Nannystate Republicans

Yet another reason why I don’t care one bit what letter a politician wears at the end of his or her name: a statist is a statist, regardless of whether or not s/he wants lower taxes.

Case in point, “Michigan Fights Childhood Obesity by Tracking It”:

In an attempt to combat Michigan’s childhood obesity epidemic, Gov. Rick Snyder announced today that the state would begin tracking kids’ body mass index through the Michigan Care Improvement Registry. Although the policy would be one of the most extensive government anti-childhood obesity efforts, pediatricians were divided over whether it would have the desired impact.

The tracking system would encourage pediatricians to calculate patients’ BMI using height and weight measurements, and report these numbers to the state through the existing immunization tracking system, the Michigan Care Improvement Registry. The numbers would be reported anonymously, meaning that the child’s identity would not be connected to his or her BMI in state records.

The hope is that having doctors track height and weight in this way would encourage more discussion among parents, kids and doctors about the dangers of being overweight, says Geralyn Lasher, director of communications at the Executive Office of the Governor.

Because clearly, doctors can’t do that with their patients without first passing data on to the government. And of course, the government, armed with such data, is unlikely to marshal that data in support of some new government program aimed at portion sizes, or types of food available — or, more probably, as justification for sin taxes on soda or candy or cakes or pizza, growing the revenue base for the government under the pretense of public safety.

Leaving aside the junk science behind BMI, the idea here is that a government / healthcare orthodoxy should put itself in position to dictate to doctors the kinds of things they need to preach to their patients — which, when coupled with government’s move into health care, opens up all sort of opportunity for cronyism on the one hand, and punishment of alternative treatment plans that fall outside the purview of those plans developed by preferred experts working hand in hand with the government.

And for what?

This is not only bad medicine, but it’s bad government, to boot. That a Republican is spearheading this makes it all the more disheartening — though hardly surprising.

My BMI in high school indicated that I was pretty “overweight,” and I could have run ten miles, beaten the governor of Michigan to death and then swam ten miles. All before going to football practice.

  3. JD says:

That BMI is BS. It says I am overweight, at 6’3″ 205 lbs.

Not many overweight people can run a half marathon, or complete 8 triathlons (5 sprint, 2 olympic, and 1 half ironman).

Does Rick Perry own a cell phone?

If so, does he have his own scientific theory on how it works?

I ate those all the time as a kid, sans the raisins. You were obviously on the feminine side for a Texas youth so you’re forgiven for not knowing this, but peanut butter helps build muscle, which weighs more than fat.

As mentioned earlier, meats and dairy products rank the highest on the BV scale since they are complete proteins. Here is a list of the foods which rank the highest on the BV chart, and therefore have the highest bioavailability of all proteins:

    1) Whey Protein (BV 100+)

    2) Eggs (BV 100)

    3) Dairy, meat, fish, poultry (BV 70 – 100)

Grains, nuts, seed and vegetables are not on this list. Since they are incomplete proteins, they have a BV of under 70. This means that the body cannot use them as efficiently as the foods with a higher BV rating.

President Obama has his sights set on raising $1 billion for his reelection campaign. Raising that money won’t be easy. But if you can hand out other people’s money to friends, it must get a whole lot easier. This crony capitalism and government waste is at the heart of our economic problems. It will destroy us if we don’t root it out. It’s not just a Democrat problem or a Republican problem. It’s a problem of our permanent political class. This won’t stop until “we the people” say enough is enough, and we retire the permanent political class that votes for this.

Particularly when you can give out $535m of other people’s money and get back substantially less. He shoulda cut out the middle mad and just cut a check from the treasury for himself – anything less than a 1:1 ROI for the $535m is idiocity. Obama goes to the Solyndra Pawn Shop and gets taken to the cleaners.

Snyder was the best we could do, though by far not my first choice. The small gov primary candidate finished near the bottom. His dem opponent was a Micheal Moore wannabe and his dem predecessor presided over the worst economy in the nation. Which BTW, she is selling a book about creating jobs now. I threw up a little when I saw that.

  26. iron308 says:

One thing in Snyder’s favor, the dems, unions, lefties, etc, are trying to recall him.

  27. Carin says:

Synder was never a social conservative. That’s why he wasn’t my first choice. I knew he’d pull bullshit like this. He’s as conservative as we could get at the time, and yet liberals are still trying to recall him.

I know OUTLAW and all that, but right now, in Michigan, things economically suck so fucking bad, I’ll take the fiscal conservative if that’s all I can get. We can’t lay off any more employees. We can’t lose any more money in our house. We can’t move out of state unless one of you fine folks want to put us up in your garage.

    We’re bailing the boat.

  28. Carin says:

And, believe me there is pushback in the state to this. I don’t know if it will be successful, but people are bitching from the left and right.

They were talking (to Synder) on the radio and talking about how great it is that they’ve gotten the sugary snacks out of the school, I just though – I probably ate a sugary snack every day at school. I was also the captain of the track team, a cheerleader, and the top gymnast for floor routine for our high school.

My kids eat too much junk, but everyone of them is in good shape. It’s not the snacks, it’s the stupid we’re fighting.

  30. Slartibartfast says:

My BMI has recently dropped to 26.5 from 28. 3 or 4 years ago I was at the low end of obese.

If I get my weight all the way back to where it was in college, I will still be a shade on the overweight side. Back then I could bench 250 and regularly swam 4 miles a day.

Now I struggle with 3 sets of 40 pushups and 3 sets of 10 chinups. Sets of 11, actually, but that last one is ten times as hard as the one before it, so I don’t like to get too accurate. It’s been a long while since I swam for fitness. And I might be hard-pushed to run 2.5 miles under a nine-minute pace, because frankly I’ve taken this Florida summer off of running. But for a 50-year-old guy, I do all right, and my core is in better condition than it has been at any other point in my life.

Tell you what, though: give me and the genius whose bright idea this was a heavy bag, and we’ll see who can deliver the most kicks to it in a span of a couple of minutes, without dropping dead afterward. Or, alternatively, we can just spar each other. I think I might enjoy that.
