Site Changes

Spent the weekend switching the site over to Expression Engine from Movable Type.  Please let me know if you find any bugs or oddities.

Michael Moore?  Like a VW Bus in a baseball cap and a bib.  With barbecue sauce and rib meat smeared all over the grill.

update:  Thanks for all the feedback.  We’ll work on that right column overlap problem that some of you are having in Netscape / Mozilla / Opera.  In the meantime, if any of you are web savvy and can spot the problem in the code, let me know.  We also plan to add an “open links in new window” checkbox.

A couple of you asked, why the switch?  First off, I was never able to solve the cookie problem with comments in MT (commenters—including me—would have to enter their info each time they commented); that problem is now solved.  In fact, I urge you to sign up as members, which further increases your options as site users.  Second, MT was a resource hog.  PHP is much cleaner and quicker.  Third, EE gave away 1000 or so free installs, and I was lucky enough to snag one.  Lots of increased functionality on the publishing end.

MT served me well.  But it was time to try something new.

  1. Robin Roberts says:

Jeff, for me using Netscape 7.0.2, your right hand column is the size of the left and center combined.  This makes the center column pretty narrow.

  2. Rae says:

You forgot to mention the tater salad stuck on the corner of his mouth…

(Oh and the site looks great, too.)

  3. Jeff Goldstein says:

Robin, the site should work fairly well in the latest version of NN (7.1). There are some funky things happening with the tabbed box on the right, but it should be in proportion with the other columns. We’ll try to fix that soon. If upgrading doesn’t help, try emailing me and we’ll see if we can figure it out.

  4. Alexandra says:

    More Moore, please!

  5. SarahW says:

Alexandra, endure till the end of this Weebl flash, and get a nice round dividend. Or a round dividend, anyway. A little Goldstein channeling, positively erie.

Everything here looks lovely on my browser.

  6. Eric B says:

The right-hand column is bleeding all over the place. Windows 98 / Firefox 0.9.2 (screenshot linked in my name).

  7. Jeff Goldstein says:

Yeah, that’s the same problem with Netscape.  We’ll work on a fix—or, if we can’t find one, we’ll just make an adjustment for browsers other than IE.

  8. Timmer says:

Same problem as Eric’s in Windows XP Home on Firefox 0.9.2 and Mozilla 1.6.  Hey…at least we can see all your stuff.  I keep hearing about all the great stuff that Allah does with Photoshop and I can’t see any of it.

  9. Da Goddess says:

Why’d you have to go ruin ribs for me?

(Things look good in the avant browser)

  10. Maedhros says:

The ads at the bottom right bleed into the tabbed box, but other than that it looks groovy.

    Opera:

    Version7.23

    Build 3227

    PlatformWin32

    SystemWindows XP

JavaSun Java Runtime Environment version 1.4

  11. cthulhu says:

I miss the little checkbox that opened new windows. It was a very good friend, for the time we had together…

  12. guy says:

Site looks good, it’s just the content that’s a bit off.

  13. Jeff Goldstein says:

I think that’s because the content has been drinking heavily and sleeping with waitresses rather than going to bed at a decent hour.  I’ll have a talk with it.

  14. David Gillies says:

Site renders well in Firefox 0.8 under Mandrake 9.2 and KDE 3. Us Linux users love you too, Jeff.

  15. Matt says:

So what’s the cause for switching over to EE?  MT is/was free for non-commercial use… EE is something like $149?  What made the switch worth it, Jeff?

  16. Rene hisself says:

(A blast from the past…) Rene Gonzalez * responds: Michael Moore as a VW Bus? Now there’s a trailer hitch I could suck the chrome off of, if you catch my drift. Talk about ample breasts! Dessert plates hell, I bet his nipples are the size of turkey platters. Mmmmmmm…yummy!

  17. Dude, your comments function now remembers me.  This makes the whole exercise worthwhile.

  18. SarahW says:

Ads are bleeding now in firefox 0.9…and the right column seems fatter. It must be reading the Atkins posts.

  19. Nathan says:

    Nice.  I like.

  20. Scott P says:

Site looks great!  As a Mac user running Safari under Panther I’m seeing the little lines in the last 3 tabs in the right column (normal width here) but it’s a great idea.  The “remember to add pw to…” is also bleeding into the paragraphs above and below but I never did have any trouble getting comments to remember me.

I guess if you can get away from MT, I can finally quit using the “allintern” name I used the first time I commented on a Monica post.  Sheesh, free at last.

Smileys, though?  I didn’t see anything quite twisted enough for PW.  Maybe there’s a Michael Moore emoticon library out there…

  21. Jeff Goldstein says:

    The emoticons are so gone.

  22. Beck says:

Funny.  In FireFox, the emoticon button is the only one of the 6 which show up.

I blame FF for that, though.  For some reason, buttons of all types have trouble showing up in FF.  To create new posts with blogger, for instance, I have to fire up IE.

P.S.  tongue wink cool grin  rasberry shock  vampire

  23. Scott P says:

Someone out there has to have an emoticon library of canned meat products, doncha think?  I’d be clicking on that Vienna sausage one right now if I could.

  24. LittleA says:

I went for the whole enchilada and registered.

How soon before I receive my special decoder ring?

  25. Beck says:

Ooh, sit navigation links at the bottom of the page as well as top.  Mucho mucho bueno.

  26. Eric Akawie says:

The XML feed does not work. I don’t see any posts since 7/17 in my aggregator.

  27. Jeff Goldstein says:

    Thanks Eric. Looking into it.
