Speaking of tremendous sucking sounds, briefly silenced.

Shlaes, of course, also wrote a wonderful book that strongly details the relevant information about Hoover.

I’d also recommend reading Titan by Chernow about Rockefeller to see exactly how pervasive the idea of central planning (even within the business community) was with these sorts during this time.

There were technocrats everywhere and the trustbusters weren’t even against them. They just wanted public trusts instead.

  4. bh says:

Heck, this book is also surprising informative to get a feel for the spirit of the age.

I also recommend the graphic novel edition [The Forgotten Man Graphic Edition: A New History of the Great Depression] which is quite nicely done.

  6. bh says:

Shlaes is pretty bad ass that way. Hayek would be proud.

After seeing polls about how only a third of Americans can even name the branches of government nowadays it makes me wonder if we’re even reclaiming history.

What percentage of Americans could name a relevant fact about FDR at this point? [My guess is that they’d say “WWII” if anything.] About LBJ? [My guess is they’d just look blankly.] About Clinton? [“Blowjob.” “Stained dress.”]

OT: LSU calls their stadium “Death Valley,” but death comes to us all. Even so, it never should have gotten as close as it did.

    Mississippi State 34
    LSU 29

…and it could have gone the other way but M-State intercepted LSU’s last second Hail Mary.

  9. bh says:

To put that better I mean to say that I’m not even sure they even remember the false propaganda anymore.

Is Hoover a laissez faire poor-stomper to the uneducated? Or is he just a shrug and then a look back down to the phone to see if there is a celebrity dick pic to lulz about?

My bet is that they won the historical fight but no one cares at all now unless there is a cat or celebrity porn or “10 things about this celebrity cat porn you won’t believe!” involved.

  10. geoffb says:

Tip to conservative writers, cat porn book covers with tabloid style titles.

  11. bh says:

This is what I worry about, Geoff.

Because that’s how we’ll win the kultur wars today. But there is nothing conservative to be found there.

    Reason.com will be psyched though.

  12. bh says:

If we’re to find any success we’ll find it in tradition. In education. In art. (In those things that can be… cultivated.)

Kultur wants to know which conservative ladies have the phattest asses. And it wants to know in text speak.

  13. bh says:

How do you fight this with a message of probity and proper caution?

  14. guinspen says:

    I feel your pain.

All I can come up with is, we’ll promise to only stick it in an inch and we’ll wear a hat.

    Way to go, Mississippi State!

Hope my Texas Tech Red Raiders can get it together for Thursday’s game at Oklahoma State.

To me, the Gore Effect was proof enough that God has a sense of humor. This is just the sprinkles on the cupcake.

  17. geoffb says:

    Cat porn, but cute.

    – It’s the Collingsworth endless babble so it must be Sunday night.

    – There was a second depression in 38-39 that never gets talked about; we must never tarnish the holy image of FDR. His “New deal” was an utter and total failure. The only thing that saved our asses from 50 years of financial misery was the war. Period. End of story.

    – That means in some ironic way the Axis saved our butts.
