Ouch:

So there we have it: a large, amoral, brutalised sub-culture of young British people who lack education because they have no will to learn, and skills which might make them employable. They are too idle to accept work waitressing or doing domestic labour, which is why almost all such jobs are filled by immigrants.

They have no code of values to dissuade them from behaving anti-socially or, indeed, criminally, and small chance of being punished if they do so.

They have no sense of responsibility for themselves, far less towards others, and look to no future beyond the next meal, sexual encounter or TV football game.

They are an absolute deadweight upon society, because they contribute nothing yet cost the taxpayer billions. Liberal opinion holds they are victims, because society has failed to provide them with opportunities to develop their potential.

Most of us would say this is nonsense. Rather, they are victims of a perverted social ethos, which elevates personal freedom to an absolute, and denies the underclass the discipline — tough love — which alone might enable some of its members to escape from the swamp of dependency in which they live.

Only education — together with politicians, judges, policemen and teachers with the courage to force feral humans to obey rules the rest of us have accepted all our lives — can provide a way forward and a way out for these people.

They are products of a culture which gives them so much unconditionally that they are let off learning how to become human beings. My dogs are better behaved and subscribe to a higher code of values than the young rioters of Tottenham, Hackney, Clapham and Birmingham.

Unless or until those who run Britain introduce incentives for decency and impose penalties for bestiality which are today entirely lacking, there will never be a shortage of young rioters and looters such as those of the past four nights, for whom their monstrous excesses were ‘a great fire, man’.

Products of the long march.

Europe wants to walk it back, and the riots are in part a product of that desperation. Too many in the US, alternately, seems to think this way lies Utopia — and our government is more than happy to join them in their fantasies by continually kicking the can down the road, pretending that necessary reforms can always be put off indefinitely.

Worse still? The people in the US haven’t had their guns taken way just yet…

This is just the logical end result of most liberal politics.
Since the 1960s, the liberals in the UK, and the democrats in the US have been preaching about their version of “fairness”.
    – They have repeatedly told their supporters that those with money must have gotten it unfairly, and that it is ‘social justice’ to take wealth from those that have it, and redistribute it to those that don’t.
    – They have asked their supporters to form mobs to intimidate politicians, judges, CEOs, and other representatives of the upper reaches of society.
    – They have repeatedly enjoined their supporters to roam in the streets, chanting “No justice, no peace!”.
    – They have repeatedly made clear to their supporters that they will be rewarded for sloth, and punished (loss of benefits) for working.
    – They have repeatedly instructed their supporters that those with money are evil, and the poor are inherently good.
    – They have repeatedly told their supporters that criminal action must be understood, and that prison is for rehabilitation, not punishment.
    – They have repeatedly worked to undermine moral values, while at the same time underfunding their military and police infrastructure.

Now that the liberals are running out of other peoples’ money to hand over to the societal leeches, the leeches have discovered that not only does the emperor have no clothes, he is also poorly armed.

The looters are merely cutting out the now impotent middleman, and taking from those that contribute to society directly, instead of relying on the liberal politician to give them the cover of ‘compassion’ while doing much the same via less violent means.

So, will Britain wake up to the reality that 40 years of progressive culture have led them here and reassert their historical values, or is this end of Britain (and one more domino in the collapse of Western culture in general)? That’s because the USSR brand of socialism was the “bad father” type: keep the proles in line through fear of punishment.

The Euro-socialist model is the “bad mother”: keep the proles in line by fostering dependency on Big Mother, who doesn’t let her babies grow into adulthood.

    Will. Never. Happen.

If they were ever foolish enough to try, the current “simmering” of frustrated Americans would immediately go to a full boil over. There are a hell of a lot more gun owning private citizen in the US than there are police and military combined… never mind the fact that I suspect a substantial percentage of the police and military would balk at any order to confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens.

There is far too much of this “they’re unemployed and disenfranchised” stuff going around.

They’re not going to take our guns away, Dave. They’re going to attempt to persuade us to surrender them because guns are scary baahahd, m’kay? They’re a health risk to children and other living things and should only be entrusted to trained government certified professionals state agents.

  24. Silver Whistle says:

So, will Britain wake up to the reality that 40 years of progressive culture have led them here and reassert their historical values, or is this end of Britain (and one more domino in the collapse of Western culture in general)?

Scooter, that ship sailed when Maggie left office. You’re just seeing galvanism in the corpse.

  25. cranky-d says:

If we keep moving down the path we’re on, guns will eventually be taken away. They will do it piecemeal. First they’ll take away the “assault rifles” which are not assault rifles at all. Then they will take away all semi-automatics because “you don’t need one for hunting.” They will probably follow that with a ban on anything that is not a single-shot rifle or shotgun. At that point they can get to banning those as well.

Handguns will follow a similar path. They will first limit the number of rounds it can hold (as many states already do), but this time they will bring in the idea that if the gun was even designed to hold more, it will be illegal, even if it’s provided with a magazine limiting the rounds. Then they will make that limit lower (6 or so) which will effectively outlaw auto-loading pistols. Once it’s all revolvers they will take those too.

The thing is, it will happen because people will not resist at first. Once the state has taken away some guns, it makes it much easier to take away the rest. Those who do resist, and who probably will end up dead, will be vilified by the press to make an example of them. Everyone else will meekly submit.

  26. Silver Whistle says:

Dave, did you not notice the headline:

  30. Dave in SoCal says:

That “If” should be a big clue.

Baby steps, I guess. At least someone is bringing up the subject. Whether or not anyone runs with it will have to be seen over the coming days and weeks. A few more nights of DroogFest 2011 will help with that.

  31. dicentra says:

At that point they can get to banning those as well.

The way things are going these days, I don’t reckon the gun-owning segment of U.S. society is much in the mood to meekly obey any duly-passed laws that are so transparently aimed at rendering us helpless.

Increasingly, people in large numbers are going to tell Washington to get stuffed, and Washington won’t be able to do a damn thing about it.

If it does come to that, I’d like to comply, peaceful law-abiding citizen that I am, but you know, I just have this feeling that before it comes to that, I’m going to have to sell my (strictly theoretical) guns to raise some eating money, what with the economy and the times being what they are.

  36. sdferr says:

The people hold a card they don’t speak of very often, though I think they do know it is there. Tax revenue continues to pour in to the Treasury every month, tax revenue which in the final analysis is voluntarily submitted.

But it may only be a Ralph Cramden “. . . to the moon, Alice” sort of thought.

  37. Joe says:

When can we expect a new Sex Pistols and Clash to rise from these ashes? Because music out of England mostly sucks lately.

  38. cranky-d says:

Yeah, Squid, I’m not talking about a collapse situation, but one in which the government continues to have power. In a collapse, no one will be taking away guns except by deadly force.

The big question will be how to know when it’s time to move out of the city. Everything you leave behind will be stolen or destroyed, and that can provide a powerful incentive to stay too long.

  39. Silver Whistle says:

    Mostly, Joe. Not all.

  40. bh says:

I wonder if the British couldn’t attempt incrementalism the opposite of what they try here.

Get more and more people shotgun licenses for hunting or sport shooting. Then pass a law explicitly saying that one can defend property with it.

You don’t really need 100% of the people armed to make the criminals think twice. I’d think that even 20% could make a significant difference.

  41. “…many were gainfully employed. This is seen as a good night out and a chance to blag some free stuff. There is far too much of this ‘they’re unemployed and disenfranchised’ stuff going around.”

Indeed. We’ve heard plenty of the usual blather about “deprivation” and “social exclusion,” but what we’ve seen over the last four days is as much about attitude and presumed entitlement as any social circumstance. Which is why many of those who’ve been arrested – including a teacher and a youth social worker – are in no meaningful sense “deprived” or “excluded,” just arrogant, nihilistic or leftwing.

As Brian Micklethwaite noted here, with riots there are usually any number of factors – or excuses – to consider. High among them, though, is the fact that rioting, mugging and looting are exciting and can result in free stuff. The penalties for rioting are also fairly small and usually non-existent – relatively few of the rioters are likely to be caught, let alone sentenced. It’s a notoriously difficult crime to prosecute. And as Brian points out, rioters tend not to regard rioting as wrong. This self-justifying narcissism is rather important, yet overlooked – or studiously ignored – by many leftist commentators. Rioters generally feel entitled. As these two looting girls put it: “Good fun, free alcohol… We’re showing the police we can do what we want.”

  42. bh says:

It isn’t just the lack of guns, it is the lack of the guts to actually use them.

  46. happyfeet says:

I heard my foals on misfits the other day

  47. Mikey NTH says:

Oh – there is one upside to this. These rioters would have no problem burning down the homes of the British Noam Chomskys and knocking downand stealing the stuff of the British Frances Pivens. The Frankenstein Effect is still with us, thank God.

  48. Silver Whistle says:

Excellent piece, David, as usual. Red Penny is characteristically clueless: “Months of conjecture will follow these riots. Already, the internet is teeming with racist vitriol and wild speculation. The truth is that very few people know why this is happening.” Dear, deluded Laurie, the entire country is positively certain why this is happening.

  49. bh says:

It isn’t just the lack of guns, it is the lack of the guts to actually use them.

I don’t know that this is true, Mikey. Standing unarmed to protect property seems fairly gutsy to me. That’s been happening.

  50. bh says:

I wonder if this influences peoples’ decision-making process when it comes to self-defense. Maybe SW or David has a feel for it.

Reading the coverage here, I’m frankly shocked to hear this concern about “vigilantism” in the press. Vigilantism is when you gather up a posse and hang someone without a trial. Standing in front of your business with a bat when there are roving mobs about seems much more like common sense.

  51. bh says:

    Oh, missed the link. Here.

  52. Jeff G. says:

When it happens here — and we’re heading that way — it’s going to be a bloodbath.

  53. Silver Whistle says:

You don’t really need 100% of the people armed to make the criminals think twice. I’d think that even 20% could make a significant difference.

bh, the most recently available data suggest that we’re hovering around 3.3 guns per 100,000 people. There’s a long way to go to get up to 20%, considering the pain in the arse it is to get a license.

  54. bh says:

Speaking of bloodbath: the closing action on the Dow today.

  55. bh,

Turkish shopkeepers defended their property and neighbours against the rioters. Similar groups have been reported elsewhere, generally among immigrant communities, and the phrase “going Turkish” may well catch on. Outside the BBC/Guardian axis of hand-wringing, the public response that I’ve heard has been very supportive. Enthusiastic, even.

  56. Silver Whistle says:

The Tony Martin case is a terrible one to make a case for either side, bh.

  57. bh says:

    Wow, SW.

My guess would have been about 1000x that. Wow.

Just would have estimated many, many more WWII rifles, country folk with shotguns and the like.

    Have I said “Wow” yet?

  58. Silver Whistle says:

    Going Turkish, David?

  59. cranky-d says:

I believe all those guns were taken away, bh, long ago.

  60. Silver Whistle says:

Of course my own collection skews those data, bh. The actual guns per 100,000 is much less if you take mine out of the total.

  61. bh says:

Understood, SW, I’ve heard it referenced a couple times but (embarrassingly) only now looked at the details of the Martin case.

That’s good to hear, David. “Going Turkish”, I like it.

  62. cranky-d says:

How do you manage that, SW? Are the regulations merely onerous or nigh-near insurmountable?

  63. bh says:

If you take those numbers, I wonder if there aren’t actually more of these in Wisconsin than in the entire UK.

    That’s just bizarre.

  64. Silver Whistle says:

Onerous for shotguns, a complete pain in the arse for firearms, cranky. References from JP, MD or similar, approved ground to shoot on, single rifle per calibre, inspection of premises and storage by police, notification of family doctor, registration of serial nos., restriction on ammo bought and held (typically 100 bought, 250 held), notification in writing to chief constable when weapon is transferred, etc.

  65. SW,

The Guild of Evil is always going Turkish. Here’s a scene from our latest, rather spirited, annual general meeting.

  66. Ernst Schreiber says:

You Brits shoulda put your ancient liberties into writing so’s they couldn’t be defined away.

    Oh wait.

  67. Silver Whistle says:

So, David, no one cheats at whist in the Guild? Does one wait for an invite?

  68. Jim in KC says:

Holy crap, SW. I have well more than 250 rounds of a number of different calibers in more than one room in the house…

  69. happyfeet says:

if it happened here who are we supposed to root for exactly

  70. Squid says:

    …generally among immigrant communities…

That last word seems operative, to me. Where we have communities that identify as communities, they stand together. Where we have neighbo(u)rhoods where the neighbo(u)rs don’t know each other, we don’t see such solidarity.

At least, not until the next morning, when they show up with buckets and brushes and beg the Council to please please please allow them to pick up the mess, if it isn’t too much fuss, guvnah. To the extent that these morning-after brigades solidify community ties, I think they’re all to the good. Unfortunately, the vibe I’ve gotten so far is that they’re just another Facebook phenomenon, destined to make some shallow people feel better and then go back to the bad old ways.

In the end, we really need to see ordinary people standing up and saying “I’m not coming up to your flat to bust your head open, but if I see you holding a brick near my shop, my house, or my car, you can rest assured that you’ll become an NHS statistic that very moment.”

  71. Squid says:

Everything you leave behind will be stolen or destroyed, and that can provide a powerful incentive to stay too long.

I prefer to think of it as exchanging my crummy little house in the city for a lovely lake home in rural Wisconsin. Shame about those folks who used to live there, but that’s no reason to let the place go empty, is it?

  72. Silver Whistle says:

Jim, when I first applied for a UK firearms certificate, the form asked how many rounds of 30-30 and .22 I wanted to keep. Not wishing to appear timorous and being generally unhappy with restrictions, I put down 10,000 for each. I received a phone call from police headquarters shortly thereafter.

  73. Silver Whistle says:

The wiki is actually useful in cataloguing our misery.

  74. Squid says:

    di,

I think that’s what the Brits think of when they think of us. The disconnect comes because you and I look at that motley bunch and think “I’m glad these boys have my back,” while our cousins across the pond think “Dear Lord, how frightfully distasteful!”

  75. bh says:

That last word seems operative, to me. Where we have communities that identify as communities, they stand together. Where we have neighbo(u)rhoods where the neighbo(u)rs don’t know each other, we don’t see such solidarity.

That’s definitely true. I assume the higher percentage of family-owned businesses probably factors in as well.

  76. cranky-d says:

10,000 rounds per calibre is a good, solid number, SW. Before I sold all my guns and ammo for cash to a guy down the street who moved away a while ago, I had yet to meet that goal.

  77. Jim in KC says:

Ha! 10,000 rounds of .22 seems fairly reasonable, small and cheap as it is. Most of what I have larger inventories of is handgun calibers.

Looking at that wiki page, I think I own one gun that might be legal in the UK. Maybe three if pellet guns are ok.

  78. cranky-d says:

I’m lucky in that I have a farm I can go to, Squid. It’s my best friend’s family home, just 600 acres so it’s pretty much a hobby farm (currently rented to the son-in-law who farms a total of around 10K acres), but one could do a lot worse. I keep telling him if things go to hell we’re making our own whiskey.

  79. cranky-d says:

The acreage is rented, not the house. Not that it matters, really.

  80. “No one cheats at whist in the Guild?”

Manners in whist are a must. Any whiff of impropriety and the Guild’s mascot is unleashed.

    Right, off to bed.

  82. Silver Whistle says:

Pellet guns OK? Only if they don’t exceed 12 ft/lbs. And don’t think of getting one for your kid, you animal.

  83. cranky-d says:

  85. happyfeet says:

oh and check out the presidential seals on W’s boots

hah he’s too cool for school

  86. Jim in KC says:

Damn, I guess I’m out of luck on at least one of them, then.

Looking at a bit more of that wiki page, man, I thought the US had some stupid and useless firearms laws, but we’re a nirvana compared to the UK.

  87. Squid says:

I’m lucky in that I have a farm I can go to, Squid.

It’s ironic, in a way, that after years of scoffing at the windmill dreamers, I’m going to be depending on such technology to grind grain and get water out of the ground. Unfortunately, the only millers left in WI come in twelve-packs.

  88. Silver Whistle says:

There are some real head scratchers, Jim, that don’t show on the wiki. Let’s say you hand load, and have 250 rounds of expanding .308 on your license. You can order as many FMJ bullets to load as you want, and they won’t go on your license. I guess ball ammo doesn’t hurt, or something.

You also do not need a license to buy smokeless powder to reload, but need a separate one for black powder. Muzzle loading (cap and ball) pistols are allowed; there is a chap who will take your stainless New Model Army replica .44, make a stainless cylinder that takes shotgun primers, smokeless powder and .44 wadcutters, and you’re good to go.

This country is mad as a hat stand.

You can get a lot further with a kind word and a two-by-four than with a kind word alone.

But you can get way farther still with a 1911 and you can save the kind words until you’re standing over their bleeding carcass.

#20, et al – I won’t be party to any unlawful orders. Gun grabbing, ala N.O. Police during Katrina is just that. If anyone tried to get the Illinois Guard to do that, they would fail – this is an organization that has trouble getting enough officers and NCOs to make December assemblies during deer hunting season… Certain police departments might pitch in (I’m looking at you Chicago PD) but my county would probably take a pass, thanks very much.

What is with ordering baseball bats?

    Ian Faith would be heartbroken.

  96. Stephanie says:

Hopefully, Easton has found a new found use for those now illegal composite metal bats that the colleges and a lot of high schools outlawed this year. Lighter, larger and more lethal… what’s not to love?

Maybe we could start a drive to send metal bats to the UK similar to the program in #97. For the children – so as to get the evil too efficient bats out of America’s y’ut’s hands.

“The looting was done, not just because they can’t afford the stuff, it was done to show they just don’t give a shit . . . . We’re here and not going away,” Michelle said.

Politicians have given several interviews since the riots began, blaming the rioters for wrecking their own communities.

Some in Hackney do not see it that way.

“It’s like the old days. It’s bringing the community spirit back. Even though it’s a sad way to do it, it’s bringing the community together,” Ariom said.

As the sun set, the men at the estate said they would hang out on a typical evening, play football or visit girlfriends.

“But if the riots kick off again, I’m going. It’s history, it’s a revolution,” Ariom said.

“I loved Hackney during the riot. I loved every minute of it. It was great to see the people coming together to show the authorities that they cannot just come out here bullying.”

Imagine the following were true, and your goal was to produce the best golfers possible.

I don’t think it would happen.

President BHO has recently appointed a Golf Czar and major rule changes in the game of golf will become effective in June 2011. This is only a preview as the complete rule book (expect 2000 pages) is being rewritten as we speak.
Here are a few of the changes.

    Golfers with handicaps:
    – below 10 will have their green fees increased by 35%.
    – between 11 and 18 will see no increase in green fees.
    – above 18 will get a $20 check each time they play.

The term “gimmie” will be changed to “entitlement” and will be used as follows:
    – handicaps below 10, no entitlements.
    – handicaps from 11 to 17, entitlements for putter length putts.
    – handicaps above 18, if your ball is on green, no need to putt, just pick it up.

These entitlements are intended to bring about fairness and, most importantly, equality in scoring. In addition, a Player will be limited to a maximum of one birdie or six pars in any given 18-hole round. Any excess must be given to those fellow players who have not yet scored a birdie or par. Only after all players have received a birdie or par from the player actually making the birdie or par, can that player begin to count his pars and birdies again. The current USGA handicap system will be used for the above purposes, but the term “net score” will be available only for scoring those players with handicaps of 18 and above.

This is intended to “re-distribute” the success of winning by making sure that in every competition, the above 18 handicap players will post only “net score” against every other player’s “gross score”. These new Rules are intended to CHANGE the game of golf.

Golf must be about Fairness. It should have nothing to do with ability, hard work, practice, and responsibility. This is the “Right” thing to do.

The chick to the left – Amanda Hearst – is really freaking hot.

Her stepfather is novelist Jay McInerney the internet says.

  103. Abe Froman says:

Well she is a Hearst, after all. It’s an incestuous little fame and money world, New York society is. One of these peoples, a friend of mine from college, recently bought WFB’s NYC mansion-like object with her hubby and a part of me kind of gagged. I mean, you’re always aware that you live on a different planet than these people, but must one of them acquire the home of a deity?

  104. happyfeet says:

that’s kooky but like my dad said everyone has to have somewhere to live

    dated, stupid, old

  111. SDN says:

cranky, they can try to restrict new gun stuff, but there’s so much of the old stuff in circulation that the only way to effectively get rid of it would be door-to-door confiscation… and that’s when the shooting starts. There’s no shortage of high-capacity mags at casa SDN, for example.

  112. Richard Cranium says:

@111 Yeah. People were quoting songs from WWI during the ’60s too.

Are you really this much of a tool?

Unless I’m mistaken, the sender’s ID is part of the message. Then again, some people think that you really do have to be on the line for a certain amount of time before the police can trace the call.

Gee, I wonder how the voice packets manage to find their way from one device to the other. Must be magic or something.

  115. cranky-d says:

SDN, before I sold all my guns and ammo to that guy down the street, I had a good supply of hi-cap magazines.

I would expect door-to-door confiscation under new gun laws, because when they tried to outlaw the Saiga 7.62×39 (I believe it was that one) in CA a few years ago, turn-in compliance was so low that they rescinded the law. That’s probably why almost every new law applies to new purchases. Still, a good gun-grabbing society will eventually have to go door-to-door.
