Red state values?

Received this little anecdote via email:

T. Bubba Bechtol, part-time City Councilman from Midland, TX, was asked on a local live radio talk show the other day just what he thought of the allegations of torture of the Iraqi prisoners.

His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience. His reply:  “If hooking up an Iraqi prisoner’s scrotum to a car’s battery cables will save one American GI’s life, then I have just two things to say:

“Red is positive.

“Black is negative.”

For what it’s worth, the technical aspects of Mr. Bechtol’s comments have since been confirmed by a guy I know who works at Pep Boys.

26 Replies to “Red state values?”

  1. Sticky B says:

I don’t live in Midland, but I do live in the Midland/Odessa TV and radio market, and to be quite frank, I can’t imagine anyone being ejected from one of the local media outlets for expressing that opinion.

  2. Jeff Goldstein says:

My Pep Boys guy couldn’t confirm that part, either.

  3. A fine scotch says:

Having just changed my car battery, I can cofirm Mr.  Bechtol’s statements.

PS – My Turing word is congress and I just read the post below about Condi.  Is this normal?

  4. Hector Vex says:

I couldn’t agree more. Red IS positive.

  5. That would hurt even without electricity.

  6. Scott P says:

Righty-tighty and lefty-loosey may also have some context here…

  7. Line stolen from Dennis Leary. I think he was talking about animal testing.

  8. john says:

    Great quote. I’ll use it!

  9. mojo says:

For the record, military field telephones work just dandy, too.

    Don’t ask.

  10. E. Nough says:

    Eric is right.

“If hooking a monkey up to a car battery is going to find a cure for AIDS, then I’ve only got two things to say: Red is positive and black is negative.”

Dennis Leary on animal testing, many years ago

  11. Wes says:

A good line, but it wasn’t from Dennis Leary.  It is from Nick DiPaolo’s set years ago.

  12. The Right Reverend Al Sharpton says:

    “Black is negative.”

Now we have to deal with redneck bigots perpetuating deleterious myths about the “negative” nature of the African man.  Where will it end?  And it’s no coincidence that the wealthy, white terrorists are given preferential treatment over the downtrodden minority terrorists.

For those advocating torture to save American lives, remember that today’s terrorist is tomorrow’s friend. *

    *Actual quote.  Yikes.

  13. mojo, they used to use something called the “Tucker telephone” in the Arkansas state prison system.

  14. jeremy in NYC says:

    Uhhhhhhh…….here’s snopes on the subject

  15. Jeff Goldstein says:

I sure am glad my Pep Boys guy only confirmed the technical aspects of the quote…

  16. jon says:

If using jumper cables, which part of the prisoner replaces the engine block?  I wouldn’t want to let an ungrounded “bad” battery ruin a good one.  Red is naughty bits, where do I put the black?  And are safety goggles still recommended?

Damnit, I’ll never have what it takes to join the CIA.

  17. erp says:

Are there really people who would rather see soldiers die rather than discomode a murdering terrorist who has information that could save him?How about a kidnapped child?

  18. McGehee says:

It’s a lot simpler if instead of hooking up the cables, you just beat the bastard with them. The clamps make for some really nice effects on the face.

  19. Matt Evans says:

I have a feeling we’ll see more of people coming out for torture.  While the moonbats bark about how the “majority” of the country doesn’t condone torture, just about every conservative I’ve talked with in recent weeks would agree that torture of known Al Queda or terrorists caught in the act is permissible under just about every circumstances.

Terrorists gave up any rights they might have to avoid having their scrotums electricuted when they joined the jihad, imho.

  20. shank says:

That’s why I keep jumper cables in my car.  Not only do they help a friend in need, but if I run into any fatwa-ing terrorist jihad sonufabitches, I can fricasee that ass right then and there; MacGuyver style.

  21. shank, jumper cables should really only be used by someone with the professional training and experience to properly apply them.  If an amateur tried to use jumper cables, why I don’t know what might happen … you might even have the cables taken from you and used on you.

For counterterrorist work, I suggest replacing your jumper cables with a .45 automatic.

  22. kyle says:

It’s important to stay on top of different ways to counteract this new* terrorism problem.

‘Cause remember, these terrorists are only reacting to Bush’s Zionist policies and America’s evil, anti-Islam ways, doncha know.

*As long as 1937 is considered “new”

  23. kyle says:

That link doesn’t show the article very clearly.  I do apologize.  You can see it better if you go to lileks.com – it’s an article from a St. Paul newspaper (1937 vintage) about a Muslim cleric who was executed in Jerusalem for terrorism.  Same stink, different turd, yes?

  24. McGehee says:

But… but… I thought Arab terrorism was caused by U.S. support of the State of Israel! Israel wasn’t established yet in 1937.

My whole concept of Middle East peace and justice has been shaken. I need to go lie down.

  25. Thief Patrol says:

RE: Mr. Bechtol taking credit for Nick Di Paolo’s writing.…Hmmmm – this is clearly a stolen bit – since it is credited to Nick Di Paolo on about 100 web pages – and he wrote this joke back in 1993 – it was on a few weeks ago – in his 1993 episode of HBO’s Young Comedian special. It is also on his CD “Born This Way” – which was COPYRIGHTED in 1998. Tsk Tsk Mr. Bechtol it is a very sad thing to try to be a clever hero by stealing other peoples words…
