Dems on super committee walk away from negotiating table

The plan appears to be to refuse compromise, then blame the GOP for failure to compromise.

A new dosage of the same old tactics.

And bless our heart if the very same “sane” Republicans who now presume to tell us who is electable weren’t several months back telling us we had to make a deal with the Democrats and the President that would give him more money to spend, the country more debt (and what turned out to be a drop in our credit rating), and the Congress time to kick the can down the road — only to end up in exactly the same spot politically.

But hey: Herman Cain hasn’t handled the allegations of improprieties against him — which include no actual instances of sex, by the way — in a manner that appears to these same people, polished and politically “professional.”

— Which, you know what? Some of us believe that may just be a mark in his favor.

    Where’s the Italian ten-year now? And the Dem’s don’t have a clue.

Durbin, breaking with Dems, applauds GOP offer on taxes as a breakthrough
By Alexander Bolton – 11/09/11 12:41 PM ET

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) diverged from Democratic colleagues Wednesday and applauded the Republican offer to raise $300 billion in new taxes as part of a deficit-reduction deal.

Democratic members of the supercommittee on Tuesday had panned the GOP offer as insufficient.

    Why not? It usually works.

The Democrats will be happy to pocket the Boehner defense cuts I think and call it a day

We should not fear the sequestration.

Don’t give them one red cent in new taxes, no matter what’s threatened. Taxed Enough Already.

  8. They will keep using it until it doesn’t work.

Would that mean that were there black babies involved, he wouldn’t care either?

I think we should immediately pass some legislation in the House cutting all budgets across the board for the required amount.

    Don’t wait.

  11. Honestly, even if they raise taxes the main problem of runaway spending will continue on unabated.

I think they’ll pocket those, lay down the Eevoll Republicans cut Medicare! card and then go bang a couple of cocktail waitresses while our players are busy trying to figure out if they should fold or raise.

cutting all budgets across the board

    Forget budgets: cut DEPARTMENTS.

Otherwise, you’re just running the lawn mower over the weeds instead of hitting them with RoundUp™.

  15. bh says:

    Yeah, I like that, di.

  16. bh says:

Wait, are you saying having all departments within a larger budget (individual departments under DoD or DoJ, for instance) take an across the board cut?

Or are you saying eliminating departments (like the DoD or DoJ)?

If it’s the former, I’d like it.

If it’s the latter, it doesn’t work as a political tactic as I’m proposing across the board cuts.

This is political theater. Offering across the board cuts is a response to that. No positive scenarios are actually on the table until Obama is gone.

  17. Ernst Schreiber says:

Another good piece of political theater: Pass a bill requiring Congress to pass a budget before any Member collects another pay check.

You could also stipulate that they don’t get to collect back pay. And I think they ought to go after retirement and health plan contributions too.

If they’re not going to work, why should we be paying them?

  18. bh says:

    I like that, Ernst.

The Reps should make their proposal public now. Call the bluff. When the Republicans play the game of leaks and press negotiating they lose. Are they afraid the Dems will accuse them of bad faith? How ludicrous.

  20. Maybe treat them like stockholders of the United States? If the country is successful, they get paid. If not, they don’t.
