Overheard inside a Tikrit bunker, Wednesday, March 23

First militant:  “Do you remember those early days, Umar?—when our cause burned so brightly that our souls were all but branded by its righteous fire?”

Second militant:  “I remember, Shakil.  And I have not lost faith.  In fact, my soul today burns hotter than ever—forging my steely resolve in the flames of unwavering conviction.”

First militant:  “Uh huh.”

Second militant:  “What?  Why do you look at me that way?”

First militant:  “Well, I hate to be the one to tell you this, Umar—but that righteous burning you’re feeling in your soul?  It might have something to do with the footlong piece of shrapnel you have protruding from your back and chest…”*

  1. Salt Lick says:

“Iraqi commandos… killed 84 militants…one of the highest guerrilla death tolls in the country’s nearly two-year-old insurgency.”

US Training-Sergeant Buck Turgenson: “Now guys, say after me, very slowly—‘Pri-son-er. Dooon’t shooooot pri-son-er.’”

  2. The fighting came as politicians in Baghdad pushed on with talks to decide the make-up of a government more than seven weeks after the election, amid growing frustration among Iraqis.

Many say they risked their lives to vote, defying insurgents waging a campaign of violence.

What kind of bullshit is this?

It’s mentioned again at the end, again without any sourcing whatever.

Most differences appear to have been worked out, after more than six weeks of negotiations and in the face of grumbling among Iraqis fearful that the country’s first elected post- Saddam Hussein government could be sunk by infighting.

Fantasy and innuendo must come easier than actual reporting when you’re “reporting” from the roof of Hotel Baghdad with a bag of crisps and a telescope.

It couldn’t just be a story about new commandos and firey justice, now could it.

  3. Jeff Goldstein says:

    Well, it is Reuters reporting.

  4. Scott P says:

    Footlong shrapne…. Dusty Girl…. steely resol… Say Anything girl….. unwavering conv….

Ah, f@#k it.  What’s the use?

  5. WindRider95 says:

Wow…the “She Wants You” girl makes the Dusty girl just flat out disappear.  Mmmmmm good.  I feel confident the Alpha Baboon would rate her “5 Bananas!”

    Alpha?

  6. WindRider95 says:

Jeff:  your “Overheard outside a bunker” series is classic…funniest stuff I’ve read in ages!  Thanks for the great humor…

  7. Scott P says:

I don’t know WindRider, the Say Anything girl must have seen too many Heather Thomas posters growing up.  Or maybe that was just me…

My vote’s for the latest Dusty Girl, FWIW.

  8. Sean M. says:

Damn, Scott…Heather’s got some serious camel-toe action going on there!

  9. CoralHead says:

“No Diving” indeed.  Is she even legal?

    Word: “Hot” No kidding!

  10. Scott P says:

I think if you click on them a lot really fast, they get off.  Or maybe it’s Jeff that gets off.

Whatever, as long as someone’s getting off around here…

  11. Jim in Texas says:

It almost sounds like a song tht ABBA would “Do hear the guns Fernando?”

  12. WindRider95 says:

    Scott, Scott, Scott,

You can have this Dusty girl…Say Anything girl is sooooooo much hotter.

But then, beauty is only a light switch away.

  13. Scott P says:

    You betcha.

  14. CraigC says:

“But then, beauty is only a light switch away.”

By turning it on, or turning it off?

  15. Alpha Baboon says:

Windrider.. I dont know if she rates ‘5 Bananas’ but I would certainly give her the coveted

‘ 8” Cut Porn Banana of Lies ‘ rating..

  16. kyle says:

Try this link for a less-poisoned view of the same story.  MSNBC’s wire service actually reports it without the twist of Anti-American lime.

The article also makes mention of the news that a Sunni Arab will likely be tapped as Iraqi Secretary of Defense in an effort to create a more inclusive cabinet.

But I’m sure Rove & co. will find a way, despite that, to install a Shiite theocracy.  Reuters will keep us informed, no doubt.

  17. kyle says:

In re-reading my post I wanted to make it uber-clear that it was REUTERS’ reporting that was poisoned, not Jeff G’s commenting thereon.

  18. John says:

    Ummmm Heather Thomas???  Try Locklear.

  19. Carin says:

For a female opinion, I’d have to go with the “Say Anything” girl. Usually, brunettes get bonus points in my book … but this time, I gotta go with the blond.

  20. WindRider95 says:

“…without the twist of Anti-American lime.”

Anti-American lime?  What about Mexican tequila?  Can I use it with that?  And not a twist either…a nice thick wedge…and top the ‘rita off with a shot of Grand Marnier.  Ahhhhh…now that’s top shelf!

  21. Scott P says:

    John-

Nope, that’s Heather Thomas.  Heather Locklear certainly works for me too, but the classic Heather Thomas pink bikini pic is what came to mind…

  22. Salt Lick says:

“For a female opinion, I’d have to go with the “Say Anything” girl. Usually, brunettes get bonus points in my book … but this time, I gotta go with the blond.”

Carin, I think it’s because the blonde looks like she’s saying “Wanna see how fast this bottom can come off?” and the brunette is saying, “Very funny putting the super glue on my butt, Chad. Now get me a towel.”

  23. Carl in N.H. says:

The smouldering Dusty brunette, no contest.  With the caveat that I want to see an ID, of course.

The Say Anything blonde looks like she has the chirpy perkiness that wears thin pretty quickly on a hungover Sunday morning.

Perhaps we can all agree that it is a blessing that Jeff doesn’t have the same Creepy Floor Humper Inmate ad that Roger Simon does…

  24. John says:

    Scott P.

Noted, and I apologize for my blunder.

  25. Scott P says:

    John-

Apparently they’ve been confused a lot over the years.  I just happened to be a teenager while she was ‘the latest thing’.

Not that I was obsessed with the poster.  At all.  Really.
