Congrats to Satch, who took home “Grappler of the Year” at tonight’s Wrestling Awards banquet.  He’s been fortunate to have some great coaching over the past couple years, from Joey Gardner to Sonny Yohn (Div I All-American, U of Minn) to Leister Bowling, himself a UFC grappling coach, coach on “The Ultimate Fighter,” and former 3-time State Champion and Colorado State record holder for wins and take downs.

And of course me, some dude who learned a whole lot from Tony Cecchine, who is still the toughest man I’ve ever met.

Great job Satch and great job Warriors — whose 10 and under squad, which I was fortunate enough to help coach this year, took 3rd place in the All-State Team Awards!

Ok, dad, I’ll say it again

You have to revise your blueprints and set up a room just for Satch’s trophies, medals & honors.

    WOOT! Satch!

  2. sdferr says:

Oh so nicely done. And whoa, that guy’s fist looks to be just shy of the volume of Satchel’s head.

Closest I’ve ever come to that was winning a county spelling bee. Didn’t even get invited to the statewide.

  8. Hearty Congratulations, Master Satchel – Well Done.

    Congrats!

BTW, is that a belt or a breastplate?

  14. Slartibartfast says:

    Carvin’s a heavy hitter.

I just had another Facebook friend post a photo of himself with Matt Hughes. Coincidence?

  15. Slartibartfast says:

    err…Carwin.

I seem to remember Dos Santos took him apart. But Carwin was a total warrior and continued to fight hard despite being severely bloodied. Respect.

OT: Bryan Preston had this to say about the Texas primaries last night:

Sen. John Cornyn may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he has racked up a 93% conservative voting record. He has made a mistake or two, notably supporting Crist over Rubio in the Florida Senate race, but overall he has been a better senator than most by some distance. His closest challenger, Rep. Steve Stockman, ran one of the most bizarre, unserious races in modern history. We run the risk sometimes of allowing the perfect to become the enemy of the good, risking in this case handing over a very safe seat upon which a GOP Senate majority can be built to a Democrat challenger. Had Stockman won tonight, that’s what was at risk.

He didn’t, and Cornyn cruised. Not all incumbents deserve to be primaried.

One more thought. By all conservative accounts around the country, Texas is one of the few states that’s doing it right. Well, those who are doing it right in Texas are mostly incumbent Republicans, no? So, again, not all incumbents deserve to be primaried. They don’t deserve to hold seats for life either. But it might be wise to think a bit more strategically about who does and doesn’t deserve the primary treatment.

I disagree. Not all incumbents deserve to lose their primaries, but all incumbents ought to be primaried regularly, if only to keep them a bit more humble and little less dishonest.

Ernst, you must be the one person who “liked” my comment on that thread, saying essentially what you’ve said here.

  18. Ernst Schreiber says:

comment threads don’t load properly on my ol’ slo’ compewtor, so I missed yours

But yeah, I’m tired of people who ought to know better by now continuing to equate “conservative (enough)” with “Republican.”

Hence my link to Sensenbrenner’s asshattery.
