Death by a thousand paper cuts

Looks like a bedrock principle of the American Bill of Rights is fixin’ to get the bureaucratic treatment, where freedom is allowed provided it’s wrapped in the kind of red tape that, over time, becomes a strangle hold. And just in time for election season, too!

Which is probably just a coincidence.

We’re getting killed by regulators, whether we know about it, or not.

    Irony alert

In a chilling appraisal of President Obama’s Republican opposition, First Lady Michelle Obama Thursday suggested a Republican victory in the 2012 presidential election would result in curbs on freedom of speech and religion.

Speaking at a fundraiser at a private residence in Tampa, Mrs. Obama noted the power of the president to appoint members of the Supreme Court. She clearly indicated that a Republican would select justices who would attack basic First Amendment rights, saying, “that’s what’s at stake” in the election.

    From the White House transcript:

Let’s not forget about what it meant when my husband appointed those two brilliant Supreme Court justices — (applause) — and for the first time in history, our daughters — and our sons — watched three women take their seats on our nation’s highest court. (Applause.) But more importantly, let’s not forget the impact those decisions will have on our lives for decades to come — on our privacy and security, on whether we can speak freely, worship openly, and love whomever we choose. That is what’s at stake here. (Applause.)

I dvr Red Eye and have noticed an anti-podal “crawl” across the screen alerting viewers to a forthcoming “test” has appeared every night since about four days ago. Don’t know if it’s related, but it seemed to be. (I just went and fast-forwarded through last night’s episode and found the crawl wasn’t there, so I can’t quote it back, sadly.)

I’d counter that we could flood the FCC with complaints about the leftward bias of our mainstream news broadcasters, but we all know damn well that they’d throw out our complaints without a single hearing.

Everyone knows that MSNBC is fair and accurate. No need to make a big production out of proving it.

It’s not that progressives gave up trying to censor free speech when they dropped their push for “Fairness”, it’s that they’re using more underhanded tactics to do so. Tactics like “localism”

Well, I’ll just dial up the AM talk radio station in Philly and see what Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity have to say about all this… oh, right, they’re no longer being aired, in favor of local hosts.

I suppose I should be happy that they still air Limbaugh. I suppose “Localism” is all well and good, but they’ve got to have one show that people listen to – and will advertise on.

Hmmm, sounds like a juicy opening for one or the other of the Beck and Hannity dropper’s competitors John, no?

Barry and Michelle and their enablers ought to be life members of the A/V Club, they’re so practiced at projecting.

  8. John Bradley says:

Y’d think so. But there’s only two talk stations in the area; the other, much-smaller one continues to air 3rd tier hosts (e.g. Michael Medved). Maybe they can’t afford the Hannity and Beck bucks, or maybe they just don’t want to break the contracts with whatever they’re currently airing, but either way it hasn’t happened.

Same deal in NYC, if I’m not mistaken.

John, you can get all that here.

There’s an AM side(Limbaugh 9-12pst, Hannity 2-5pst), and an FM side(Beck 6-9pst, and Levin 3-6pst) They are arraigned to have the most live air time possible for each show, so you have a better chance to call in.

I hardly use the radio anymore.

I remember a story in Analog years ago in which the author proposed that all those bothersome regulations build up until people get sick enough of them to out right rebel, at which point the regulations get revoked. I think it’s time we started rebelling against certain regulations.

  12. Pellegri says:

@2: The political left legislates out of “fairness”, the right out of a sense of moral propriety.

Only one of these is actually prone to going off the deep end completely, and it’s not the one they think.
