A final few words on the Eason Jordan affair (and Jordan’s subsequent resignation)

My guess is that in the cold, clarifying light of morning, how Jordan’s remarks actually played on that Davos tape was even worse than we’d been led to expect—and that, recognizing this, Jordan didn’t so much resign as he was coached by the CNN brass on how best to salvage what remained of his dignity.

I echo Jim Geraghty’s parting thoughts:

I would have preferred the tape come out, and that the public’s reaction to what Jordan said and didn’t say determine just what consequences, if any, he deserved. But he did not escape accountability, which is what I was expecting the past couple days. And we learned that a lot of people in major media institutions thought this was a tempest in a teacup, unworthy of even a paragraph of coverage.

NOW, AS A CITIZEN JOURNALIST, WHERE IS MY DAMN PIE?*

****

related:  Michelle Malkin, one of the driving forces behind publicizing this story, has a link and trackback-rich retrospective here.  And LaShawn Barber, another driving force, has even more links and commentary.  Because I don’t know about you all, but I just can’t get enough of this story.

SAVE EASON—IF ONLY SO WE CAN SLAY HIM AGAIN LATER!  AVENGE “JEFF GANNON”!*

FEAR THE WARBLOGGER, FOR HE IS STRONG AND BRAVE!*

Hey, you know what?  Hugh Hewitt: he may be an over-the-top blog triumphalist cheerleader, but he’s an over-the-top blog triumphalist cheerleader who gets results.

I imagine you will now find him more insufferable than ever.

  2. Matt30 says:

One of these days I gotta start reading them there right wing blogs again.  I barely know who Eason Jordan is, and I’m just now getting to know Jeff Gannon.

Being out of the loop like this, my life seems so…..empty isn’t quite the word for it.

  3. Maybe you are strong, but I am just “Brave Sir Robin” ever if Cap’n Ed thinks he’s trademarked that for his Sen. Dayton stuff.

  4. Jeff Goldstein says:

    Matt30 —

I know how you feel.  Sometimes, when I forget that Condi Rice is an Aunt Jemima and George Bush a stupid, tongue-tied Chimp warmonger, I go and read the lefty sites.

  5. Pluto's Dad says:

So … I guess this means Dan Rather felt like he didn’t have any dignity left to salvage?

  6. capt joe says:

Hey, don’t forget that those other jewels of the compassionate left

Hesiod and his portrayal of “Powell and Mr step and fetch-it”

And off course there is the regular discussion on Atrios about raping and murdering Michelle Malkin.

If I want to see what the left is about, that where I go.

I just wish it was a joke.

  7. Blackjack says:

Maybe I’m the only right-of-center blogdude who still isn’t into the whole Eason Jordan thing.  I’m not knocking with Hugh & co. were able to do, but I think they were too quick to chalk this whole thing up to liberal bias.  Maybe that was part of it, but I still think the main reason it didn’t get MSM coverage was that “Mary Joe in Dubuque doesn’t know who Eason Jordan is and doesn’t give a shit”.  Unlike bloggers, MSM has to give a crap about things like that.  If bloggers want to say “I don’t care what Mary Joe thinks”, fine—that is their right.  I just want them to remember that when the whole thing about blogs replacing the MSM comes up.

OK, enough soapbox.  Sorry for the rant, Jeff.  I’ll be sure to put in a bonus dickjoke in my next comment smile

  8. Diana says:

    Blackjack –

“Mary Joe in Dubuque doesn’t know who Eason Jordan is and doesn’t give a shit”.

…but, CNN’s become an international institution since 1991 and is somebody’s “definitive answer” to what’s going on in the US.  CNN’s opinions are gospel in some obscure corners of this small world.

Hell, I knew who Eason Jordan is/was.

  9. Diana says:

You Americans sometimes forget how intensely the rest of the world watches you!  It’s probably because you’re rarely boring!

The BBC, Euro newspapers and pretty much any other news source around the world is continually either AGOG or AGHAST (and I’m pretty sure suffering from penis envy)!  It’s pretty amusing actually.

    There’s my obligatory dick joke!

  10. dorkafork says:

Mary Joe in Dubuke may not recognize the name “Eason Jordan” but if she hears “CNN’s chief news executive” she’ll get the idea.

  11. Diana says:

You’ll notice, please, that I said “opinions” , not “factual reporting”!

  12. Joe says:

I didn’t marry anyone in Dubuque, but I still knew who Jordan Eason was. That’s right, was, you has-been. You’re just a blog-bitch now, Jordan.

  13. Jeff Goldstein says:

    Blackjack —

This is my second post on the subject.  I was interested in the resolution—and like I said above, I was hoping that the release of the tape would clear matters up—but I wasn’t super interested in pumping the story.

    And I’m right of center.

  14. Vanderleun says:

when I read: “SAVE EASON—IF ONLY SO WE CAN SLAY HIM AGAIN LATER!  AVENGE “JEFF GANNON”!*”

    and then i read

i gets me thinking, ya know.

  15. Steve Skubinna says:

And don’t forget Hesiod and the “When is Steven Den Beste just going to DIE already?” pool.

He’ll probably claim I’m mischaracterizng his position.  I hope he already has a rat’s ass, because that’s precisely what I do not give one of.

  16. Blackjack-

The MSM pushes unknowns when it suits their agenda. Duh.

  17. TomB says:

Wow Jeff, I just read the posts from Atrios on Malkin’s blog. That stuff is a little extreme even for me.

We need to work on our nastyness.

  18. Sean M. says:

Tom, you jackbooted fascist thug–don’t you know that Atrios’s commenters are patriotically dissenting by repeatedly calling for the rape and/or murder of Michelle Malkin?

    Shame on you.

  19. Were Atrios or Hesiod to fall into my custody … why I would have to think for minutes about what to do … oh, the dilemma on how to inculcate respect for women in those eunuchs. …

  20. Blackjack says:

Hey, it’s like I said—I understand some folks are happy about bagging Jordan and I’m not out to piss in anybody’s Corn Flakes.  I just thought some of the blogs (not PW) were a little too quick to shoehorn the whole thing into another Rathergate.  Yes, Jordan has a powerful position at a powerful company, but the average Joe out there (and blog regulars are not the average Joe in terms of news awareness) wouldn’t know Jordan from a hole in the ground.  I certainly don’t deny a liberal bias in the media; I’m simply saying I think the “lack of sexiness” of the story was as significant a factor for lack of MSM coverage as liberal bias.

Oh, right—sources tell me Eason Jordan is hung like a light switch.  Hey, I promised.

  21. Attila Girl says:

Robin, we don’t send a man to do a woman’s job: there are a lot of well-armed women out here on the right (even ones who don’t agree with Michelle on a few pivotal political issues). And we’re smart: no prints, no DNA. No fiber evidence. No landmarks spotted on the way to the location where the therapies will be performed.

They’ll be dropped off again a week or so later: drugged, disoriented, missing a few items and unable to sit down.

Malkin will have an iron-clad alibi for the time frame in question, and no knowledge of the event until she reads of it in the paper.

Quick question: is there a grade of sandpaper that will make a broom handle really splintery? Just askin’.

    (Turing: hard.)

  22. bolivar says:

Early last year I emailed Michelle about just this subject.  I told her I loved her work (and I still do) and that by not opening to comments she was doing her readers a disservice.  And this is to show you what a class act she is, she emailed me back the next day telling me almost the exact same thing she wrote here.  She said and I quote:

“don’t have time to install a registration system right now. Maybe later. In the meantime, I won’t have people using my server for their smut.

    Michelle Malkin

    Syndicated columnist/author

I love this woman and only wish her well.  She is a class act and the fact that she is standing up to the LLL slime really shows her moxie….now that is another story…

  23. Bill Quick says:

I still think the main reason it didn’t get MSM coverage was that “Mary Joe in Dubuque doesn’t know who Eason Jordan is and doesn’t give a shit”.

It was a major story, and the MSM knew it.  The purported job of “the Fourth Estate” is to educate the public about what is happening in the world, and provide both context and basic knowledge to the news consumer can understand what it happening.

The “it’s not news” judgment is a cop-out, the same one the MSM used in protecting every single one of its sacred cows from Kleagle Byrd to BJ Clinton to John Kerry’s anti-war history, to Eason Jordan.

  24. kelly says:

    What Bill Quick said.
