Question: Is there a sinister and unethical Limbaugh/Heritage cabal? Answer: Is this a joke?

I ask, because it seems like it must be. And yet, clearly, some people are taking it quite seriously.

There are plenty of ways to answer such nonsense — anyone who actually listens to Limbaugh, or Levin, or Beck, etc., knows who the advertisers are, while also recognizing that the advertisers tend to sync up with the show’s messaging — but frankly, I prefer mine: “You’re fucking kidding me, right?”

Go ahead, use it. Repeat as necessary. And never say I’m not a giver.

Honestly. Read through the comment section there to discover just how interested these law types are at practicing sophistry and pressuring a prosecution, while easily and confidently dismissing at least half the population as malinformed, ill-educated dross.

What the hell happened to that place, anyway?

  2. sdferr says:

Though I didn’t know the place when it was otherwise, I’d say at a guess any postulated change is merely due to being in America like all the rest of us. It’s next to impossible to escape the dullards of the progressive victory.

  3. proudvastrightwingconspirator says:

Of course Limbaugh and the rest are shills for pimping for those conservative think tanks.
Because you never hear any plugs for The Center for American Progress or any other prog think tanks on Mike Malloy’s or Randi Rhodes radio shows, or on MSNBC……oh, wait a second…..but, but, but THAT’S DIFFERENT!

  4. SmokeVanThorn says:

Used to be a regular Volokh reader – not any more, but I will go there for certain posts. When I do, I never read the comments. Too may Sorosbots.

  5. Bob Reed says:

    This Politico story suggests

Cute…Politico’s not accusing anyone of being involved in a talk radio version of the 50’s “payola” cabal; they’re just, you know, asking quoestions

    Sound familiar?

Some sponsorship deals also include so-called “embedded ads” in which the sponsors’ initiatives are weaved into the content of the show…

They go out of their way to make this sound nefarious, when, in reality it’s analogous to another throwback advertising technique from the early days of television. Now, full disclosure, I don’t often listen to Limbaugh’s show unless I’m out and about, but anyone who has is familiar with the way that, when near the end of a segment as he wants to segue into an advertising bloc, he’ll personally talk about “life-lock”, “sleep number beds”, or “Carbonite on-line back up”, like he is carrying on a matter-of-fact conversation with the audience.

Kind of like late-night show hosts, back in the day, used to personally talk about how good a certain cigarette was, or how delicious a certain kind of beer.

The Politico writers seem to have forgotten about this strategy, even though it goes on still on the game-shows my mother-in-law watches, and instead are acting like it’s some new, evil, conspiratorial contrivance on the part of the vast right wing consipiracy

What’s heartening, though, about this kind of crazy talk is that it means the lefties are feeling thier moment slipping away…

  6. Darleen says:

Let’s face it, the Left-liberals hate talk radio (and FoxNews) with a passion because it intrudes on their monopoly of information.

I don’t listen to Rush much since he’s opposite Prager, but if Rush is like any of the other hosts, then they DO make clear who their sponsors are, especially when quoting or referring to them.

The gist of what I’m reading in the comment section there is neither Rush nor Heritage are sincere in their principles…they are both “shills” using each other and DON’T dare compare it to Jon Stewart!!!!1!!!

  7. Spiny Norman says:

Dear Gawd!!! Radio hosts endorsing their advertisers!

What has the world come to???

  8. geoffb says:

So if you are considered a “news” organization (hi Politico-CNN-MSNBC-CBS-ABC-NBC} and you shill for the DNC, OFA, CAP, ThinkProgress, Media Matters… with payments concealed as book deals, consultancy, favors/jobs for you/relatives/friends then all is well.

But if you are an entertainer who only endorses sponsors whose products you use and think are good then you are corrupt?

  9. Darleen says:

But if you are an entertainer who only endorses sponsors whose products you use and think are good then you are corrupt?

    Of course you are, because

    1) you don’t really believe what you espouse
    2) your audience is too stupid to be allowed to listen to you

  10. geoffb says:

    Speaking of sponsors

  11. steph says:

I’m glad that, to my knowledge, most of the hosts stopped personally endorsing DirectBuy (better name: DirectBuyerBeware). Those endoresments always made me queasy.

  12. Cicero418 says:

To steal a phrase from Nancy Pelosi, “Are you serious? Are you serious?”

Several former trolls from here are spouting off their nonsense in that Volokh thread.

  15. McGehee says:

OT, but a Washington Times editorial guy found something hilarious about Teh Palin H8. I’d link it directly at TWT but I couldn’t find it there. Also, I’m a blog-whore.

  16. Darleen says:

    JD

Do you have any idea who the heck is that “zuch” ilk is? The ad homs and insults are so over-the-top I would consider it a parody except for the sheer hate that permeates.

  17. JD says:

No clue, Darleen. Beyond parody, to be sure. Jukeboxhero used to play its passive/aggressive BS games here. AJ LAzarus did too. There was at least one other I recognized.

  18. Darleen says:

AJ Laz’s stuff I just skip over, life’s too short.

Some of these people make my teeth itch.

Waaait.. You mean I’ve been donating all this money to the VRWC and their tactics aren’t as new and innovative and evil as they’ve let on? I guess I’ll just ask for a refund!

Mendoucheous twatwafflery seems to be written into their genetic coding.

    OT: related to McGehee’s #15.

    Palin interview on Fox.

In one of the first comments, I find this:

Good lord, you are just discovering this now? The right wing media is a room of mirrors, and it’s really quite obvious. Someone will think up some new policy or even just a new phrase, and suddenly each and every media commentator and right wing politician uses it that week, and they all say exactly the same thing.

Good Lord, the right is using the means and methods that the left has perfected for five decades, only with a much smaller megaphone. Is it any surprise that like-minded folks tend to sound like one another? No, but the surprise that any honest lefty would find if they opened their ears and eyes is that by far, the preponderance of media types echo the very same leftist line. In fact, there is far more examples of active coordination by the left – JournoList anyone – than any found on the right, withstanding any allegation by the left-leaning Politico.

Methinks that many of the left are supremely pissed that they are finally having to fight by their own rules.

  23. David Block says:

Sadly, it is not a joke.

The people pushing this crap? Now THERE is a joke.

  24. Carin says:

    Oh lord. Life’s too short.

The folks over there are scary.

  25. guinsPen says:

    Say, who’s this dope?

    Jonathan H. Adler says:

PersonFromPorlock: I don’t think you can call Limbaugh’s on-air mentions of the Heritage Foundation ‘seamless’: they’re so obvious they clank.

I’ll take your word for it. I rarely hear the show, so I wouldn’t know.

    JHA (Quote)

    Oh, the post’s author.

  26. Mike says:

    “…but frankly, I prefer mine…”

“Eat shit and die” works pretty well for me. But yours is good, too, as a prelude to launching the stream of smoking-hot profanity at ’em.

  27. Mike says:

Oh, and I really like JD’s “mendoucheous twatwaffelry” as well. Gonna have to remember that one.

  28. […] Heritage Foundation being one of several sponsors on Rush Limbaugh’s show (pithily covered here) is that while these Concerned Left-Liberals are smart enough to see through the drug addict hack […]

  29. Slartibartfast says:

Does it only seem that the people who are most concerned about Limbaugh are liberals? I wonder how much of his audience is liberal outrage waiting to happen?
