“You got a license for that paint brush?” [Darleen Click]

In the meantime, California’s real crime rates are doubling due to Gov. Moonbeam’s “Prison Realignment” scam (state prisoners kicked to county jails & supervision).

And that’s prior to the 10,000 state prisoners who have to be released by the end of this year.

Doomed.

Some states make it that if you are unregistered, the owner can stiff you on the bill and you have no recourse. Now that is consumer protection!

  2. EBL says:

To be fair, there are a lot of crappy contractors out there doing bad work. And many landscapers do a fair amount of real construction and do crazy things like making water fountains electrical hazards . But California’s contractor testing and regulations are nuts. The best defense is making the contractors be reasonably bonded and insured so if they screw up, a homeowner has some financial recourse.

If all they are doing is raking leaves and cutting grass–there should be no contractor license required.

If someone is coming into my home to do anything that requires specific skills … hanging drywall, installing cabinets, plumbing, etc, I will want to see their license and insurance.

Painting fences, mowing, raking leaves are the kind of jobs that one used to get teenagers to do for some cash.

    :::facepalm:::

  4. Darleen says:

And, oh, a contractor license is NO guarantee of quality work.

Too many people are lulled into a false sense of security on that.

    There’s a Union(s) behind this, I’ll warrant.

But, how does this reconcile with California’s love of illegal immigrants? How many illegals get ‘busted’ for not having a painter’s or contractor’s license?

Wanna bet most of those busted are…gasp! [white male] American citizens? Because California loves it’s illegals, and arresting an illegal isn’t helping advance their causes.

Tinmen! Thanks for leading the way back to the ubiquitous administrative state, Maryland!

Try collecting on that bond. The people who put up bonds will stonewall paying, and the cost of legal action is usually more than the bond is worth.

Anyway, Reason didn’t catch the irony when they mentioned muggers and murderers being more slightly more dangerous than an unlicensed contractor/landscaper.

Why do you think the cops don’t mind targeting people who aren’t likely to put up a fuss? Plus, there probably aren’t enough muggings, robberies and murders to justify the number of cops we have in CA. So, CA has written legislation that creates more crimes in order to justify more cops.

  9. Darleen says:

About that murder rate in Los Angeles …

and you know you’re dealing with people who can’t outthink their pumpkin latte with lines like this …

Crime rates are close to mid-60s’ levels. But incarceration rates have increased five-fold.

Yeah, having criminals behind bars has no effect on crime rates …

    Darleen,

The NY Times published a similar piece a decade ago or so that expressed the same puzzlement over the declining crime rate in NYNY while incarcerations were up.

    Bob

My parents and in-laws are elderly and we don’t want to be a full state away. Otherwise we’d be outta here.

:::sigh::: What has happened to the state I was born in?

If my father didn’t live there I would never go back. He doesn’t want to leave, and that’s fine.

Same boat here. I’ve living thousands of miles away from my folks for 35 years. They won’t leave and I’d never move back. It’s a drag just to visit. My beautiful Golden State is Land o’ Legislation & Statutes now.

The people that love illegal immigrants aliens don’t see them becoming contractors. They see them as field workers picking cotton fruit, and cheap maids/yardworkers.

    And future D voters.

They aren’t ultraistic, they are frustrated would be slavers.

  19. LBascom says:

Oh, and they ren’t restricted to California. They are wherever there are elitist pricks. Otherwise known as Progressives.

On a lighter note, that ad for poo-pourri at the beginning of the video cracked me up.
