Memorial Day 2012 [Darleen Click] UPDATED

I just put up my flag this morning. My gratitude, thoughts and prayers to all the members of our military, past and present, and their families.

UPDATE Nice Deb has a great series of videos in honor and tribute to the day.

    What Darleen said.

  2. motionview says:

    These warriors also.

    Musical tribute .

Obama’s reelection prospects are by now well understood to be doomed to failure, most especially within the Obama camp itself. The question then is, to which of the possible wars of choice will Obama cynically turn in an effort to save his political life? Syria? Pakistan? Iran? Yemen? Some other potential area of crisis? Be on your guard warfighters. You will be used.

  5. motionview says:

Another type of warrior enters the fray.

Flame can gather data files, remotely change settings on computers, turn on PC microphones to record conversations, take screen shots and log instant messaging chats.

  6. motionview says:

And now for something completely different

The White House announced today that First Lady Michelle Obama will sponsor the USS Illinois, the first all female submarine force. The newest submarine “is expected to join the fleet in late 2015,” according to the White House.

Yeah. I “expect” there may be a change of plans after Jan 2013.

  7. cranky-d says:

The armed forces are toys to progressives. Gimmicks like this prove it.

  8. Roddy Boyd says:

Thanks to all who served, in all branches, at all times.
We are able to enjoy much from your hard work, risk and diligence.

  9. Slartibartfast says:

“the first all female” doesn’t seem to be at the linked destination

  10. McGehee says:

These lives were given as grace to a country that even at its best could never deserve it fully. Our thanks can never be enough.

That’s why we set aside a day each year in which to keep saying it.

  11. LBascom says:

A couple of Hornets buzzed my house this morning, the first I’ve seen here in 5 years. I think they were doing a fly over of the ceremonies at the cemetery in town, and our house just happened to be the turn around spot. Anyway, pretty cool way to start the day…

  12. motionview says:

They re-wrote that story without notice of the changes; the quote I had above used to be in the story. Headline changed too. But remember Slarti they are the professionals.

  13. dicentra says:

Remember that time when Obama was speaking at his first Memorial Day gig and he recognized some of the fallen among the audience?

    That was awesome.

  14. motionview says:

Via email from the Weekly Standard.

This has been added to the end of the post:
UPDATE: This post has been updated to reflect the fact that there are no plans to make the USS Illinois an all female submarine. We apologize for our mistake. All best, The Web Editors

    Very responsive.

Isn’t it just this side of a gimmick, i.e., they’re trying to avoid the inevitable sexual tension when you’ve got men and women in such close quarters?

Instead of being Yet Another Feminist Pipe Dream, I mean.

  16. dicentra says:

    Heh.

    Never mind. </Litella>

  17. dicentra says:

Also, no disrespect, but the Coast Guard anthem sounds like an old Texaco commercial to me.

    Is it?

  18. leigh says:

All female crew? No good can come of this. Of course, the enemy better watch their asses when the entire crew is PMSing at the same time and there’s no chocolate in the galley.

Kind of sounds like that old movie “Operation Petticoat”, doesn’t it? Maybe they can paint the submarine pink.

  19. B Moe says:

What do you think the % hetero would be on an all woman’s submarine crew?

Did I just say that out loud?

  20. leigh says:

It’s not like we weren’t all thinking it, B Moe.

  21. bh says:

My deep thanks to all who’ve served. That goes doubly so for pw people who’ve also occasionally cracked me up or taught me something around here as well.

    Cheers.

  22. motionview says:

Really? Like who, your mentors, allies, and comrades?

OT: Is it wrong of me to find it hilarious that this chick bit the dust in a Lexus?

  24. LBascom says:

    Kinda…

  25. leigh says:

It would have truly been hilarious if she were a law student. But, yeah.

  27. LTC John says:

Just about the dead – the Gold Star families too. Not thank a veteran, or have a sale day, or the unofficial start to summer….just about those who died in service to this country.

  28. Darleen says:

    LTC John

With all due respect, not all combat deaths happen on the battlefield …

my grand-uncle, Ray Aseltine, fought in WWI, Marines under Pershing, at Verdun. Was taken POW but Germans didn’t inform the enemy of POWs so he was listed as MIA until the war was over and he was shoved out of the “hospital” where he had been warehoused to die.

He had been gassed in the trenches; when captured on patrol, stripped of his clothes and given rags to wear. He became slave labor (mines), with starvation rations (he watched a poor starving Russian soldier clubbed to death by rifle butts by German guards for the crime of stealing a potato off the dirt where it had fallen off a wagon)

He lost almost 1/3 his weight. He finally did come home, got married, had three children and died of the physical consequences of his service.

He was 27 when he died.

  29. leigh says:

    That’s heart-breaking, Darleen.

One of my grandmother’s brothers survived the Bataan Death March only to come home and get murdered while sleeping in his car one night. No one was ever caught and it haunted my grandmother all her life.

  30. bh says:

I take LTC John’s point though.

I was out at the cemetery before typing my comment and it’s still my base instinct to thank all the veterans and active duty people as well. Don’t want to over think it but it probably comes down to respecting both the living and the dead for the same reason.

But, yeah, it’s not Veterans Day.

  31. leigh says:

But, yeah, it’s not Veterans Day.

No, it is not. It is very moving (to tears for softies like me) to visit the veterans cemeteries. I lived not far from Ft. Rosencrantz in San Diego, where Romney and McCain were today, and it is a very solemn place. I get the same overwhelming feeling of sadness at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in DC.

  32. SDN says:

“Maybe they can paint the submarine pink.”

Actually, leigh, according to Clay Blair’s Silent Victory: a 2 volume history of American submarines in WWII, painting the periscope and the conning tower pink wasn’t uncommon because submariners believed that pink tended to “pick up” the color reflected off the surrounding water and made the scope harder to spot.

  33. Darleen says:

Here’s the PDF of the NYTimes, May 13, 1918. Go to the bottom right-hand corner and there’s Ray Aseltine’s name as MIA. He was 17 y/o at the time.

  34. leigh says:

Whadda ya know? That’s interesting, SDN. I lived in SD for almost 7 years and I still don’t know much about the Navy.

  35. Danger says:

Just back from a week at Mousville with the dependants.

    Happy Memorial day all!

  36. jdw says:

Krauthammering on #FORWARD and Democrats. He does so so well!

  37. bh says:

    This thing about pink periscopes?

That is a cool/crazy bit of trivia.

  38. geoffb says:

Maybe they can paint the submarine pink

    OK. From Argghhh!!!

  39. bh says:

That is just so, so strange, Geoff.

I imagine that working far better if you were looking for that sub in a sunset with those reds and pinks. I don’t understand it at all as an all purpose color though.

  40. motionview says:

The Hill reports the Michelle Obama all-female submariner story
That is two sets of reporters and editors who have let that story through. Either our military has been so politically corrected that we do have a single cycle submarine, or this administration is so ridiculously prog that savvy DC reporters and editors consider an all-female submarine a perfectly reasonable possibility.

  41. motionview says:

comment left on The Hill’s story about the Illinois:

Hello, this is the Public Affairs Officer for Submarine Forces. The USS ILLINOIS will not have an all female crew. Today the First Lady accepted sponsorship of the USS ILLINOIS and she met with the group of female Submariners that have already reported to Submarines. This group is the first for the US Navy. Currently we have females serving on some ballistic and guided missile Submarines. The USS ILLINOIS will be a Virginia class Submarine. At this time, we do not have any females serving on SSNs. Tried to call your agency to correct, but received an answering machine.

  42. TRHein says:

I have listened to TAPS most allof my adult life. It is the most profound piece that one can imagine.

  43. Swen says:

Saw this performed live yesterday at Coors Field. Yeah, I got all teary.

  44. LTC John says:

    Darleen,

I never said “combat deaths” – just the dead and their families. Your story fits that.
