Jumping the shark

Picture me in bermuda shorts, leather jacket, and biker boots—my hair greased into a shiny, waterproof ducktail, the muscles in my arms and legs taut and sure.

You ready?  And, wheeeeeeee…!

When did the phrase “jump the shark” actually jump the shark?

Why, I believe it just did.

From now on, “jump the shark” will be replaced with “added Ted McGinley to the cast.”

Another one of those dfgsfwtdfrqwfvt posts, and that will signal the motorcycle moving into position to jump the shark on this blog!

You know, I read somewhere else someone claiming that ‘Jump the Shark’ came from Fonzi jumping over a shark tank on his motorcyle. That’s not how I remember it. The sitcom had moved to California(glamorous Hollywood) for a couple(I think) of episodes and Fonzi was somehow dared into jumping over a shark pen on waterskis. As I remember it he was on two skis. Loser. If Fonzi was really that cool he would have done it slalom. He was also wearing his leather jacket, which raised the absurdity to really new heights.

If Fonzi had just jumped a shark tank on his motocycle, it wouldn’t justify the fame that phrase has achieved. Fonzi was well known for riding a motorcycle all through the show, it really wouldn’t be out of character if he jumped a shark tank on one. Absurd of course, but not that much by sitcom standards.

More memories: I believe Ritchie was driving the boat.

Also, was it done as a cliff-hanger episode, with the end of the first Fonzi about to jump over, and the second his triumph? I don’t remember, but it would make sense.

God that was ridiculous. The phrase ‘jump the shark’ could not have a better symbol for the concept it embodies.

  11. Is it possible I’m the only one who reads blogs daily who has no idea of what “jump the shark” means?  Other than contextual clues, that is.
