HOUSTON—Thousands of refugees of Hurricane Katrina were transported to the Astrodome in Houston this week. In an extreme act of looting, one group actually stole a bus to escape ravaged areas in Louisiana.
About 100 people packed into the stolen bus. They were the first to enter the Houston Astrodome, but they weren’t exactly welcomed.
The big yellow school bus wasn’t expected or approved to pass through the stadium’s gates. Randy Nathan, who was on the bus, said they were desperate to get out of town.
“If it werent for him right there,” he said, “we’d still be in New Orleans underwater. He got the bus for us.”
Eighteen-year-old Jabbor Gibson jumped aboard the bus as it sat abandoned on a street in New Orleans and took control.
“I just took the bus and drove all the way here...seven hours straight,’ Gibson admitted. “I hadn’t ever drove a bus."…
Authorities eventually allowed the renegade passengers inside the dome.
But the 18-year-old who ensured their safety could find himself in a world of trouble for stealing the school bus.
“I dont care if I get blamed for it ,” Gibson said, “as long as I saved my people.”
Sixty legally chartered buses were expected to arrive in Houston throughout the night. Thousands of people will be calling the Astrodome “home,” at least for now.
That’s not stealing and that’s not looting. This is beyond ridiculous. That’s heroism. If this kid gets arrested for being a fucking hero and single-handedly saving 100 people, then I am laying the blame on the feet of every stupid asshole who complained about looting.
In the meantime, according to PEEK, Fox News is having trouble perpetuating the lie that BushCo intends to raise a finger to save the life of a single poor black Southerner. Geraldo Rivera broke down crying and reporters from New Orleans on Fox are all but accusing the federal government of lying to people, promising them help and then reneging on that promise.
And as for the racist fucks behind this foot-dragging and lying and all those that support them, I hope that when you get to hell, after you’ve been greeted nicely by Satan and checked in by Ronald Reagan, your punishment is to be drowned over and over and over again until you fucking realize that suffering is suffering, no matter what race or class or ethnicity the people suffering are.
This entire situation isn’t “raising questions” about race in America. It’s answering them.
I’ll agree with that last bit, Amanda—though I don’t think you’re going to like the “answers” as they play out here.
First, as Andrea Harris points out in your comments, the idea that anti-looting, racist rightwingers are calling for Jabbor Gibson’s head is ludicrous. As Andrea notes, we “racist fucks” are quite able to tell the difference between “a kid taking desperate measures to rescue people, and thieves stealing wide screen tvs and jewelry.”
But what is most interesting about your post, Amanda, is that it is itself quite baldly racist, as I took the time to point out in your comments:
Wait, who exactly is the racist here—the people who “complained” about looting? Or the Amanda Marcotte so desperate to show her progressive bona fides that she assumed that all looters were black, and so that all those complaining about looters must be complaining about blacks?
I’m very ready for this conversation; identity politics is an anti-American impulse (in that it eschews the individual in favor of a manufactured group identity), and people like you, Amanda, aren’t showing yourself to be progressive so much as you’re showing yourself to be a patronizing White Guilt Liberal.
And a backdoor racist, to boot.
Addendum: Thus far, neither Amanda nor her amen corner have responded, but when they do, you can bet it’s with some dodge about years of institutionalized racism, poverty, etc—arguments parroted directly from the race demagogues, in whose interests it is to keep racial strife alive.
It has always been the technique of demagogue joiners like Marcotte to buy themselves cheap grace by loudly “defending” the Other in such a way that their condemnations, they believe, differentiate them from the vast majority of those only superficially “like them” to whom they’ve been taught to ascribe base motives and racist thoughts. It is a selfish and self-important impulse.
And it is an ironic one, as well. Because it is Marcotte’s crass, color-conscious paternalism that suggests an underlying racism, in that it commits her, in her rush to outrage, to the position that those who criticized looting were necessarily criticizing a particular race.
That is, in her rush to label others racist, she forgot to wait until they actually made racist claims. So she herself made one and, to hide the smudge on her own soul, ascribed it to them.
Which, how do you live with such hatred in your heart, Amanda?

Incidentally, the response from the Pandagonians so far amounts to this: Jesse called me a fucking idiot again, and a bunch of folks have pointed out how they find it “amusing” (read: aren’t sure how to respond) that the right points out how the left is composed of the real racists.
Or, to put it more simply: “AS IF!”
They are also citing the separate captions on the “looting” stories as proof of institutionalized racism (though what any of that has to do with “right wing” “racist fucks” I’m uncertain)—though to do so, they have to dismiss as disingenuous the two separate explanations made by the two separate stringers and suggest that such “racism” is “unconscious.”

I take offense that anyone would assume that a person such as I is racist just because I think theft is wrong, if it is not for survival. I count among my best friends people who are black, red, yellow, white, and multi-racial. Just because I grew up in small soutwestern towns doesn’t make me racist. It just limited the number of races I was in contact with. When I did come in contract with other races, I became friends with the ones that were likeable and not friends with those that were not.
I really burns my butt when I hear or read trash like that twit Andrea is spewing. When I first saw the effects of Katrina and the people struggling to survive, their color wasn’t even an issue. I thought of how awful it was that the ones left behind have the least capability to cope with this on their own. Poor people, no matter what color, deserve our compassion and help and there are thousands of people of every color mobililzed in the affected area and around the country busting their butts to provide for the survival of all hurricane victims.
Pray for them if you are so inclined, support them extravagantly with your gifts of money, and remember how truly blessed we are to live in a country where we don’t have to wait for international help to combat such a tragedy.
And to all the “Andrea’s” out there; go do something for somebody in need…it’ll eventuallyl change your attitude.

Not to throw more gas on this fire, but what the hell. Taranto had a nice chart on the racial makeup of the Parishes affected just in Lousianna in response to AlSharpton’s bloviating. One out of eight or nine of the parishes was predominantly black. All of the other parishes under evacuation order were mostly white. You certainly wouldn’t know it to watch TV, where this is being portrayed as a black-American tragedy. One parish in urban New Orleans. Who is playing rascist politics with this tragedy?
Actually, I’d been considering how it might be possible to help the plucky young Gibson. Something to shame any morons who might consider hassling him for his daring-do. Perhaps there’s an attorney in Houston who could make a discreet call into a well-placed ear, if necessary.

I know me. I know the kind of person I am, I do not need anyone else to endorse my opinion of myself or stamp bona fides on me. I believ in people, I want them all to succeed, regardless of color, culture or ethnicity. I don’t believe there has to be a winner and a loser. I think there can be two winners.

On that AP vs. AFP caption on looting, it was AFP that referred to the white people as looking for food. It’s possible, with them being French and all, that they would consider anyone doing desperation looting to be looking for food.
If we had a photo of AFP captioning a group of black people as looting while looking for food, then we might be able to refer to AFP as racist.
Likewise, if we had two AP captioned photographs that showed black people as looters and white people as looking for food, we could claim AP is racist.
Right now, the people getting bent out of shape over that are using it as a convenient method of reinforcing white guilt and most people aren’t inspecting the photographs adequately.

They did not enter a store illegally to get it, so I don’t think you could call it looting except under the most strict definition. Actually Matt Moore, the poor are not a race; they are, for the most part, a temporary ecomonic classification of people. I for several years moved back and forth across the poverty line due to job changes and major health reasons. When our daughter was born over a decade ago we actually received food stamps to buy milk for five months.
Now, thank God, I am paying more in taxes that I actually made in 1992. I still go to the same church, I still hang out with most of the same friends. The only difference I’ve really noticed is my hair is getting gray. I think changing my race would be quite a bit more of an ordeal.

The tragic fact is that America failed to live up to its promise once again. Our failure is made much worse by the fact that the most visible victims are poor and black. We don’t give a fuck about those who don’t do well in our system. We not only ignore them in our plans, but we let them rot for a week after the predictable consequences of our inaction occur.
The miserable Fidel Castro saved thousands of Cuban lives by moving them out of Hurricane Ivan’s path, but we left our citizen’s in harm’s way, and then let them rot for a week for good measure. I don’t like comparing unfavorably to Fidel. The Phillipines, Thailand, and Indonesia reacted to their natural disasters by instituting concrete plans for surviving the next disaster. Our Senate will debate the repeal Inheritance Tax on Tuesday. Thank God Paris Hilton’s fortune is safe.
We all fucked this up and, unless we do somehting besides reducing taxes, we are going to fuck up the next big earthquake or terrorist attack.

Look at Alabama. Look at Mississippi. There’s a difference in response that is telling. MEMA had its stuff together, as did Alabama emergency management. It’s not perfection, but the crisis is being met.

I turned off TV coverage of disasters on 9/12, as the repetitive scenes and soundbites can result in sensory overload, and either numbs you into depression, or enrages your emotions to a breaking point–unhelpful, and unhealthful responses, both.

Most of these people evacuated will not ever go back to New Orleans. They are already looking for jobs in Texas. Here on the local news in Dallas, all the people are grateful and happy to be getting help. Most interviewed are ready to rebuild, and want to get back on their feet. Stop watching the horrible cable news coverage. Today, while Fox showed all the airlifts and people being bussed out of New Orleans, CNN and MSNBC were interviewing the race baiters, and showing footage of some fire in NO. Nice of the m to ignore the people they have been covering endlessly, now that they are getting out of there.
Amanda also assumes everyone left to be taken out were all poor, they weren’t. Alot were in the middle class, and have lost everything they have, too.

Let me begin with this observation: American broadcast media is terrible (all of it–yeah, Fox included). I have turned off any mention of Katrina because it will be filled with the same kind of shallow, ill-informed, sensationalist nonsense that we see flowing from Iraq, or Afghanistan, or insert name of the day here. Remember folks, MSM could have been digging on hurricane readiness but chose to follow the story of a single missing teenager in Aruba (and I feel for the Holloway family, but we have too many other missing kids in America to become obsessed over one. And it was during the Holloway daze that the true stripes of the nannystatists showed: “These graduation trips to Aruba are too dangerous.” See my note above about ill-informed. Calling one of the safest locales on the planet dangerous is just, well…stupid.
So…fast forward. I have heard or inferred the following before shutting down: Looting televisions and diamond brooches is the moral equivalent of policemen breaking into pharmacies for medication. Emergency planning, foresight, and response is apparently only a federal responsibility. Getting relief into a city (or inhabitants out) of half a million should not be difficult especially when it is under water. When the President is in Crawford, Texas or any other location except the Oval Office, he has deserted his responsibilites and the communication structure to allow him to fulfill those responsibilities. Certain current and former members of Congress are experts on relief operations in Louisiana–just ask them, even if they have never set foot in the state. Treatment of some resembles the treatment of souls impressed aboard a slave ship.
Now–here is my question: Does the left believe that this kind of behavior, absolutely divorced from reality except for the tenuous tie to their hatred of the President, will lead them back to the reins of power? Anyone here remember the Labour Party in the UK under Neil Kinnock? He sounded REASONBALE compared to this childish hysteria.

Those of us who live down here in south Louisiana can draw a very easy distinction between someone “looting” for survival, and someone looting for profit. As a good place to start – go find out something about the politics of the levee boards. How they interact, how they make decisions, how they integrate. Well Jim, in a free society the government actually has respect for its citizens’ control of their persons, and thus prefers to persuade them to leave natural disasters rather than move them by force. And in a free society the citizens are so wealthy, and munificent, that they can donate vast amounts of time, sweat, and money to help those brown-skinned folk that they allegedly don’t give a fuck about.

Your quote is out of context. The DHS website is talking about it holding primary responsibility among the Federal government. It doesn’t replace state and local government. Constitutionally, it can’t.

These things matter—at least, they do to me. This is not about Amanda or Jesse being stupid fuckwits. This is about stupid fuckwits who shout loud enough cowing the rest of us into allowing them to control the discourse, from which follows control of the academy, and finally of social policy. Or haven’t you been paying attention to the aftermath of the Great Society and the me generation of social “science”?
I happen to find this particular debate one of the most seminal debate we can have in this country. By showing up one type of race demagogue for what she is—a passive racist—I’m doing something I believe to be important.

INteresting, isn’t it? The primary mode of discourse there at Pandagon seems to be to call you a fucking idiot, racist, asshole, etc – and then to ban you if you have the temerity to respond.
It must be a great tactic from their perspective, though – let you post once, slap you down with some snotty, hateful rejoinder that doesn’t address your points, and then ban you so you can’t point that out. I guess that’s one way to build up your self esteem.
Wadard – The people being criticized for screaming racism in this post are a Pandagonian, Jesse Jackson, and someone from the Huffington Post. At least the last one isn’t black, and none of them are, by any stretch of the imagination, “caught up” in the “badly managed crisis.” Jesse is safely behind a news conference podium, and the other two are comfortably in front of working computers.
I also seem to remember the last person to cause the JOOOOO outcry called Jeff a “Jew prick.” Somehow that seemed like obvious racism, since, well, he said something insulting about someone’s race. I didn’t hear anyone say “Black looters” or anything else overtly racist except for those trying to use the occasion to make political hay of supposed racism.
One of the fundamental problems with the left these days is that they are unwilling to fight the battles of today. Instead, they are sticking to what they “know” and fighting the battles that the citizens of this great land already won. They are laughable, and I hope they are soon gone, because the only way they can do what I described above is to lie about what is really happening.

Regarding the AFP “finding” vs “looters”, check out http://www.livejournal.com/community/blackfolk/2420240.html – they have the AFP picture of the white people with stuff they “found”, and an AFP picture of black people “looting”.
Of course, it’s possible that those pictures are a form of subtle anti-white racism, as the black guy in the AP picture is smart enough to put his loot into a plastic bag, while the white people aren’t.
But what do we care if the French are racist?
I’m white, female, Conservative, voted for Bush (2x) and if Mr. Gibson doesn’t get a pro-bono lawyer, I’ll gladly contribute to his defense. He not only has the last functional testicles, he also seems to have most of the last brain cells in the area.
