Gun porn!

I’m under the weather — have some sort of stomach bug — but that won’t stop me from sharing my (nearly completed) SHTF / EOTHWAYKI Zombie killer.

It’s a FN SCAR-17S in 7.62×51 / .308 with a 1-6×24 FFP illuminated CRS (combat rifle scope) from GRSC, with a great reticle designed by former SF Ed Verdugo. I’ve replaced the stock A2 grip with a Hogue (w/ storage) and added a Mako QD fore grip that pops open into a swiveling and canting bipod (pictured). The sight is mounted w/ a Bobro extended QD mount. I also added a Front swiveling mount from Gear Sector for a padded VTAC sling; rear sling point uses a simple HK clip. Rails are covered using Ergo ladder rail covers. I’ll probably drop the Mako back toward the trigger assembly and add a Magpul angled fore grip at some point to the far end of the 6 o’clock rail.

But for now I just want to shoot shit.

can i just ask ? What sort of zombie hordes are you expecting – hundreds or thousands? And can you just pick that thing up a run with it?

  2. geoffb says:

    Nice.

  3. Jeff G. says:

I’m expecting the unexpected. But yeah, I can pick this up and run with it. It’s 8lbs empty, maybe 12lbs with the scope and a full mag, etc. The sling allows me to carry it at ready or sling it over my back.

  4. Russ says:

    Want. Want so hard.

Good thing my cupboard is the opposite of bare, or I’d feel compelled to get myself one of those babies.

  5. Jeff G. says:

My cupboard was bare. Now it’s so empty that other empty things it talks to come away pitying it.

  6. Robb Allen says:

    SQUEEEEE!

That’s a nice rig, my friend. I was thinking about trying to talk you out of it, but then I realized it was jealousy talking and not much else.

  7. geoffb says:

Better get your ammo before it is all purchased by DHS-NOAA-SSA Zombie Brigades.

  8. BigBangHunter says:

….or sling it over my back.

    – They say that Joan Rivers has been able to do that for years – both of them.

  9. leigh says:

Looks like an expensive rig. Sturdy too.

    Congratulations

  10. Wm T Sherman says:

Now comes the expense of feeding it.

  11. jcw46 says:

    I. Am. Envious.

I have to go pout now.

  12. Abe Froman says:

I hope you’ll just maim the zombies with that thing so the boulder tossing and catch wrestling don’t completely go to waste.

  13. djharr says:

Well, you finally got me to register and comment, Jeff. Nice work… Nice looking gun. You have inspired me to go get something similar for myself. I am going with the old tried and true, though, I think. I already have an M1A national match that is an XM21 sniper system clone (just like I used to use in the good old days back in the 82d ABN…). I think I am going to get another M14 based rifle as more of a “battle rifle” setup. But I am going to put this one together from best of breed parts. So I am going to go to one company for the receiver, another for the barrel, yet another for the stock. There are a number of people who make really amazing stuff for these weapons. I will definitely take a look at what you have done with the optics. The M1A is my go-to gun for 300m+ stuff, so I want something for closer in. I have to say, though, curse you for getting me back onto the gun treadmill. Now I am spending all kinds of money on firearms. Of course, I think I will be focusing on reloading supplies for .40 S&W and .45 ACP between now and November. In any case sweet rig. Now, I am going to go put several hundred rounds through my Glocks, just to prepare for the post-election rioting.

  14. I think a lot of progressives just got the vapors.

  15. I want to see some results — still or video.

  16. dicentra says:

Better get your ammo before it is all purchased by DHS-NOAA-SSA Zombie Brigades.

    Which, wtf, amirite?

    still or video

If he’s shooting up stuff, how could anything but video suffice?

I’ve heard that old computers and monitors make satisfying targets. And old jars of fruit from a Mormon fruit cellar.

    Just sayin’.

  17. Abe Froman says:

We used to shoot water balloons. Maybe not the most satisfying object imaginable, but a lot of bang for the buck.

  18. cranky-d says:

That is sweet. I want one.

  19. djharr says:

Just to provide a counterpoint to Jeff’s fine, fine rifle, I want to point you all to a couple of lovely pieces of art, both based around the forged M14 receivers made by LRB. Again, this is in no way meant to denigrate the beautiful weapon Jeff has gotten for himself, rather it is to celebrate diversity. And I believe that this is a form of diversity we can ALL get behind.

Nice. Can’t wait for the group photos!

  21. BigBangHunter says:

“…..Hmmmm, lets see, FRC or TVC, FRC or TVC….oh the hell with it, I’ll just flip a coin.”

  22. McGehee says:

All it needs is the right soundtrack. Lots of boom-chicka-WOW-WOW.

  23. BigBangHunter says:

“….So, based on what we know so far, I figure the FRC shooter had plans to take over the center with hostages (25 Chika-fil-A sandwitches in his backpack) and forcefeed them his version of H8ter food, but when the guard confronted him he closed his eyes and bravely shot at anything in front of him, and when he saw he’d actually shot someone his one ball fell off and rolled under the recetionists desk.”

    – The comments section is typical of the aimless thinking of the Left these days. They’re badly confused and dishearted. The narrative seems to have wandered off a cliff, and defending Jug ears is too much like ‘work’.

  24. Swen says:

That’s got to come close to being the most fun you can have with your pants on!

  25. Swen says:

BTW, when do all of us who contributed get to shoot it?

  26. Diana says:

I’m just curious … does it come with a conceal/carry permit?

  27. BigBangHunter says:

    ….conceal/carry permit?

    – Is thatan FN SCAR-17s in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

  28. serr8d says:

Nice rig. Best practical choice in caliber; you’ll not regret that whilst contemplating targets downrange.

  29. Darleen says:

I’m just going to sit over here, quietly, in awe.

I know next to nothing about the “inside-baseball” stuff about guns and have no clue where to start.

  30. Donald says:

Having just spent the sayin Santa Monica and West LA, I gotta tell say, you scared the hell out of me.

    Just sayin.

  31. Blake says:

    Nice rig, Jeff.

You’ll have fun working with the gun and getting it to shoot like you want. What’s fascinating about shooting, at least to me, is your rifle can be set up and shoot perfectly for you but not shoot worth a damn for someone else.

As for shooting shit, I suggest the old standby, a bag of flaming dog poo at 200 yards.

  32. Dale Price says:

    Damn.

OK–I want one, or something very like one.

    Bravo!

Read the comments to that NYT link. Fifth grade level of understanding is probably reaching.

  38. BigBangHunter says:

“….Sometimes I get the nagging feeling that Obama and the Left hate Isreal, but that’s probably just my evil racist conservative extremist inner self talking.”

  39. newrouter says:

This idea that government was beholden to the people, that it had no other source of power except the sovereign people, is still the newest, most unique idea in all the long history of man’s relation to man. For almost two centuries we have proved man’s capacity for self-government, but today we are told we must choose between a left and right or, as others suggest, a third alternative, a kind of safe middle ground. I suggest to you there is no left or right, only an up or down. Up to the maximum of individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism; and regardless of their humanitarian purpose those who would sacrifice freedom for security have, whether they know it or not, chosen this downward path.

  40. BigBangHunter says:

    – B Moe, glancing through the comments, at least two things jumped out at me.

    – The Left has fully developed a 100% effective “clock of invisibility” for Obama’s 4 years of carrying out the Bush/Cheny Iraq-Afghan doctrine to the letter. They seem incapable of saying the words out loud. Apparently they still think Bush is the president.

    – In a number of the comments they betray quite clearly they believe Jug ears is going to get his half white ass kicked in November. Phrases like:

“We have no reason to believe that Romney will act any different, so nothing will change after the election”

  41. B Moe says:

  42. newrouter says:

i need ryan in w. pa to rebut jfk:

Every generation faces different problems and every generation must come up with new solutions. The question which I ask you, not as a partisan matter, but just as a question of what kind of a country you want, and what kind of actions you wish this country to take, and what you see as the responsibility of your National Government, which party, based not on what speeches I may make or other candidates may make of both parties, during a period of 4 or 5 weeks before election, but which party, day in and day out, year in and year out, for the past 30 years has stood for those things that make it possible for this country to be prosperous. I believe that the Democratic Party does, and I believe the Republican Party–that’s what we have to decide.

Can you tell me one single piece of progressive legislation of benefit to the people of this country that the Republican Party has sponsored in 30 years? Because if you can’t, I can tell you a hundred pieces of legislation that they’ve opposed–from the beginning of the right of labor to organize, and social security and minimum wage, and housing legislation, and all the rest that make it possible for us to produce a better life for our people.

  44. BigBangHunter says:

    – O’jug ears today: “They have been trying to sell this snake oil trickle down theory for years”, he said to a sparse gathering in NH. Does the Left actually buy this crap, or is it just the fear that their gravy train is about to get cut off?

    – By contrast Ryan spoke to another overflow crowd in Florida’s largest retirement community today, absolutely demolishing bummblefucks healthcare and Medicare claims. They are having a difficult timr accomidating all the people that want to attend these Republican rally’s. The campaign is estimating they’ll raise another 7 million+ from this stop in just 24 hours.

    – We should all bask in the Lefts pain, albeit not the ticket we would prefer.

  45. newrouter says:

i need ryan in 1360 limbaugh/mckeesport land destroying jfk/camelot like now or before 10/13/12

  46. BigBangHunter says:

    – Even the true believers are stretching mightily to find elaborate ways to express their frustrations:

    – Arianna: This week started optimistically, with the hope that Paul Ryan’s selection would finally turn campaign 2012 into a big picture discussion about the role of government and the nature of capitalism. Instead, we got outraged reactions to President Obama joking about Seamus the dog, hours of debate over Joe Biden’s use of the word “chains,” and a back-and-forth between the campaigns about which presidential candidate was “unhinged.” It is 78 days until the election, with 25 million Americans unemployed or underemployed, over 13 million homeowners underwater and our national conversation is still on a level of two children fighting in the back seat of the minivan. Maybe for the first debate, we should strap each candidate into a car seat, give them each a juice box, and let them have at it.”

    – Which admittedly is not quite the same as saying “Hey Obama, you weasle wording skunk, when are you going to stop ducking the pres and the issues?”. but probably as close as any Lefty will go in actually saying anything bad about dear leader out loud in public.

    – So far anyway, because there’s still 78 days to go as she said, but if the Pravda media gets the ides its been thrown under the bus that could change in a hurry. Progressives have no allegiance to anything, not even each other. They consider loyalty a suckers game, and wear treachery like a badge of honor.

    – Obama is going to have to make a choice soon to either face the music and let the chips fall where they may, or keep playing rope-a-dope with his fawning mediots. and risk losing their whoring approbations, in which case he might as well kiss his Socialist ass goodbye.

Any chance of a range review when you zero it?

I like to treat myself with shooting oranges at 100 m after zeroing. Silver Whistle minor prefers tomatoes – something about them being zombie-like.

“I was just wondering, does this mean uh…the popularity of the group is waning?”

“Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no…no, no, not at all. I, I, I just think that the.. uh.. their appeal is becoming more selective.”

  52. B Moe says:

    Dare one say, more discriminatory?

  53. bh says:

Looks great, Jeff. Would love to fire that a few times at the range.

  54. bh says:

By the way, it cracks me up that your gun picture has random weight plates in the background.

  55. Dave J says:

Nice rig…when you get into reloading let me know, I have some good loads for the old .308 Winchester. Is your sight picture/eye relief ok with the scope mounted that far forward? I have not shouldered one of those rifles but I suspect the tip of your nose will be near the rear of your rear sight (BUIS) correct?

  56. JohnInFirestone says:

I’m picturing the results video starting out with a wide shot and slow motion zoom up to and along the rifle with Barry White’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” playing in the background.

  57. Jeff G. says:

Yeah, I tinkered with the idea of removing the rear sight, but for now I’m going to leave it. As I’ve gotten more comfortable shouldering the rifle, it’s gotten less and less obtrusive. Until I fire, and it smacks me in the face.

Re: the scope. It’s got about a 3-4″ eye relief and for CQB is meant to be used with both eyes open. It’s mounted with a QD mount, so I can move it toward me a bit if I need to, but for now, without shooting it, I seem to be getting a good picture at about that distance. It’s actually closer in than I’ve seen it on some mounts.

Also, any of you are ever in CO and want to shoot, we can figure out a way to get that done.
