Computer Audio Bleg

Anyone know how to record both ends of a Yahoo Messenger (or other) voice chat conversation?—or, alternately, how to record both ends of an internet telephone conversation with very clear quality? (Both parties are using a USB headset mic to input sound.)

Please let me know, in the comments or via email.

And be advised:  THE FUTURE OF CITIZEN JOURNALISM DEPENDS UPON YOU AND YOUR EXPERTISE!

CHARGE!

Thanks. I’ll give it a shot.

  2. Jeff Goldstein says:

Well, it’s no longer free, but I’ll try it out anyway.

  3. JWebb says:

    Charge, indeed.

this might be closer to answering your question.

    Roy —

I downloaded total record fro Highcriteria and tried it.  Could only get it to record one side of the conversation.

Emailed the High Criteria people who, frankly, weren’t very helpful, because they only reply through email (rather than, say, through IM, where you can get real time help).

I suspect it works, I just can’t figure out how to set it up properly.

All2WAV Recorder. Free, works perfectly every time.  If the sound is travelling through your sound card, you can record it.

Make sure you are adjusting the RECORDING levels in your sound control panel if you are getting a blank recording.

I use it to strip audio from video files, record phone conversations via line-in, pull audio off my XM PCR, etc.  *Anything* that runs through the sound card can be recorded to Wav and then transcoded to mp3, OGG, whatever you want.

A lot of trouble to go to for a cheese interview.

If you’re going to be making recorded phone calls, may I suggest the soundboards at i-am-bored.com?  Great fun.

Yes, I am 13 years old.  Leave me alone.

On the Mac end, there is a free utility called WireTap that sounds very similar to All2WAV recorder.  It also monitors the main output of the computer and is very handy for recording streaming anything.  It records to a AIFF format which can than be converted to MP3 in iTunes.

You can download it a CNET or maybe download.com.

  11. Jeff, I’m assuming by your brilliant comedic wit and disturbed sense of propriety that you’re a Mac user.  Is that correct?  Or it’s also possible that your psychoses have been caused by years of Windows induced manic rages.  So which is it?  Mac or PC?  True brilliance or “A Beautiful Mind” brilliance?

  12. Mike says:

I’m pretty sure what you want to do is impossible.  Just give up.

  13. Matt Moore says:

Pretty sure Jeff is a PC user. Back in the day this site looked like crap in Safari.

  14. Jeff Goldstein says:

Yes, I am a PC user.  But if I could afford a really nice Mac I’d have one to do video editing on.

I finally figured out what Jeff is up to.  He’s going to become a webcam girl.

  16. JWebb says:

Maybe a webcam girl, but Jeff and Bill at INDC are in kahoots on something…

  17. Well, JW, I factored in Bill …. obviously it will be a fetish site.

On a rational level, I can’t really explain why PW is a “must-read” for me—even before I clean the spam out of my email.

Then I come home to see how Martha’s day went, and hit a comment like RR’s, and the 10,000 opportunities to start my own business with internet Viagra increasing the penile dimensions of my Nigerian bank account seem like……..well, I guess they’re crap anyway, aren’t they?

Word: “possible”—Okay….how the hell are these selected, anyway?
