AP: "Senate Republicans likely to kill Obama jobs bill"

Seems that, like the President they’ve spent years fluffing and insulating from the criticism he so richly deserves, the AP is confused about just who has the majority in the Senate. For Obama’s “jobs” bill to be defeated, several Democrats are going to have to jump ship.

And it seems likely that no amount of phony polling or manufactured populism or last-ditch efforts at face-saving by Harry Reid are going to convince those heretics to vote for what former chairman and CEO of American Express, Harvey Golub, suggests “reveals a depth of [economic] cluelessness that boggles the mind.”

Meaning a few key Democrats — and not Republicans — will be responsible for “killing” the President’s Jobs Bill in the Senate. This despite the fact that it has no chance of ever passing the House.

Not even with that kind of cover will Democrats facing tough re-election challenges in 2012 vote for what amounts to a collection of ill-conceived tax hikes and sops to Obama’s fundraising base.

That the AP and the rest of the left-wing media want to lay this at the feet of the GOP is hardly surprising. But were I the GOP, I wouldn’t much worry about the spin: Obama can still try to campaign on the narrative that Republicans killed his “jobs” bill; but I’m pretty sure the American people, having been burned already by ineffectual stimulus plans, aren’t going to be too torn up over having their taxes raised — no matter how much some of them want to see Obama stick it to “the rich.”

Heh, I enjoyed the nearby headline at The Hill: “White House adviser: ‘Overwhelming’ Dem support for jobs bill“, under which Gene Sperling claims his silly claims without even remotely suggesting the piece of shit will pass. It’s getting to the funny-stupid stage. Shame’s got nothing to do with it. Even the optics don’t count for counting. Whatev’s issue from the White House from Dawn to Dusk.

Isn’t “kill” a violence-laden, uncivil term to use? The AP is making me feel oppressed.

So, how do you kill a dead parrot?

Restore! Comity! By blowing it up!

I swear, one couldn’t make this shit up to be as bizarre as the simple facts fall out.

This Congress was elected to stop Obama — they’re just doing their job!

These media headlines should be a point of pride [unless you’re a spineless RINO].

Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) did not vote, as he is currently recovering from surgery for early-stage prostate cancer. The remaining 46 Republicans voted no, along with Sens. Ben Nelson (D., Neb.) and Jon Tester (D., Mont.), who called the president’s plan “an expensive, temporary fix to a problem that needs a big, long-term solution.” Both senators are facing difficult reelections in 2012.

The presumed final vote count of 51-48 is misleading, however, as a number Democratic (or Democrat-aligned) Senators, such as Joe Lieberman (I., Ct.), Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) and Jim Webb (D., Va.), voted for cloture despite their overriding opposition to the president’s plan. All three said they would not have supported final passage of the bill in its current form.

So they held the cloture vote on S. 1660, Reid’s version of Obama’s bill (S. 1549) needing 60 ayes and splat, 50-48, with the vote being held open for the arrival of Sen Shaheen coming back to DC from New Hampshire so the Democrats can say they got a majority of 51. Obama’s own bill won’t be voted on, unless McConnell manages another shifty maneuver to force it.
