To all the Dads, Granddads, Greats, Uncles, and big brothers who step into the unique and critical role of Father …
Thank you.
You get a lot of lip-service from people who really just want you to shut-up and go away and let The State take care of business. Your only role, of course, is to create wealth to support them.
But every tear you dry, every backyard game of catch and teaching to ride a two-wheeler bike, to rough-housing before bed to leading Grace at the dinner table … you are essential to making a family a family.
Bravo.
Now here’s a small clip I extracted from the years of family movies my maternal grandpa took on his trusty Bell & Howell 8mm Magic Eye movie camera. My parents converted them to VHS in 1994 (where they acquired the funky music), my sister copied them to DVD in 2010. I grabbed two minutes from 1961 here, maternal grandparents, parents, me (brunette kid with missing teeth hamming it up) and my younger sister.
Oh the heteronormality!!

Darleen, are those Princess Leia braids on the side as you lavish the world with kisses?
Yep … she also used to put my braids on top of my head like a crown too.
Yesterday the local Publix had a 50%-off sale on ribeye steak.
I bought $50 worth. I cooked it today (olive oil/salt/peppercorn rub, five minutes roast at 400 F, three-minute grill sear on each side) and provided all around a meal with potato(e)s, salad, and a large amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, while overlooking what my years of striving have gained for me.
As an idiot who escaped his village in the west of Ireland, I feel pretty good, today.
Happy Dad’s Day, y’all!
We took eight year old nephew out for his first game of nine holes with his dad, four uncles and two pop-pops (throw in a great uncle and cousin for good measure).
Finished up watching the Open with some food and beers at one pop-pop’s house with the other two nephews who were a bit too young to play just yet.
It was a good day.
Strangely brutal. But a dad thing, absolutely!
Welcome back cynn!
Lisa, (formerly known as Liberal Lisa) stopped by a few months back and told us about her conserva-conversion. Seems living overseas had opened her eyes and the things she had been reading here all made so much more sense.
I was wondering if living in the age of Obama has had a similar effect on you?
As a gay conservative/libertarian (and let’s be sure to throw BELIEVING CATHOLIC into the mix), bravo. In the phrase “heteronormality” normality is the key word. And I’m smart enough, and not narcisstice enough, to believe that heterosexuality IS the norm. I celebrate heterosexuals, and while not *ashamed* that I’m gay, I recognize that homosexuality is NOT the norm. And I’m just fine with that.
I was presented with a power tool and told to go use it to make the garage more acceptable.
I hate it when that happens.
They are going to kick you out of the club for being too well-adjusted, Bastiat_Fan.
” I recognize that homosexuality is NOT the norm.”
