College Football Open Thread [McGehee]

If anyone would like to take a brief pause from talking politics (I can’t imagine why) it is once again Saturday.

Naturally the McGehee household is interested mainly in the game tonight wherein Mississippi State invades Tuscaloosa and loosens some tusks (#HailSt8 #WeBelieve), but of course I’m given to understand there are some other games today.

It’s not on TV in the Atlanta media market, that I’ve been able to find*, but Texas Tech — which humiliated B Moe’s WVU a couple of weeks ago and bounded onto the rankings — goes to K-State home turf to see if they can humiliate another high-ranked school. I may be able to watch it online at ESPN3.com. Any K-State fans here should make their bets with Mike LaRoche.

Then there’s Oklahoma and Notre Dame, I think OU is at home for that one — if I’m wrong I believe leigh can correct the record.

Anybody else with games they’re interested in should check in below.

*Update: I was wrong about the Texas Tech game, it’s on my local Fox station right now. But I missed the first half, @#$!!

As I don’t have a dog in any college football hunt, I tend to turn on the games featuring the highest-ranked teams, or those games that look pretty close.

  2. leigh says:

Correct. OU is at home this weekend. The place is packed with tailgaters.

    Prepare to be slaughtered, Irish.

  3. sdferr says:

Yipes! It’s a mite windy in Jacksonville today.

  4. sdferr says:

Gotta like the look of Ga’s 1st half running game today, their passing game not so much.

  5. dicentra says:

I have this thing where I like to turn on a game (any game) and doze off on the couch with it on.

Unless both teams are wearing red, then I have to find another game.

Blamed if I know why that is. Maybe because I graduated from BYU (blue) whose chief rival was UofU (red).

More likely it’s because I prefer that the two teams have contrasting colors. That UCLA vs. UofU was just about perfect, what with blue, yellow, red, and white being represented. It looked very nice.

I also appreciate Tennessee citric orange and North Carolina baby blue (unusual), plus Oregon’s lovely dark green with yellow. (Though they should have named their team “Mallards” or “Mergansers” or “Cormorants,” retaining the imagery of the local waterfowl but avoiding the absurdity of the name.)

And, as always, I cannot endure that bland, narrow N on the Nebraska helmet. The font is all wrong for the negative space that surrounds it. And they just got new helmets with the same sickly N.

People, some traditions really do not deserved to be honored. Like the Wretchard case, a bad decision made in the past should not be perpetuated throughout the generations.

You may now proceed to remember that Cheers episode wherein Diane bet on football teams by criteria such as team colors and which city had the better ballet company.

    And won every week.

They beat my Cougs a couple weeks back in a heartbreaker. GoooooOU.

  7. leigh says:

OU’s colors are crimson and cream. I’ll let you know what happens. ; )

  8. sdferr says:

Looks like Oregon finally put the third string in. Colorado sighs in relief.

  9. Darleen says:

    woohoo halftime just started

    USC 21 AZ 13

  10. serr8d says:

Should’ve been 21-16, Darleen, but the refs blew a call and took 3 off the scoreboard. Ratfinks.

  11. LBascom says:

After a dismal start, 0-21 Nevada Wolf pack early in the second quarter, my Fresno State Bulldogs, soon WAC champions, made it 14-24 at the half, and now in the forth enjoy a commanding 42-24 lead.

Darleen, early next season we come for USC. Be afraid, be very afraid(unless we have the same refs as last time we met).

  12. BigBangHunter says:

    – You didn’t miss much McGehee. So far its been one of thoes games where everybody in the stadium, including the refs and the hotdog venders, seem to be somewhere else, or wish they were. They’ve even had a sideline interference penalty.

    – You know, one of those games.

  13. McGehee says:

BBH, I just got back in front of the TV in time for the 4th quarter. Tech looks downright snakebit.

Oh well, K-State is riding high and maybe I’ll get to root for them against Bama in the BCS Championhip game.

    Whenever the hell that is.

  14. McGehee says:

…unless, of course, MSU humiliates Bama so badly tonight they go into a slump for the rest of the season…

  15. Mike LaRoche says:

*Update: I was wrong about the Texas Tech game, it’s on my local Fox station right now. But I missed the first half, @#$!!

What an embarrassment. But it’s typical Tech; they just can’t win the big game.

  16. sdferr says:

    Uh-oh.

  17. sdferr says:

And dead. That’s no way to carry a football Mr. Reed.

  18. serr8d says:

Oh how they have rallied! AZ 39, USC 28. Lane Kiffin, glad to see your Wiki page is correct!

Lane Monte Kiffin (born May 9, 1975) is the incompetenthead coach of the University of Southern California Trojans college football team. He does not have sufficient experience to be coaching at the University of Southern California but was hired for some reason anyway. [2] He previously served as offensive coordinator for the USC Trojans from 2005-2006, head coach of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders from 2007-2008, and head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009. Kiffin was the youngest head coach in NFL history when he was with the Raiders, and is currently the youngest head coach of a BCS Conference team in college football.[3][4] He is the son of longtime NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who is the assistant head coach for USC.[5]

  19. serr8d says:

Heh. Arizona beats USC 39-36. I’d hate to be Kiffin’s Wiki page later on today…

  20. BigBangHunter says:

    – I couldn’t even follow the Buskeye game on any of the online radio stations, nada. Those bastards at ESPN really know how to control the broadcasting game.

  21. Darleen says:

    serr8d

[sticks out tongue, blows raspberries] Hurrrumph …

  22. BigBangHunter says:

Tweeeeeeeet…..Whistles Darleen for illegal use of cuteness…..half the distance to the ‘goal line’ – still 1st down.

  23. Mike LaRoche says:

Any K-State fans here should make their bets with Mike LaRoche.

And it’s a good thing I’m not a betting man. I’d have lost my ass this afternoon. Hope the Red Raiders have better luck against UT next week.

  24. LBascom says:

49-32. Go Fresno, win the WAC!

  25. McGehee says:

It isn’t that I might not have taken any bets, it’s that with what I have riding on the MSU-Alabama game I may need to keep that barrel and those Kleenex boxes.

  26. McGehee says:

Gah! I hate to see the other team score first. Still, we knew this one was going to draw blood.

…and that was a nice return, if you overlook the near turnover.

  27. dicentra says:

OU’s colors are crimson and cream. I’ll let you know what happens. ; )

Yeah, but ND (North Dakota, obviously) is navy and gold, so they can be on the field together without making me crazy.

  28. Squid says:

A wicked combination of ineptitude on offense (3 and out! 4 and out! Interception!) and really poor (and curiously one-sided) officiating meant Penn State’s defense was on the field for the entire friggin’ game. I wanted to explain to the commentators that the Suckeyes’ offensive line wasn’t really that impressive; by the fourth quarter, the Plum Township Marching Band could have opened lanes against our exhausted Lions.

Ah, well. It ain’t like we had Bowl hopes anyways.

  29. leigh says:

TD! Yes! This game was not supposed to be a nail-biter.

  30. dicentra says:

    Leigh!

ND isn’t supposed to be wining this. Make it stop!

  31. leigh says:

I’m trying, di. Apparently swearing at the teevee and insulting the QB’s mother isn’t doing the trick.

  32. Mike LaRoche says:

Well, it looks like the remainder of the Big 12 season will be a fight between Texas Tech and Oklahoma to determine who goes to the Cotton Bowl and who goes to the Alamo Bowl.

  33. leigh says:

Mike, our teams suck. This is bogus.

  34. Mike LaRoche says:

Yep, we need to find a way to blame Diebold and/or Dick Cheney.

  35. sdferr says:

It sure ain’t lookin’ good for the MoTown boys.

  36. McGehee says:

I guess we’ll be able to keep the #HailSt8 hashtag at least another week. Though #LookingFor9 will take on added urgency.
