Members of the jihadist collective in Lone Wolf clothing [Darleen Click]

The phrase “lone wolf” is about as credible as “workplace violence.”

When I last wrote about this subject, I called them “homegrown” terrorists, the phrase of the month a year and a half ago. Back then, such imaginary monsters were bombing marathons; today they are shooting Canadian parliamentarians and security guards, and attacking NYPD guys with their jihadi axes.

It doesn’t really matter what you call them, because they’re figments of the “expert” imagination. The legend-mavens tell us that there are “normal” Americans (this part is very important) who somehow just go bad, and turn into murderous terrorists. There is no foreign input, no alien country or intelligence service, no global conspiracy. The terrorists are homegrown and they are on their own. Lone wolves. […]

There ARE homegrown terrorists, like the Unabomber, but these aren’t the people we’re talking about just now. Unabomber is a nut, but he’s a distinctly American nut, and definitely a lone wolf. The so-called lone wolves of recent days–the killer in Canada, the axeman in New York, and, we should add, the Oklahama City decapitator–aren’t loners, they’re members. They’ve been inspired by local or online jihadis.

Another thing. These jihadis often turn out to be converts, even “recent converts.”

Words like “convert” often slide past our active attention, but we should focus on them. The act of conversion requires the convert to join a religious community, and may require other actions. Converts to Islam, for example, are usually required to be circumcised, although I find that some online Muslim recruiting sites will tell you that you can avoid it if the thought is just too terrible. The sites do say that you can convert on your own; you don’t have to show up at a mosque to become a Muslim, all you have to do is swear an oath to Allah.

But then you’ve got to participate. And since the Koran is an Arabic text, you’d best learn some Arabic. The site will guide you to the local mosque where you can pursue your Islamic education.

The point being: converts are the opposite of lone wolves because they need help (do you think they circumcise themselves? Or study Arabic alone?). They are entering a new world–it’s why they are converting, after all–and it behooves us to take a careful look at the psychological dynamics of their transition.

You ever think that if “Lone Wolves” started acting against the interests of the Federal Government, the Government would find a common thread behind their actions? And use it to go after anyone who has ever so much as opined a thought against the Liberal cause du jour?

People taking the initiative and acting alone is what made us a great nation. And if you’re captured, there’s nothing to reveal. — George Washington

Well, at least the Ottawa “lone wolf” proved strict gun control is a joke, so we have that going for us…

  4. cranky-d says:

As usual with progressives and fascists (but I repeat myself) the problem is that the gun control isn’t strict enough.

Plus, guns are really easy to get in the U.S. (they practically give them to you) so what we really need is the same restrictions they have in Canada so that no one will kill other people any more with guns bought in the U.S. because that is probably what happened and even if it wasn’t what happened it sounds plausible so shut up and give up your guns because they are scary.

Patrick Poole and Michael Ledeen make what to my mind are powerful indictments against what begins to look like a general American tradition of ignoring the Islam in the terrorists (. . . Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, ClownDisaster — if not a full-blown tradition at this point, at least the makings of the beginning of one if allowed to continue).

There seem implicit (where not explicit) prescriptions to correction of the bad policy or partisan political motivations to that bad policy contained within these indictments — which, to name the policy as such, I’d suggest tacitly “Don’t see the Islam so there won’t be the Islam” as an anti-echo of the phrase “Don’t start nothin’, there won’t be nothin’ “.

Absurd, of course, if only because the “start” is given life by someone else.

But my question here is: How would we flesh out those implicit prescriptions? Or to put it another way, “what comes next?”

    You’re right of course…*sigh*

Logic hasn’t a chance against an agenda, does it?

Iran joins the nuke club, Israel disappears, followed by Armageddon?

Just kidding. I’m sure everything will be fine.

oh darleen's use of the term "collective" has already a term in regards to islam: ummah/islamic nation. so i did some wiki/google for "catholic".
it is interesting to read of the topic of a "catholic/universalist" faith being discussed from 100-500ad (approx) then in about 700 ad moe puts the hammer down on "universalist faith" . boredom on a sunday night.

Just saw an interview with the lad, who is now 20. He says that if he’d remained in the U.S., he might have more stuff, but he wouldn’t have the love of his father, nor the loving relationship with his abuelo, Fidel. He’s a full-throated supporter of the man who visits his home and invites him to do stuff, including be a delegate to some dang thing in Ecuador. His father, celebrated for not defecting, was given a high position in the government.

So. Who had money on “Fidel will totally co-opt the kid with personal attention until the poor guy doesn’t know which way is up”?

    Cuz you win.

Mark Stein once came under attack for saying that Muslims were the ones doing all the terrorism stuff. His reply was to produce an extensive, documented list of all major terrorist acts over a period of say 20 years. Every one was carried out by guys named Mohamed. I could hear the crickets chirping from here.
People such as the media and John Kerry need to be confronted every time they defend Islam . So , you’re okay with what they did but the Tea Party is the problem? Why do you so vociferously defend the root cause of these actions?
Go on the offensive. Get in their faces and ask why do they act as P.R. firms for Islam every time an atrocity is committed in it’s name by it’s practitioners? Point out the legion of examples of these atrocities. Quote the Koran itself.

CHUCK TODD: Arsalan, what is the role of the American Muslim community in this? Because there are clearly some people that are self-radicalizing, coming in. Maybe they’re newcomers into the Islamic communities. Maybe it’s in a Dearborn, wherever it’s happening. What’s the role of the leadership in these Islamic communities to identify perhaps people that are joining, converting, but not for the right reasons?

ARSALAN IFTIKHAR: Well, Chuck, I think it’s important to keep in mind when you’re talking about groups like ISIS, that we’re not talking about the X Men or the Transformers here. We’re not dealing with Wolverines or Optimus Primes. Essentially, we’re dealing with loner idiots who are sitting in their tighty-whities, in their mother’s basements, playing Call of Duty on their XBox Four.

    Greetings:

This may be a marginal or fine point, or even a marginally fine point, but my understanding is that Muslim “theology” (if that’s what it is) sees all people as being born Muslims, so those who are labeled “converts” by us nasty “kuffars” and such are considered “reverts” by their local Muslim Imammies and Idaddies.

That being said, Islam is the millstone. It is nothing more than the globalization of 7th Century predatory Arab tribal culture under a thin veneer of religion. And if your plan doesn’t include constraining, undermining, or eradicating Islam, you don’t have a plan. What you have is a hope.

  28. BigBangHunter says:

What you have is a hope.

    – Apparently the asinine memes of the Left, where anything that’s counter common sense is embraced with relish have morphed into Rhino viruses, wherein they can change when the wind doesn’t blow in a “useful” way.

    – Media hacks are now calling them “stray dogs” instead of lone wolves because the laughter was getting too loud. All of it, of course, is to protect the little asshole king. There can be no terrorist attacks on his watch. I personally hope their association with the liars of Progressivism scars them all for life.

  30. dicentra says:

Saying that ISIS is not Muslim is like saying that the Nazis weren’t Germans.

Oh yes they were: they were hyper-German, and they could prove it, chapter and verse.

Likewise, ISIS is hyper-Muslim. The difference being that “German” just means “associated with the geographical region the Romans called “Germania.” There’s nothing inherent to Deutchland that points to fascism.

But ISIS can justify their actions by pointing to the Quran and the Hadith. Most Muslims aren’t down with that interpretation, but then, those Muslims aren’t willing to behead anyone who disagrees with them.

  31. There’s nothing inherent to Deutchland that points to fascism.

You haven’t met my Mother, Di.

As I wrote in Volume I of my unauthorized autobiography:

My mother, Cosima Antigone Valkyrie Teuton Ziffel was born in Wampum,Kansas of German, English, Scots-Irish, and Cherokee descent [two of her ancestors were the famous Tom Collins and his wife, Vodka]. The environment on the fruited plains made her grow into a very tough young woman. They took the whole Indian Nation, left her on this-a reservation — maybe someday when they’ve learned, the Cherokee Nation will return. In the mid-1930’s, she became an intimate advisor to Herr Hitler and loyally served under him until 1943, despite the fact that she thought it very odd that he would sometimes show up at meetings dressed in lederhosen, demand to be called “Ziggy”, and ask her ‘How sour is my Kraut, today’. Also, she says, that he had the annoying habit of ending their conversations by slapping his forehead with the palm of his hand and exclaiming: “Oh! Acht tu leiber, I could und had und V8!” [it seems the Führer had had a chance to buy Ford Motor Company in the late 1920’s, was told it was a bad investment by the late Claus Von Oomphberg, and had deeply regretted the decision ever since.]. Because of these two things and many others, Mother Dear determined that Hitler was not tough enough [this was confirmed in April 1945]. She then went and served under Comrade Stalin until 1946, when she realized that, he too, was a wuss [she always told me when I was a child while she bounced me on her knee: ‘Always remember: Uncle Joe is a schmo’]. Mother Dear then returned to Kansas to seek out the man of her dreams, but ended up marrying my father, who, at the time, was struggling to start a career in radio and was reduced to selling used pajamas to Mummers.
