I've got myself a Tebow hangover

I blame Jesus.

****
update: and also that 20-yard game-winning TD run — the longest TD run by an NFL quarterback to win a game with under a minute to go in the history of ever.

    God? Laughing his ass off.

  2. Slartibartfast says:

    Stupid lifeydoodle.

I could watch that over and over.

  3. Blake says:

I laughed my ass of when I saw that Tebow ran for the winning touchdown.

Then, there’s the following about Tebow:

“Not only that, but in his explanation of what happened on the last play of the drive, when he broke the 20-yard touchdown run against the Jets’ blitz, he basically gave a course on how to read defenses. It was too long of an answer to put here, but he said, “They were playing the corners pretty hard off, and we ran a three-vertical concept against them. I saw (safety Eric Smith) coming off the left side, and he came and he hugged tight . . .

It went on and on. You get the idea. And it is doubtful that Sanchez, who is not reaching the heights expected of him this season, could see that much that fast.”

    Missed it completely. Wow.

Just to add to the underlying theme.

Military officials at Camp Pendleton are investigating a cross that was erected by a group of former Marines to honor their fallen colleagues, after an atheist group objected to the monument.
    […]
the former Marines as they carried the 13-foot cross up a steep hill – a Veterans Day journey that took two hours. They were accompanied by the widows and children of the fallen Marines
    […]
The cross was erected and dedicated to the memory of Maj. Douglas Zembiec, Maj. Ray Mendoza, Lance Cpl. Aaron Austin and Lance Cpl. Robert Zurheide. It replaced another cross that was destroyed by a brush fire in 2003.

The former Marines chose to carry the cross, rather than use a vehicle. They told the newspaper that carrying the cross was an act of profound symbolism: the fallen are never forgotten, the mission never falters.

But for Jason Torpy, president of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, the cross is a violation of the constitutional separation of church and state.
    […]
Torpy said he could have given the Marines a pass.

“Maybe, but not really,” he said. “This is a large, 13-foot cross – generally these things are posted up in places that lord over the surrounding area.”

He said the allowing the cross to remain on Camp Pendleton property is “exploiting my service in order to gain special privileges for Christianity and that’s not fair to me.”

I don’t really follow NFL, but for heaven’s sake, that article was jawdropping. “Goody two shoes”? It’s an old cliche that the NFL is referred to as the National Felons League and Tebow is hated for actually being authentically a good guy? WTF? And he’s got a coach trying to sabotage him?

    Good lord.

  8. Matt says:

GReat comeback and end drive. ESPN “experts” still think Teebow is worse than Hitler and will never win another game in the NFL. I really wish there was a Fox news type alternative to ESPN. Next up : Keith Olberman gives his us his opinion of Teebow. Riveting!

…except of course that non-atheists aren’t free to express their thinking — not if the atheists have anything to say about it.

  10. Happy times in Denver. The media people are beside themselves right now and still can’t let go of the one and only model they have in their heads for how professional football is to be played. The Jesus stuff is just icing on the cake.

Minor point, perhaps it was overtime but I seem to remember Michael Vick having a much longer run to end a game.

  11. He said the allowing the cross to remain on Camp Pendleton property is “exploiting my service in order to gain special privileges for Christianity and that’s not fair to me.”

    Because it’s all about you.

  12. Blake says:

    Darlene,

This is one of the tamer articles. At least the writer somewhat grudgingly admits that Tebow has something going on.

I believe Chris Collinsworth came right out and said that he though most of the Tebow hate was due to Tebow’s Christianity.

  13. Blake says:

    though = thought

  14. Slartibartfast says:

I saw Tebow bench-press an entire planet, once.

  15. LBascom says:

I saw Tebow go to bended knee after the game, in a circle of other players, Bronco and Jet.

Softened my stone heart, it did.

  16. LBascom says:

Later i heard a reporter ask how he felt about all those people that hate his guts, and Tebow said he learned in college not to worry about what he can’t control, and he’ll let them be them and he’ll do him.

I’m starting to think Tebow is ESPN’s Palin.

  17. Jeff G. says:

He is, Lee. The media hates him because he ruins their pose that their cynicism is the way of the world, not Tebow’s optimism.

  18. dicentra says:

the longest TD run by an NFL quarterback to win a game with under a minute to go

This always kills me about sports statistics: a long chain of conditionals and you can make ANYTHING into a record.

Not to diminish anything from the actual accomplishment, of course. I just find it endlessly amusing.

  19. dicentra says:

I’m starting to think Tebow is ESPN’s Palin.

I’m afraid that anyone who talks about Jesus openly in certain circles—politics, sports, academia—and isn’t doing so ironically or cynically, is going to get his or her face shot off.

Those of us raised religious find out pretty early that the “goody two-shoes” is a traitor to humanity and needs to be taken down a couple pegs so that others don’t feel so sinful in comparison.

I speak, to my chagrin, more as one who has taken a few shots than one who got them.

  20. Tebow’s going to kill the West Coast offense. Just watch. We’ll be back to watching the Lombardi Sweep. All good, in my opinion, look what happens when you lose a QB in a WC offense.

He’s underestimated, that’s always a good place to be.

(especially if you have a defense that can pull your ass out of the fire)

  21. Jeff G. says:

Correction: longest TD run by by a lefthanded NFL QB and former Heisman winner who has opened a hospital in the Pacific rim and who has appeared in a Focus on the Family ad aired during the SuperBowl, to win a game with under a minute to go.

  22. B. Moe says:

The Tebow hate by ESPN is almost as amusing as their dogged refusal to acknowledge that the Cowboys and Tony Romo suck ass.

  23. LBascom says:

Doesn’t he also hold the record for most rushing yards by a NFL QB and former Heisman winner who has opened a hospital in the Pacific rim and who has appeared in a Focus on the Family ad aired during the SuperBowl, in his first four games?

    Statistics are cool…

  24. LBascom says:

Oh, that should read: appeared in a Focus on the Family ad where he assaulted his own mother that aired during the SuperBowl,…

  25. LBascom says:

Or was that Betty White? I can’t remember.

  26. leigh says:

Plenty of athletes talk about Jesus. I don’t watch football much, but I watch a lot of baseball and players are always making the sign of the cross when the go to bat. I say the haters need to spread the hate around and not heap it all on Tebow.

The Tebow jerseys that have his number and “Jesus” where Tebow’s name is supposed to be are pretty obnoxious, though.

  27. bh says:

Von Miller must be wondering what he needs to do to get some credit.

  28. Jeff G. says:

Von got a national interview after the game. He’s a stud. With Dumervil on the other side, and Bailey and Goodman in the secondary along with Dawkins, the Broncos D is starting to look good. Bunkley was a great pickup at D-Tackle.

  29. bh says:

    Yeah, I agree, Jeff.

  30. sdferr says:

It’s fun to think of Tim as a giant, better version of Billy Kilmer, less the profanity and alcoholism.

  31. Blake says:

Everyone of Tebow’s critics are okay with individuality providing said individuality falls within acceptable parameters.

How dare Tebow be such a renegade and toss all the individual stereotypes out the window.

  32. dicentra says:

I watch a lot of baseball and players are always making the sign of the cross when the go to bat.

They prolly still go out and party hearty with their teammates and conquer their share of wimmens and don’t quote actual scripture or come out against abortion and stuff.

In other words, the only ones who get persecuted for talking about Jesus are the ones who mean it.

  33. leigh says:

Or maybe it’s because he talks about it all of time like no one else is familiar with this Jesus guy. Sort of Pharasee type behavior, the way I was brought up.

  34. serr8d says:

The sport needs the Tebow. What with all the mess at Penn State, after the NFL’s summer lockout of greed…hell, even Peyton Manning’s not playing right now. Tebow is a ‘point of light’. Hopefully, though, not a supernova that collapses into a pinhead.

  35. Pablo says:

Or maybe it’s because he talks about it all of time like no one else is familiar with this Jesus guy.

Maybe he gets that impression from the company he keeps.

  36. bh says:

I’m going to link this on the outside chance that maybe one of you hasn’t see it before.

  37. sdferr says:

    Overlap, not interlock, I see.

  38. serr8d says:

Something’s…odd…about that photo, bh. Look below the purple shirt, at the trunk. It’s been modified, no?

  39. Darleen says:

The Tebow jerseys that have his number and “Jesus” where Tebow’s name is supposed to be are pretty obnoxious, though.

I’d trade you a a couple dozen Jesus fans for Raiders’ gangbangers.

  40. Darleen says:

maybe it’s because he talks about it all of time

Honest question — does he really talk about it all the time or is he asked about it all the time?

It’s like “journalists” that have abortion on the brain when grilling conservatives .. and then people say “why don’t those godbothering conservatives STFU about abortion?”

  41. Blake says:

    Darlene,

If you go to the replay of the final touchdown that Slart linked to, there is a link to the post game interview. The interviewer asked Tebow (if memory serves) what comes over him during the last 5 minutes of a game. Tebow very quickly said “First off, I’d like to thank my Lord and savior..” and went on from there.

It’s very brief statement of credit to God and Tebow doesn’t seem to keep harping on the subject.

When I heard Tebow’s statement, I was impressed by the fact that Tebow kept the remarks about faith brief and immediately started talking about his teammates.

I’m sure those who don’t want to hear about God, this counts as “talking about God all the time” whereas I thought it was great the way Tebow mentioned God and then moved on. Tebow certainly didn’t come across as excessively preachy. Of course, the link only showed 20 seconds of the interview so it’s a subjective opinion on my part.

  42. bh says:

Something’s…odd…about that photo, bh. Look below the purple shirt, at the trunk. It’s been modified, no?

I really have a terrible eye for that sort of thing, Serr8d. There could be an alien in the background and I wouldn’t catch it.

  43. leigh says:

I’d trade you a a couple dozen Jesus fans for Raiders’ gangbangers.

Are they fans of Jesus or fans of Tebow’s who are equating him with Him? It’s creepy and profane, in my opinion. I know it’s not the same thing, but there were PSU fans on their knees praying on the sidewalk in front of JoePa’s house last Saturday. Are they praying for JoePa? Or PSU? Why are they doing it in front of his house? It smacks of idolitry.

Like my wisecracking friends in Philly used to say, “Hail Mary, full of grace. Why aren’t the Eagles in first place?”
