SHOCKER: Cuomo bravado over NY’s historic gun control turns to blame shifting as law proves awful

NYP:

A Cuomo administration source is flatly denying the governor’s claim that his new anti-gun SAFE Act was carefully drafted, saying the governor himself wasn’t even aware of some provisions when it was hastily enacted into law.

“The governor thought the limit on the size of [gun] magazines would only apply to assault-style rifles, not to handguns,’’ said the source.

“That’s why there’s the big problem now with handguns, among other things in the statute.’’

The legal sale of virtually all semiautomatic handguns will soon be impossible because Cuomo’s law limits the size of bullet-holding magazines to seven shots, virtually none of which are manufactured for sale.

“Much of what’s in the law was drafted by people connected to Mayor Bloomberg and the Brady Center, not by the governor’s staff,” the source said. “That’s why there are so many problems with it.’’

So. When Governor Cuomo was beating his chest over his ability to take away 2nd Amendment rights from “paranoid conspiracy theorists” who’d somehow adopted the crazy idea that the Amendment he was bent on molesting was installed by the Framers and those who ratified the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to protect the people against government tyranny (not unlike the abridgment of their natural rights by a Governor acting extralegally, using “crisis” as an excuse, ironically enough!), he demanded his “bravery” be hailed.

Now that the whole law is turning out to be an unenforcible, unpopular, unconstitutional piece of shit, however, his staff is leaking that the Governor had very little to do with drafting it, but instead was just the ignorant hammer that drove it through into law — not knowing what all was in it.

That is to say, he’s a victim of Bloomberg and the Brady Center’s having not done their due diligence when presenting him with a law to push through without first understanding it.  Which I’m pretty sure makes him anti-Semitic.

Lord, how I love when they turn on their own.

But I love it more when the voters wake up and turn on them.  I hope Governor Hickenlooper and all the Democratic lawmakers here in Colorado who were bought and paid for by Bloomberg, the Brady Center, and the White House are paying attention.

And I suspect when Senators Paul, Lee, and Cruz go to the floor to filibuster anti-gun legislation that Republicans like John McCain will support, the American people will once again largely rally behind them — and remind the President and the rest of our ruling class establishment that a cynical and opportunistic violation of the rights of law-abiding citizens does more to dishonor “victims of gun violence” than does standing up to those looking to run roughshod over your natural rights, using dead children as a shield.

I don’t think Paul and Cruz can be shamed by that “dishonoring the gun victims” crap.

How about the fact that these gun laws are unconstitutional and disrespect every citizen? Does that matter?

    I does to me.

  2. Blake says:

The SAFE act wasn’t that hard to read, nor that long.

Yet, Cuomo is using the Pelosi excuse, “We have to pass the bill in order to find out what’s in it.”

  3. daveinsocal says:

I wanna see Cuomo’s license and tax stamp authorizing him to wield that military-grade blamethrower.

  4. leigh says:

Heh. That was epic Dave. I’m stealing it.

  5. Ernst Schreiber says:

If I was a New York Republican, I’d spend from now until Cuomo stands for reelection reminding everyone that the Governor of New York let’s the Mayor of New York City do his job for him.

  6. Ernst Schreiber says:

With Hickenlooper like this, somebody’s going to end up with a plastic bag where their Cuomo used to be.

  7. Jim in KC says:

These idiots pay about as much attention to how they write firearms laws as they do to firearms safety when making their little commercials. To the surprise of pretty much no one.

(Bill Cosby voice of Noah) “Riiiiiiggghhhtttt”.

Methinks the Governor is being more than a little disingenuous here.

Heartfelt advice for “liberals” and would be ‘transformational figures’:

” Leave people alone, quit trying to fit everyone into your pea sized little world. You cannot chastise everyone for things you don’t like and expect people to respect you and your beliefs when …and try to get others in trouble. ”

Taken from a comment in a blog about the lady who heard two men behind her making a rude pun at a tech conference and took a picture of them and tweeted it instead of asking them to cool it. One of the men got fired, and so did the lady, because whatever the intentions, noble or petty, nobody likes a hot mess in public from supposed adults in a professional environment.

If you choose to live by the sword you may not die by the sword but you can expect your fingers to total up to less than 10 at some point. In the east they call it karma. In the west they call it backlash. People get fucking sick of being kicked eventually.

When I heard about the 7-round magazine limit my first thought was that in their ignorance they were promoting use of the Colt 1911 and its clones, since the 1911 was designed to use a 7-round mag. “No more of those puny 9 millies for youse, get a real gun in .45acp!”

My first thought was my 357 magnum is still legal but my 22 target pistol isn’t.

So, would I be right in concluding that the Governor had to sign it to find out what was in it ???

Lee, I saw an article on cheap Halloween costumes awhile back and one of them was a huge cleaver that appears to be stuck in the head. Fake blood sold separately.

bh had the right idea with learning to sneak around a darkened house with a bow and arrow, Injun style.

‘Liberals’ consider their supposedly good intentions to be good and helpful in and of themselves independent of whatever results even if it is harmless. The goodness of their wishes supposedly propels them above common people even when those wishes lead to terrible policy failures. Yet they sneer at prayers as a waste of time and energy because there is no one to hear them.

    Weird folks.

Maybe it’d be a good idea to not sign legislation right after one of your girlfriend’s “dinners”. You know, the ones that consist of Ritz crackers, squeeze cheeze, and several pitchers of drinks?

You just know that Sandra learned her hostessing skills at her sorority. Yes, *that* sorority.

Their good intentions and the requisite evil intentions of their enemies. My liberal friends are all lined up on the same side of this argument

    OMG BECAUSE GROVER NORDQUITST!!!!!!!!!

They can’t even conceive of how letting the IRS do tax returns for people too stupid to figure out an EZ form is probably maybe not so hot an idea.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    They are. Meet your betters.

WH now getting the vapors over the proposed filibustering by Cruz et al. Lots of waving hankies and cries of “get the smelling salts!”

    Boo yah!

  26. geoffb says:

    This from a Governor:

In his veto letter, Beebe said he “believes that the bill will unnecessarily cost taxpayers money, grow bureaucracy … ”

“I cannot approve such an unnecessary measure that would negatively impact one of our most precious rights as citizens,” Beebe added.

Is it about vetoing a gun control law?

    Nope.

  27. leigh says:

Governor Beebe is a moron. This isn’t a newsflash, just FYI.

Honestly, I don’t understand Arkansas. Next door to Texas and Oklahoma, snuggled up to Tennessee and the Ozarks and they vote like it’s Los Angeles.

It’s no wonder all of us’ns down here make fun of them and don’t claim any relatives from there.

  28. Arkansawyers are afraid if they’re subjected to background checks before voting only people whose family trees fork will be allowed to vote. Or only those with fewer than 11 toes.

  29. RI Red says:

Leigh, I have this bad feeling that Arkansas and Colorado are not outliers. I think the infiltration of the red states by blue staters is in full swing. Not necessarily as a plan of action, but by happenstance. NH is a good example. Massholes come north to take advantage of taxes and bring their statist views with them. Then demand that taxes go up to pay for state-y things.

Look at Texas, for goodness sakes. Check out the voting results from this last cycle.
Just like “Walking Dead.” We’re all infected.

  30. Ernst Schreiber says:

An infection that’s easily cured, at the state level at least, by three, five or ten year residency requirements before allowing relocators to vote in state elections.

  31. leigh says:

Red, you’re right about blue staters moving in and trying to change things. Thankfully, no one want to move here (yet) so the only douchebags we have to deal with are college professors.

As for Texas, I blame Austin for allowing Michael Dell to set up shop there.

  32. leigh says:

Flash: Arkansas’s congresscritters/state senators voted to overturn Gov. Beebe’s veto on the voter ID issue.

    Take that, Beebe.
