IIRC back in the 2004 election they had a middle-aged suburban Dem hausfrau who traveled to Detroit or Minneapolis or some such flyover hellhole and was videotaped handing out cartons of cigarettes to the homeless to buy their votes on Election day. She was quite proud of herself in the interviews afterwards.
OK, basically I got everything wrong there except the fact it happened. Gore 2000 election, NY heiress not hausfrau: Wisconsin officials convicted a New York heiress who was working for Al Gore by giving homeless people cigarettes if they rode in a van to the polls and voted.

I think a “ten spot” in NY will buy you a pack not a carton so votes have undergone a major deflation. They are no doubt a part of the Obama administration’s CPI and used to keep the reported inflation down.
Smokes are 11 to 12 dollars pack in NYC Geoffb(taxes mostly). Vote deflation indeed.

This is a very outdated story. These days they don’t have to pay people to actually go to the poll and vote, they just print’em up and stick’em in a car trunk. Just in case…
