Another way to skin a cat? CNS:
CNSNews.com asked Gohmert whether defunding the automatic spending in Obamacare was negotiable for him and whether he would vote for a continuing resolution that didn’t rescind the spending. He said the defunding needed to happen but that it could be done as a stand-alone measure.
“There are different ways to do that,” [Louie] Gohmert [(R-Texas)] said. “Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) came up with a great approach that simply does what should have been done.”
Gohmert explained that Rep. Kingston’s bill would cancel any further automatic spending and rescind unspent money that has already been appropriated.
“It will cancel those post-dated checks and it actually cancels anything that hasn’t already been spent and will require for the future, future Congresses to actually appropriate the money,” said Gohmert.
Kingston’s bill, introduced on Mar. 30, is cosponsored by Gohmert and Rep. Michelle Bahcmann (R-Minn.) and would cancel all future automatic spending, require that funding for such programs be part of the regular appropriations process, and rescind any unspent funds.
Of course, this standalone bill won’t be tied to any CR, so the GOP could lack leverage. After all, even if it passes the House, why would those Dem Senators who voted for ObamaCare in the first place vote to cut off money they sneaked in to make sure it gets implemented regardless of any future appropriations?
I will say this: If Michele Bachmann is backing it, it’s fair to say she must be convinced that this particular attempt is the best she’s likely to get under the current House leadership.
I just hope this isn’t another “symbolic” gesture that the GOP leadership knows will go absolutely no where, but which allows them to look like they are playing hardball with the Dems.
I’m torn because on one I hand I want ObamaCare stopped in its tracks and clubbed to death. On the other hand, I want to see clean bills such that one knows what is actually being voted on.
Sure, cranky-d. For this bill, the vote will be on “whether or not to kill children and old people by allowing them to bleed out on hospital steps.”
That’s clear enough.
“I just hope this isn’t another “symbolic” gesture that the GOP leadership knows will go absolutely no where, but which allows them to look like they are playing hardball with the Dems.”
That’s pretty much the way to bet. I don’t know if they are just gutless cowards or are just marking time until the whole thing collapses (not that the two are mutually exclusive).
You can rest assured that every one of those congress critters have an escape hatch planned in advance. The writing on the wall is clearly visible; there’s not enough time or wiggle room left to steer this massive sinking vessel to safety. What with so many people expecting absolutely nothing to change despite the warnings, what can any of these too-late political maneuvers do, really?
Attributed to Ben Franklin, Alexis de Tocqueville and/or Alexander Fraser Tytler, it’s playing out every day someone gets a stupid check from the government. Both parties share blame; but Democrats are not shy about offering moochers monies for their votes.
I sometimes wonder if any of our political elites deserve anything but the
nooseboot.
