BREAKING:  Orioles’ first baseman Rafael Palmeiro suspended 10 days for steroid-related offense

Palmeiro, who collected his 3000th hit earlier this season and is 33 homeruns shy of 600 for his career, testified before a Congressional panel on steroid abuse in March.

update:  Rafael Palmeiro had nothing to gain from purposely taking steroids.  Professional athletes are ministered too constantly by doctors and trainers, they take numerous over-the-counter supplements, and steroids, properly admininstered, have medical value and can come in many forms, including topical ointments.  So unlike the analysts I’ve seen rushing to get their mugs on the tube today to condemn Palmeiro before all the facts come to light (one of them, for instance, was suddenly very suspicious about how Palmeiro went from being a .300-avg. slap hitter to a man on the verge of 600 homeruns, forgetting, evidently, that Palmeiro added an uppercut to his swing, began concentrating on pulling the inside pitch, and purposely sacrificed points on his batting average to become the kind of run producer teams expect from corner infielders), I’m going to defer judgment—and in the meantime give Palmeiro the benefit of the doubt.

Sheesh.  What a damn shame.  I guess now we’ve got our test case to see what they do as far as records go when a clear HOFer is ‘roided up.

  2. Jeff Goldstein says:

Well, Palmeiro is saying he has no idea how the steroids got into his system—and I find it curious that he would use steroids this, of all years—so I’m going to wait and see if this is a Sheffield-like situation before I pass judgment on Palmeiro.

Palmeiro never looked “bulked up” to me, and there are legitimate uses for steroids.

  3. SeanH says:

I hope it is something like that and not a liar, liar pants on fire kind of case.  I agree that he’s not one of the Giambi types that really have you wondering about steroids.

  4. CITIZEN JOURNALIST says:

Wow, can anything else go wrong for the O’s?  This last week plus has been an absolute nightmare for them.  First Ponson, then Cabrera, now this?

It can’t be a coincidence.  There must be something– wait…

IS KARL ROVE OUT TO GET THE ORIOLES?!?

  5. Mark says:

Yes, a ROVIAN PLOT to take away focus on John Bolton’s nastiness and John Robert’s contempt for civil rights laws.

    Or something like that.

  6. harrison says:

Hopefully, Pete Angelos will in up in prison over this.

    (GO NATS!)

  7. harrison says:

    end, maybe.

  8. Splendid Splinter says:

Apparently, there will be no “sheffield-like” investigation.  The players union says it will not hear Palmeiro’s grievance.  If it were anything like the Sheffield situation, the Union would fight.

I believed Palmeiro when he said, under oath, that he “never took steroids.  Period.  End of story.”

Now, to me, he is simply another version of Bill Clinton.

It all depends on your definition of “took”, Rafael.

  9. Scott says:

If you believe that Palmeiro had never used steroids in the past, does that mean Viagra is a “gateway drug” that inevitably lead users to stronger performance enhancers?

Turing word: “like”- as in “Viagra… just like marijuana!”

  10. CraigC says:

Oh, man.  After years of being overlooked, and people saying he’d never make the Hall, he finally became a lock, and now this.  If he did it, it’s his own fault, but still…
