especially given the fact that he spent the morning of the funeral trying to pressure the funeral home to release to him a death certificate so he could cash out “his” money. He’s listed under Steven Michael Goldstein, I believe. Feel free to leave him a message!

Also, I want to take this opportunity to send out thanks for additional support received from readers, who deserve to be recognized:

I feel like I’m a friend to the grass roots, as nearly all of the names here have come from those who have no big time blogs, have no advertising deals with the GOP or other GOP friendly institutions, and are merely just people looking to get their country back. Which tells me that my marginalization didn’t have the desired affect some of my detractors hoped it would.

Again, thank you all so much, and I’ll keep you updated as I go forward. I will be, once the probate is in order, the plaintiff against my brother. Which, that’s always fun!

Were you able to stop him getting the DC?

  2. Darleen says:

Hang in there, boss, IMHO (since I’m not a doctor but I stayed at a Holiday Inn) the inordinate amount of stress you’ve been under lately is what is affecting your health.

You’ve been over the past several months doing life events that cause stress. Moving into a new home is one of the top stress events, even if a happy one.

What ever you can do to relieve it — go to the gym, run, etc — is great! Just know that it will pass eventually and we all have your back.

  3. palaeomerus says:

Yeah, Jeff get out of the wind for a while and recover. Your boys need their dad healthy.

  4. sdferr says:

Somehow it’s difficult to imaging this Broncos’ game as helping all that much on the anxiety front. The promise of a coming turkey sandwich, on the other hand, might be just the thing.

  5. bbeck says:

You’re a good son and a decent person. Take care of your family, but don’t forget to take care of yourself.

  6. newrouter says:

    some humor for you:

    > “How awesome would it be if Warren gets the DNC nod and Rick Perry gets the RNC nod? Cowboys and Indians! (Sort of…).”<

  7. Jeff G. says:

That would make for some good Billy Jack fodder, nr.

McGehee — stopped him for the time being but in the end it’s public, so he’ll eventually be able to get it. Which sucks because he’ll have cashed it before I can find out where it’s from.

  8. serr8d says:

Ahhhh, SCOTUS gets a ‘writer’s intent’ social media threat-case.

I’d bring a tree. For to sit on the stump, and watch, is all.. )

  9. McGehee says:

There’s an obligation on the author to signal intent effectively. If all he was doing was blowing off steam, he signalled … poorly.

  10. McGehee says:

Or as The Virginian told Trampas, “When you call me that, smile.”

The Virginian’s own intent was signalled quite effectively, since he placed his gun on the table as he spoke.

  11. bh says:

    Good that you’re home, Jeff.

Hey, not to be overly repetitive but I reckon the people saying to take care of yourself a bit here is worthwhile advice. This has to be more than a little stressful. Hitting the heavy bag or taking a walk with the kids once daily sounds medicinal to me.

So often the next part of this story is “then I had pneumonia for a couple months”.

  12. palaeomerus says:

My mom, who can’t walk anymore, asked me to go to HEB Plus ( an expanded grocery store trying to be a local Walmart/SAMS competitior) to buy her a $90 food processor because her hands hurt and she can’t hand chop peppers anymore.

I no longer work Mondays or Tuedays because “the economy” is “booming” under “die Beleuchtungwerker”.

So I went to HEB Plus a searchin’ for this critter.

I drove to the easiest to find store in Kyle, TX. It’s about twenty miles out and twenty back. While there I got some frozen stuffed chicken fritters, some toilet paper, some olive oil(we had a bad olive crop so I’m stocking up), and a piece of salmon in a roasting pan with some sliced potatoes and brussels sprouts.

The thing is they get lots of free shopping bags in Kyle because their city government did not see fit to force the purchase of unsanitary reusable bags to be lugged around by shoppers or bought at $.25 a pop from the register. I was all set to ask for two bags and the register lady looked at me sadly and told me that bags were free and I’d get as many as wanted with my order. She knew where I was from and didn’t say anymore.

Yeah. I felt like an East German who had made it across the border but had to go back only less so because there is no real iron curtain or secret police to worry about.

And that conclude my little drama or small cuts for the day.

I sure do whine a lot.

I don’t live in Texas. I live in a parasite that infests Texas. I must remember that.

  14. bour3 says:

Glad to have you back in one piece. Jeff, I am so sorry all this happened .

I believed my own sister to be unbearably toxic. But now after reading about your own sib I must revise my attitude about mine.

I do wish I could give more, but I am but a poor boy and my story’s seldom told for I have squandered my resistance on a pocket full of mumbles such are prom … hang on. Sorry, that was somebody else. I got mixed up there. I’m all verklempt.

Have a nice holiday. Best wishes to you and your beautiful family.

  15. bour3 says:

Also airplanes make people sick. I know people who get sick every time they fly but fly they do fly anyway, fly fly fly, just to fly. Grandma sneezed! *flies to grandma* That’s insane, given the additional abuse one suffers.

  16. Jeff G. says:

Yeah, I’m afraid something more serious is going on with me. I have to find a new doctor. Went to see mine last week and it turns out he’d died of liver cancer.

The fact that he didn’t see it coming is worrying me.

  17. bh says:

A doctor’s appointment sounds like a good idea. Find out that you’re healthy and maybe that sets your mind at ease for that aspect. (Right? Cause most likely you are fundamentally healthy. You’re probably okay. Odds are.)

Ehhh, I suppose what I’m thinking is that this must be pretty damn depressing so maybe also take care that way too.

  18. Jeff G. says:

Doctor’s appointment made for Friday. Switching docs now that mine has passed on. Some place much closer to home.

Thought I had a stomach bug but it’s lasting a few weeks (my wife and son have both had issues, as well), but mine is coupled with aches in my left leg and pain in my left side near the kidney / pelvis, as well as an occasional dull pain in the lower left part of my abdomen. I’m going to demand full ultrasound imaging and from there, whatever tests I can get to identify the source of the problem. We’ve reached our ridiculous deductible and have about a month left to get this testing and diagnostic work in.

Had a urine sample taken when I was at the doctor’s office two weeks ago and never heard a word back. Maybe they’re just fetishists.

  19. epador says:

You’re too far away for an exam but I can offer free advice medically any time. Good luck on the check ups. A good internist or an FP that knows what they’re doing ought to be able to figure you out. [I use an EMR system (athenahealth) that lets patient sign on to their chart any time, see lab and x-ray results, send and receive messages, request refills, etc. If you can find someone with that kind of connectivity it will save you a lot of time waiting for call backs for results.] Make sure they actually make you take off your clothes and examine you. Unless they think it is a kidney source, the US is a waste of time and $$.

If your stomach bug was the runs, residual irritation in the lower bowel of some kind could be the issue. Might need a look see (CT and or colonoscopy).

If you were constipated, that might explain it all. Except some of your detractors would say, “see, I knew he was full of…”

  20. palaeomerus says:

Wednesday work is canceled. Too many people called in “sick” to get anything done. Friday is off.

So I guess no work this week. I’m putting in vacation so I get paid something. Ha Ha.

    Ha.

  21. palaeomerus says:

My boss left a 2nd voicemail to stay away from downtown tonight because protesters are marching. Looks like he left that at about 6:00pm. I live in a city with a grapevine now.

  22. epador says:

Paleo – dang, my receptionist just called in too. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the schools being closed today. Worse than Ebola.

  23. Jeff G. says:

Urine sample was normal. Does that rule out kidney / prostititis?

  24. epador says:

rule out a strong phrase. make unlikely, yes.

  25. Mueller says:

Alas. I can only offer you moral support t this time. Being financially embarrassed.
    And a Happy Thanksgiving!

And, ya know, that thing. With that guy. In case that other thing don’t improve.
