    ZOMG!

  2. Spiny Norman says:

    BOOYAH!

  3. David Block says:

    Damn.

  4. Jeff G. says:

I’m giddy. No tricks. Pure grip strength. If I thought I could do it on the first try I would have shot video. My wife witnessed it, though.

Let me tell you: quite a sense of accomplishment.

  5. dicentra says:

There’s also a trick way to do it that someone like me could do, but it doesn’t end up looking like that.

    So I believe you.

  6. John Bradley says:

If I’m not mistaken, phone books are made out of trees…

    DEATH THREAT!

  7. DarthLevin says:

They still make phone books?!?!! I’d be more impressed if you tore yellowpages.com in half, but still not bad I guess. For a luddite. ;)

  8. Bordo says:

    Dude. NICE.

  9. Darleen says:

Whoa. The best I can do with all the different yellowpage books that get tossed on my doorstep is to stoop to pick ’em up and put them in the recycling bin.

  10. Slartibartfast says:

Holy crap, Jeff. That is all.

  11. JoanOfArgghh says:

What did the Yellow Pages ever do to you? Waaiiicissst!

That’s pretty cool. I think if I saw the J.R. do that, I’d go make him a sammich.

  12. Patrick S says:

What did that defenseless phone book do to you? Murderer!

  13. Sarah Rolph says:

Of course they still make phone books–so people can use then to show off their grip strength.

    Way to go, Jeff!

  14. I ripped my yellow pages in half too! Mine’s a gatefold pamphlet, and green… but it’s card stock!

Seriously, way to go. No tricks? Awesome.

Are you going to try to bend the rebar?

I want to see this in person, you going to Chicago again this year?

  15. Bob Reed says:

    Nice.
I’ll send you some NYC and LI books that are considerably thicker, to aid you in your quest to close the Captains of Crush 3.5 (if I remember correctly).

Or maybe you want to go directly to 1/2 rebar like LMC suggested :)

  16. mojo says:

Where the hell is “Platts Corners, CO”?

  17. Jeff G. says:

Don’t know if I’ll be going to Chicago or not this summer. I think we’re heading to CA for Universal Studios theme park for the boy; and I’ll be in New York and Baltimore also at some point. Chicago may have to wait this time, sadly.

But in an effort to strengthen my wrists I have begun learning about steel bending — specific training exercises, proper positioning, etc.

  18. Seth says:

Jeff, if this whole internet thing turns out to be just the fad I think it is, you’re a mere Maillot and handlebar mustache away from bringing back the ole-timey strongman show.

    Seriously, impressive, impressive stuff.

  19. mojo says:

Simply realize the truth: there is no steel.

  20. Mikey NTH says:

    Whoa.

  21. Slartibartfast says:

Seriously: there is no steel. What you’re bending is your mind.

Which explains why Steven Hawking is the absolute ace at bending 8mm steel.

  22. Showy says:

Jeff, congratulations, that’s impressive. Just out of curiosity, how has your improved grip strength affected your baseball game? And do you play any other sports aside from grappling and baseball? I’m guessing, for example, that dramatically improved grip strength would be beneficial to a guy’s golf game.

  23. Jeff G. says:

    I don’t play golf. Yet.

Re: baseball. Haven’t played in a while, but I did pick up a bat the other day. Between the sledges and the thick bar stuff, the bat felt like a toothpick. And I can pinch a 34 oz bat by the knob with two fingers and hold it parallel to the ground. Which is kinda cool.

  24. Blake says:

    Jeff, very cool.

If you’re ever in LA for a feats of strength gathering, let me know and I’ll see if I can arrange to buy dinner and booze.

But do you think it improves your ability to hit a high and tight fastball? Or even to blast a slow-pitch softball?

But do you think it improves your ability to hit a high and tight fastball? Or even to blast a slow-pitch softball?

Well, I can generate quite a bit of bat speed and because I’m stronger I can raise, lower, or extend my hands and arms quicker than before.

    So yes.

But the Lasik helped the most when it comes to hitting.

  27. Obstreperous Infidel says:

Holy shit. Impressive, Jeff. If I ever get the pleasure to meet you, remind me not to play “mercy” with you.

  28. Stephanie says:

Dayum. I could brag that I finally broke 90 and shot an 86 last Friday, but that is wussy compared.

Boys region golf tournament went to a playoff today. Top two teams go to state… top two teams shot 323. 1 hole playoff… all six players for each team play hole #1 then #2 with sudden death with top four scores counting per hole… we ended up runners up 16-17. Kinda wild to see a sixsome all tee-off and play a hole then the second team do the same.

Girls region is Thursday. I’ve got one playing in that.

If you’ve been thinking about getting started with it, I’d say get to it. I suspect your physical training is going to help, but it’s a difficult psychological/physical challenge that isn’t going to get any easier as you get older.
