  1. Spiny Norman says:

For the people who see the gubmint as “Uncle Sugar”, the question of whether FDR’s policies prolonged the Great Depression is completely irrelevant. They “helped people right now”, so the theory goes. That’s all that matters.

  2. Ernst Schreiber says:

Pawn Brokers and payday/title loan operations help people right now too.

For that matter, loan sharks specialize in helping people who noboday else can help “right now.”

One doesn’t even need to watch the video, but just take into account what Obama has done to get the same results.

Researchers reporting at the American Chemical Society conference revealed details of a cascade of micro-organisms that spring into action to degrade oil.

Research has also outlined how chemical “dispersants” used in clean-up efforts actually frustrate these processes.

. . . not to imply here that the spill had no lasting ill effects.

It was of more consequence to FDR to introduce his “four freedoms” of positive right, along with his programmatic dismantlement of the Constitution of the United States than to dwell on the paltry economic well-being of a single generation. He could affect many generations to come, you see. And so he has, all to their detriment. What a man.

Why, there is a national memorial to him, situated right there on the muddy Potomac River between the monument to Lincoln and the Monument to Jefferson! Again, are we proud?

  7. TeeJaw says:

FDR most surely did turn a recession into a depression and then prolonged it. But the American public didn’t blame him for that. The public saw FDR are trying to fix the economy while he was destroying it. That exact same phenomenon is at work today for Obama. He is destroying the country and the low information voters think someone else is doing it and that Obama is trying to stop them.

WW II did end the Great Depression, but not the way most people think. It didn’t end the depression by massive government spending. Rather, WW II ended the New Deal, and that allowed the Depression to end.

The Democrats wanted to reinstitute the New Deal after the war, and if they had got their way the Depression would have returned. But by then the Republicans finally got some balls and stopped them. The result was a post-war booming economy.

For anyone who finds this interesting, Robert Higgs is the go-to guy.

I think too much of the New Deal still remained, but the fact that the US was the only functioning industrial nation left after the war allowed us to boom in spite of that.

    For a time.

I’ve seen this discussion before. What I’d really like to see is a debate on this issue between Ohanian and de Long, if only to see how and how soon de Long calls for the immediate impeachment of George W. Bush.
