Today is the last day of my son’s wrestling camp, besides which, I’ve been dealing with lots of confusion over the transfer of the rifle I bought, so I haven’t had much time to post — though I’m checking in here occasionally to read.
As soon as I get this stuff all straightened out I’ll return, hopefully later today. In the meantime, take heart that Obama is willing to nationalize the entire private sector — starting with “manufacturing” — in order to save jobs and grow industry. This being what the federal government was meant for, and Obama being the only man qualified to be CEO of the world.
But don’t call it socialism, Marxism, or communism. That’s unhelpful Visigothery, raping and pillaging the language — and besides, moderates! Mustn’t confuse the poor dears with all these labels.
A couple weeks ago I, for the first time since the “instant-check” came into use, bought a gun. I went on “delay” for 5 days and from people I’ve talked to this seems to be not uncommon if that is the problem you are having.
There is a lag time with buying any guns and has been for oh, four years or so? I bought a handgun about that long ago and had a three day wait.
It’s probably nothing unusual.
No, the problem is that the dealer says he never received the info from my FFL guy, who in turns says he emailed it over Tuesday evening. The rifle was supposed to be here today; instead, it hasn’t even shipped. And thus far I’ve been unable to raise my FFL guy this morning.
Because the dealer’s on the east coast, I have about an hour or two tops to get the paperwork in again if I want the rifle to ship today rather than next week, when the store reopens.
And I won’t feel good until I have taken possession of the weapon — especially in the current political climate. So I’m trying this resolved this morning, which could mean finding another FFL and having him fast track the paperwork for me.
Good luck Jeff.
Leigh, many/most have less than an hour to wait for approval but some seem to always be delayed, it is said because there is a person with the same name who is a problem, and others who normally get approved quickly will have delays on occasion.
Personally I think it is to screw with gun show sales.
Weird; I’ve not had to wait longer than it took for them to run the check. I’ve not bought anything intrastate, though, so that probably makes things… “fun”.
Me either — and that includes at gun shows. But yeah, those were always pay-and-take-it-home purchases.
Crawford, it depends on the state you’re in. We’ve got a five business day wait here, so you’re in the maternity ward until “a week from tomorrow” after you’ve put a deposit down and had the background check run. But they can tell you instantly if you’ve cleared the check. Cali has 10 days and NY as much as 6 months.
In related news, I’ve just fallen in love with an online vendor, LaRue Tactical. The first thing that got me was that they sent me a tracking number 3 hours and 16 minutes after I placed my order. Now, it just showed up…4 days later…and packed with free swag perfectly designed to melt my cold, cold heart.
/swoon
If the seller does not have past dealing with the FFL, that is has them on file, the FFL has to mail a “wet signature” certification to the seller. E-mail will not do.
Always look for an FFL they already have on record. If you are buying from Bud’s, they have quite a few.
An armadillo bottle opener!? Pablo, that is <slight delay for emphasis> cool.
And alongside a Pocket Constitution? Yes. Extremely cool.
Pablo — no waiting period in Ohio.
And on the subject of online vendors — LuckyGunner gets my vote. Ordered and they shipped before close of business that day. Two days later, the ammo was on my doorstep. Turned out to be a little short — and they made it up, no questions asked, in two more business days.

After Obama’s admissions yesterday (against interest, I believe, though he surely doesn’t see it that way), I wonder, does anyone, do people in general recall his hesitancy before he first declared his desire to pursue the Presidency, as he pondered the gravity of his (still partially hidden) objectives?
After yesterday however, can there be any doubt what it was that gave him pause?
His wife probably understood. My guess is she could tell him, Barry, this is not going to end well for you.
When doing non F2F transactions, I always get the FFL info from the guy that is going to do my transfer and send it either by fax or email to the dealer and request confirmation of receipt.
You will probably go through the new mandatory wait period for known right wing blogger/agitators once you fill out the transfer form. Dont forget to try different brands and loads of ammo to see what your rifle likes best.
I have a 6.8SPCII AR that I will put up against any off the shelf bolt rifle for accuracy. I resisted getting a black rifle for years but now regret that I didnt make the jump sooner. Great fun. I will be carrying it afield this coming fall for white-tailed deer.
Look for the new Obama attack add this weekend: “Romney killed my wife 10 years in a row”.
geoff, some of the insta check delays are do to the volume that the state po-po have to process. If you have paperwork on file with the Feds for employment, approval can also be delayed for some counter intuitive reason….supposedly from what I hear.
“Beverage Entry Tool.” *snerk*
After Obama’s admissions yesterday
Which ones? It’s hard to keep up…
I had in mind the serial suggestions the US ought to pursue further nationalization of various industries, but yes, it is hard to keep up.
My mistake Jeff. I was thinking you had purchased this rifle at a gun shop not a show. I’ve never bought anything at a gunshow so no help there.
Here in MN, I understand that if the seller has a copy of the local dealer’s FFL, the transfer can occur as soon as the gun arrives at the dealer, with the background check being done once you show up in person and fill out some paperwork and pay the transfer fee. However, the buyer must have a handgun purchase permit (which is free, beyond the hassle of filling out paperwork) for a handgun or a rifle that will accept a magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds.
No, there needs to be a new word for the idea that Obama is the only man qualified to be CEO of the world.
Something equal parts insanity/hilarity/horror I am thinking.
Really – we need to get totally serious about how we’re going to survive another 4 years of Obama, plus another economic collapse next year when Europe falls apart, and the continued loss of our liberties. Guns are only the first step.
An entire generation of college kids are sitting in their parents’ basements, with no hope of careers for the next 10 years. All the Boomers are retiring onto SS, my dad being one of them this year.
I’m pricing farmland. My goal is to buy 5 acres somewhere remote. I think that when the rioting starts, I want a little potato and goat farm, far from the cities. Hopefully we’ll survive the revolution (and our neighbors likely won’t be marxists either)
either that or we move to Costa Rica. Not sure which one is a better plan at this point. suggestions are welcome.
What part of the country?
I bought it from a gun shop but online. The gun shop is in a different state.
It must be the intrastate thing that is holding you up. Since the Batman shooter bought stuff online, maybe Colorado is flagging gun purchases? You’ve made a few purchases recently, so you may be on a watch list.
R’lyehism.
Ai! Ai! Obama ftagn!
My FFL is listed on Gunbroker.
I’d chalk it up to government inefficiency, then.
I’d rather face Cthulhu. Sure, he’ll enslave my soul and devour my flesh while ensuring I feel every bite — but he won’t demand I act grateful for it.
“My FFL is listed on Gunbroker”
Not enough, unless seller and FFL had prior dealings with each other and the seller has the FFL’s “wet signed” (not a copy) certification on file.
This isn’t necessarily advise for Jeff, just my 2 cents .
I recommend going with “Bud’s Gunshop” or “Gallery of Guns” if buying a new firearm. Good prices and service. Lots of FFLs on file.
Gunbroker is like Ebay with multiple sellers. Better for the used market.
That was your second mistakeYou’re braver than I am.
I didn’t buy this through Gunbroker. I bought it from a gun shop that had the specific rifle available. Finding the SCAR in a 17 isn’t as easy as you’d think. My local gun store guy could have ordered one for me but it would have been about $200 more. Bud’s didn’t have it. I actually found it advertised on Gunsamerica. And it was over $200 less than the one I’d just passed up at the Tanner gun show a few days before.
Incidentally, I talked to some vendors I know at the Tanner show who had sold two on Saturday (I didn’t make it down there until Sunday) for about $600 more than I paid. Only two other vendors had the SCAR 17s — one in black going at $3169, the other in FDE going at $2850.
quite a zombie killer.
Just guessing what the hold up might be based on past experience.
Lots of shops sell through Gunbroker so, I thought that is what you meant. Still goes, seller and FFL have to have a past relation for the shipment to go quicker. Otherwise bad old ” black rifles” would be just flying around the country in FedEx cargo planes willy nilly.
“either that or we move to Costa Rica. Not sure which one is a better plan at this point. suggestions are welcome.” If you are serious about Costa Rica, you should take a two week vacation to get the lay of the land. Rent a car and drive around the country. You need at least a week, as you lose the first and last days to travel.
