Weiner fesses up to Twitter bonergate [UPDATED!]

Why? Because he was caught dead to rights, and because other photos are coming out.

He lied. He blamed hackers. He allowed people to defend him (hi, Amanda! Weiner and Edwards, eh? No wonder you have such feminist street cred!) and he allowed others, like Andrew Breitbart, to be accused of trying to set him up. He attacked the messenger. He showed the grubbiness of his soul.

He’s despicable. He’s arrogant. He’s cowardly. And now he’s caught.

But will he give up power as a result? Of course not. This is who they are. He’ll keep his wife in the spotlight, and open the women he had online relationships with to all sort of scrutiny, because power comes first.

Chris Lee? Republican. Had to resign. Anthony Weiner? Democrat. Deserves to stay, and true believers like Amanda Marcotte will defend him until she’s blue in her stupid, disingenuous face — or until she realizes it’s a lost cause, and joins the wilding (and I do so love when they eat their own).

Deal with it.

****
update: BREAKING: WEINER CHANGES COURSE, DECIDES TO RESIGN TO CONCENTRATE ON REPAIRING HIS MARRIAGE AND TO SPARE THE WOMEN HE’S HAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH FROM BEING DRAGGED PUBLICLY INTO THE SPOTLIGHT!

****
update 2: Oops. Forget that last update. It came to me in a dream — one in which I confused Weiner with an actual, contrite, and honorable human being.

Clearly that ain’t the case. Apologies.

I never thought of him as an object lesson before now. Clearly I have much to learn.

  2. motionview says:

I’ll even say I apologize to Breitbart if that’s what it takes to stay in power. Dan Wolfe? Fuck him.

  4. Sears Poncho says:

I’ll just be sitting here holding my breath waiting for the Democrat leadership to call for his resignation.

  5. Jeff G. says:

If someone can track down any comments Weiner made on the Chris Lee incident at the time, I’d love to see them…

  6. Joe says:

Breitbart needs Robert Duvall to jump up and exclaim this committee owes him an apology.

  7. cranky-d says:

In other news, blog commenter Sears Poncho passed out from holding his breath today. The prognosis is excellent, but physicians are recommending a transfusion of cynicism to prevent a repetition of this event.

Pelosi, an ardent feminist, played a significant role in pushing for more information in a scandal that ultimately led to the resignation of Republican Rep. Mark Foley. For those who don’t remember, Pelosi swept into the Speaker’s office after making calls for an investigation into messages that Foley was sending to Capitol Hill pages. “Toward midnight, Ms. Pelosi took the floor. ‘As a mother and grandmother and the leader of the House Democrats,’ she began, demanding an investigation into what House leaders knew about the Foley messages,” the New York Times’s Kate Zernike wrote on Nov. 9, 2006. “Republicans booed, a rarity even in the raucous House chamber. She pressed on, however, smiling her unbudging smile.”

  11. ThomasD says:

We need to thank the mainstream media for jumping on this right away, otherwise Congressman Dick Pic might have been able to continue his amoral pursuit of young unsuspecting victims.

  12. LBascom says:

This whole thing stinks of social cons.

Why must you all be so judgmental?

  13. Alec Leamas says:

I had supposed that Amynda’s outspoken credulity regarding the Honorable Weiner’s easily disprovable stories had more to do with an expression of empathy from someone who had sent pictures of her own erect cock over the internet than a real, good faith belief in Weiner’s stories.

  14. JHoward says:

He showed the grubbiness of his soul.

How’d we ever sink this low?

This will all have been worth it only if he stops being such a jackass toward his political opponents.

  24. JD says:

    Pelosi calls for ethics investigation?!

  25. Dave in SoCal says:

I mentioned this on Darleen’s “Pass the Popcorn” thread, but it’s too good to miss.

As was mentioned, Andrew Breitbart was at the press conference today. As shown here, while waiting for Weiner to appear Breitbart stepped up to the podium and started taking questions from the assembled MBM, essentially taking over Weiner’s presser.

I can imagine all the lefty heads exploding over this.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Steve Israel, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, are calling for an investigation into Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) over the series of sexually explicit conservations and lewd photos he exchanged with a half-dozen women during the last several years.

I don’t know if you are old enought to remember the Barry Goldwater campaign ad with Kruschev(?) saying “We will not have to fire a shot”, while pictures of nine year old proto-Palestinian children marched a round with fake guns a Soviet uniforms.

I could never understand how Germany went so bat shit over Hitler, but to my horror, I am beginning to.

  28. Pablo says:

    Pelosi calls for ethics investigation?!

She’s not stupid. She’s venal and dishonest and smug and condescending and ugly and evil. But she’s not stupid.

Using his office to parade reporters through so he could lie to them might not have been a very good idea.

  29. Crawford says:

[Pelosi] pressed on, however, smiling her unbudging smile.

    BECAUSE OF THE BOTOX!!!

Maybe it’s a personal flaw of some kind, but I’ve never been able to take anyone seriously when their face is frozen in an expression of surprise and amazement. Is it my fault that Queen Nan reminds me a bit of Marshall Applewhite?

  32. newrouter says:

    hell briefly freezes over

BARBARA WALTERS: Anthony Weiner, whom I also know, has a problem. He can be very sarcastic and very sardonic and, you know, there are a lot of times you wish he would not say it. He is a good congressman. He has been an effective congressman. If Sarah Palin can still ride around on her bus and be considered as a possible president, this man can override this, stay in congress and just hope that there’s another scandal that’ll take him off.

JOY BEHAR: Wait a minute. Let me defend Sarah. Let me defend Sarah.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: A scandal that’s going to take us off in a second is they’re going to black us out. We’re done.

BEHAR: Let me defend Sarah for 30 seconds. The woman has no sex scandal in her dossier, in her arsenal. This is a completely different thing from Sarah Palin, and I want to defend her here.

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: I’m taking my pulse.

  33. Pablo says:

If you haven’t seen the Breitbart presser in its entirety, you can do so here. I highly recommend it. This is a big moment in media and Breitbart takes excellent advantage of it…which dovetails rather nicely with Palin’s travels and travails with the Make Believe Media over the last week.

Who’s got the knockout blow? My money is on Beck.

  34. Spiny Norman says:

    BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  35. Spiny Norman says:

Considering how many Kosbots genuinely believe the MBM is in the GOP’s pocket, I’m surprised more of them didn’t take that post seriously.

    Darn.

geoffb, that’s some weapons grade stupid there. How many drugs does one have to take to be a KosKid?

  37. Blake says:

Wow, did Behar take a clue by 12 to the head or something?

  38. Spiny Norman says:

Read the whole Diary SDN, it’s a spoof. I thought it might be real at first, but it gets so ridiculous, I can’t see anyone believing it’s serious (although a couple of Kosbots do). I mean, really:

    5) Who does this help? Clarence Thomas, Dana Loesch, Dana Bash, and some guy named Wolfe. Think about it. Add it up.

    6) Normally, during press conferences of this nature, the spouse of the so-called apologetic Congressman is in attendance. But not this time. Why not? Obviously they couldn’t find a lookalike for her.

    7) Don’t you think he would have apologized using Tweet Deck?

    8) During the press conference, the shadow behind him didn’t always match the image of the person pretending to be Congressman Weiner.

That last one is actually pretty funny.

  39. geoffb says:

    SDN,

Ace thinks it is a prankster hacking Kos but considering the mentality there it could easily be a straight up posting.

  40. Blake says:

SDN: Here is the prescription to become a Kos Kiddie:

Receptionist: How do you write women so well a become Kos Kiddie?
Melvin Udall: I think of a manHuman Being, and I take away reason and accountability.

With thanks to the script writer for “As Good As it Gets.”

  41. Darleen says:

heheheheh … I had to report for jury duty today and was watching CNN in the jury lounge area when Weiner made his “confession”….

it was very hard to suppress my grin and giggles.

  42. Pablo says:

Wow, did Behar take a clue by 12 to the head or something?

Maybe. Just maybe. There a lot of punch drunk media types wandering around aimlessly today. First they realize they’re dumber than Sarah Palin and then this?

  43. Spiny Norman says:

The right thing to do is to step down and take a few lessons in digital privacy.[…]Please don’t check your voter reg card before you decide how to react to this sordid episode.

  45. Blake says:

All kidding aside, Weiner remaining in office is dangerous.

Weiner has already demonstrated he’s a demagogue that will abuse the power of his office.

  46. Pablo says:

Weiner has already demonstrated he’s a demagogue that will abuse the power of his office.

He’s also demonstrated that he’s stupid enough to be a security risk.

  47. ThomasD says:

Weiner knows his marriage only last so long as he remains in office.

I’m picturing his conversation with Huma going something like David Keith’s character in Officer and a Gentleman explaining to his fiance that he has washed out of flight candidate school.

She didn’t marry Anthony Wiener, she married Congressman and future Mayor of New York Anthony Weiner.

  48. B. Moe says:

Huma was a Hillary aide, she knows how to take a punch.

  49. cranky-d says:

Weiner had better know how to take a punch, because he’s gonna get several from Huma. At least, I hope he does, before she ditches his cheating ass.

  50. Ernst Schreiber says:

People keep saying the Weiner will have to resign by the end of the week. My guess is that he’ll check himself into a “clinic” in order to “cure” himself of his “addiction” to “exposing” himself “online,” a “consequence” of “depresssion” subsequent to “years” of “abuse” at the hands of those who should have “loved” and “cared” for him. It’s either that or he ends up

LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!

  51. qdpsteve says:

LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!

That’s cute but I dunno Ernst, I think the Weinerdog’s Farley future looks a lot more like this.

  52. Darleen says:

Oh good lord … Mandy is really doubling down on the stupid.

  53. cranky-d says:

I kind of thought “monogamy” meant sticking to one person. Otherwise you aren’t hewing to the definition, and therefore you are a big fat CHEATER!

  54. Danger says:

“therefore you are a big fat CHEATER”

    Cranky,

Why do we have to have one standard of “CHEATER”?

  55. JD says:

Darleen- Mandy prolly still has to use Velcro on her shoes.

  56. Bob Reed says:

I agree with Ernst; Weiner will check himself into a sex-addict rehab to salvage his career.

  57. Bob Reed says:

That’s astonishing Darleen. I reminded her that monogamy isn’t fungible, and that anything else is, at best, a polyamorous arrangement. And went on to remind her that the problem wasn’t Weiner’s perverse sexting, that it was his lying about it for the last 10 days, supporting the notion that it was some kind of right-wing conspiracy to unfairly “frame” him, enlist the aid of the Schultzes and Maddows in smearing any who dared speak of his evolving explanatoins incredulously, and stand by silently while Kos et al rev up the “politics of personal destruction” machine.

Just like in the bad ol’ days of the Clintonistas when, for instance, Monica Lewinsky went from loyal intern to deranged stalker almost overnight.

Needless to say, Amanda didn’t respond to my tweets.

  58. Alec Leamas says:

@ @lyndseyfifield Which is why when right wingers do that, it’s a story. But someone who isn’t a hypocrite about it? Leave him alone.

I was not aware that when the Honorable Weiner introduced his “beautiful, lovely wife Huma,” that what he really meant to say was that “Huma’s allright, and I hit it, but I’m still game for a set of giant jugs attached to naive college students in awe of my office, whenever I can find them.”

It would seem to me that if they want to be absolved from all sexual scandals as “non-hypocrites,” all Democratic candidates should come with an explicit disclaimer that they have no standards of personal sexual morality and reserve the right to engage in any perverse behavior that strikes their fancy without judgment by the public. It might also be helpful if the screen flashed with the words “warning, the candidate’s profession of religious belief does not imply a belief in the standards of sexual behavior and morality required by said religion.” I’d agree with Amynda on the hypocrite score if they’d just be explicit about the fact that they’re deviated preverts who think that your attempts at monogamy and a decent, respectable family life make you an asshole, and if they quit parading their wives and children around as campaign props to construct the pretense that they’re not indiscriminately rutting heathens – you know, like the Democrat base.

Hell, if I didn’t know better, I’d think the Left really is trying to destroy sll standards of morality, decency, decorum and normalcy in America.

  59. Abe Froman says:

Needless to say, Amanda didn’t respond to my tweets.

Fighter pilots should not “tweet,” but if they must, then they should refer to them as verbal sorties or something.

@ @lyndseyfifield Which is why when right wingers do that, it’s a story. But someone who isn’t a hypocrite about it? Leave him alone.

Does this stupid whore really want to go there? If there’s a separate standard rather than a right and wrong over something like this, then all Democrats who cheat on their taxes should be drawn and quartered.

  61. Alec Leamas says:

I think it would be really funny to parse Amynda’s most credulous post on the whole matter:

    http://pandagon.net/index.php/site/comments/there_is_no_one_reaction_to_harassment

entirely by posting the recently released pictures of the Honorable Weiner’s other twitpics. My favorite is the one where he writes “me” with the up arrow pointed to his face.

  62. Spiny Norman says:

Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, Rule 4.

There have ALWAYS been double standards. Ethical standards, of any kind, never apply to Democrats. Otherwise, Barney Frank would have been jettisoned long ago.

  63. cranky-d says:

    Cranky,

Why do we have to have one standard of “CHEATER”?

I assume you’re being funny. If not, feel free to lay out some definition of gradations of cheating that we can all criticize at out leasure.

  64. cranky-d says:

    I screwed that up.

  65. Alec Leamas says:

@ @JanesAmerica So, it’s more that he made a minor mistake in how he typed something, then? Strikes me as a poor reason for a dogpile.

I’m having fun with Amynda’s twitter denial/rationalization orgy. I replied to the above with “It’s all fun and games until Chris Hansen offers you a towel to ‘cover up’ in a stranger’s kitchen.”

  66. Darleen says:

don’t you love how Mandy is hinting around that Weiner’s marriage was an “open” one and that since Human “knew” we have no business taking notice at all?

  67. Bob Reed says:

Fighter pilots should not “tweet,” but if they must, then they should refer to them as verbal sorties or something.

Yeah, that’s a problem because an Eagle’s call is a “screech” and even Tomcats only “hiss” or “yowl”.

    Considering my long-winded-ness, how’s “blather barrage”? :)

  68. Bob Reed says:

If there’s a separate standard rather than a right and wrong over something like this, then all Democrats who cheat on their taxes should be drawn and quartered.

    BECUASE OF THE HYPOCRISY!11!1!

Turbo ‘Timmah’ Geitner and Charlie Wrangel might take issue with this suggestion. Me? I like it…

  69. Alec Leamas says:

don’t you love how Mandy is hinting around that Weiner’s marriage was an “open” one and that since Human “knew” we have no business taking notice at all?

Like 74% of Amynda’s public statements (the rest are about shitty music), she’s using the situation to demonstrate her self-perceived superiority. There is a certain set of evolved sophistocates – of which Amynda is clearly one – who have set aside your silly medieval morality and do not feel normal human emotions like jealousy or possessiveness in relation to sexual partners. Huma is just a vehicle that she can use in this context to pat herself on the back based entirely upon the fact that the woman has not emerged in the press to be further publicly embarassed – which of course is license for Amynda to speak for her.

  70. Abe Froman says:

“Blather barrage” has just a hint of the old ultra-violence. Kind of like Cluster bombs.

  71. Bob Reed says:

Then blather barrage it is. It’s hard for a used-ta-be to avoid sounding like a pansy considering communications mediums with pansified names like twitter.

I use “Firefox” when surfing just to try and retain a portion of my self-respect!

  72. Abe Froman says:

The real problem with the feminist Mrs. Potatohead’s idiotic comment is that nobody gives a crap about his relationship with his wife. If the Arnold Horshack motherfucker was single, his creepy behavior toward young girls online whom he doesn’t know would still be profoundly disgraceful conduct for a sitting Congressbeak.

  73. “6) Normally, during press conferences of this nature, the spouse of the so-called apologetic Congressman is in attendance. But not this time. Why not? Obviously they couldn’t find a lookalike for her.”

Hanu is busy at home practicing her free penalty kick. The next time we see Congressman Screech’s junk she’s gonna have bent it like Beckham.

  74. alppuccino says:

All politicians have something to hide. For instance, George W Bush tried his hardest to hide the fact that he was visiting the families of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. He also tried to hide the fact that he often went to Dover to welcome those same soldiers home.

Obama on the other hand is very open and transparent about doing things that he deems politically advantageous. He’s never deceptive about using people as props. Because he’s a dick*

    *full circle

Obama is so transparent and non-liey, that he would give the terrorists a heads-up about new intelligence, just to be transparent about amazingly and gutsily collecting new intelligence.

Obama could really stand to collect some intelligence.

  75. Sarah Rolph says:

Interesting point at 32, newrouter. I have had a feeling for quite a while that the Palin hatred is going to backfire one of these days. Here’s hoping that continues.

  76. DarthLevin says:

I’ve never thought of this as a “resignable offense”. To me, you don’t resign public office for bad behavior, you resign because you can’t do the job (or others who think you are doing a shitty job give you the choice of resigning or getting the boot).

What it does highlight to the voting public, however, is that their chosen representative lies. He lies with gusto and the arrogant assumption that his word carries the weight of TRVTH, if not the actual substance.

Please, Weiner. Run again. The oppo’s campaign ads will be quite entertaining. If they’re not 86’d because of “mean-spiritedness”, that is.

  77. zino3 says:

    Weiner! Weiner! Weiner!

Why, oh why, do some Jooooo leftists go so far out of their way to confirm the stereotype?

He reminds me of the underwear maker from Long Island who bought the place where I was renting and took me to court for leaving the place disgustingly dirty when I moved out. (The deed said “As is”)

Unfortunately for him, I saw him coming from ten miles away, and had two rolls of film of the house when I left it. It was immaculate.

Cost him $2000 for being such a disgusting, money-grubbing underwear maker from Long Island.

Why do these people exist? Why do they feel so determined to confirm a stereotype?

And, luckily, idiots like him have no effect on my “You, and you alone, define who you are” principle.

It’s hard enough in this brave new world. Why should anyone define anyone else with a stereotype?

But, at the same time, why do some people work so hard to keep stereotypes alive and well??

    Just askin’…

  78. Matt says:

*it was his lying about it for the last 10 days*

its amazing how many times politicians forget this one very simple rule.

Though Weiner was … hosed… because he was married- most of these politicians who cheat and get caught, lie because they know a high profile divorce will cost them a shitton of money and quite possibly, their career. If the guy was single and doing this ? Sure, its inappropriate and juvenile but with no wife, he just admits it and moves on.

And someone pointed out, after only a year of marriage ? W.T.F.

  79. Slartibartfast says:

That Breitbart clip was sweet. Plus he pronounces the “ei” in his name the right way (eye not ee).

More significantly, I’d wager he can spell it correctly 99 times out of 100, which is about 75 more times than anyone over at Kos can manage.

  80. Lazarus Long says:

Thank goodness for Oscar Meyer Weiner Whistle-blowers.

  81. Challeron says:

Darth@77, you presume that Weiner is not a true representative of constituents who are just as slimy as he, and would do exactly the same things he did, given the opportunity.
