Brautigan, Revisited – an American love story

Chapter 15: Link Sausage
Chapter 1. Chapter 2. Chapter 3. Chapter 4. Chapter 5. Chapter 6. Chapter 7. Chapter 8. Chapter 9. Chapter 10. Chapter 11. Chapter 12. Chapter 13. Chapter 14.

The next morning, Robin was giddy with anticipation. Roger was coming over to spend the afternoon, and Robin was eager for Liz to meet him. I was eager to meet him too, though I realized it would never happen. That is, unless Roger arrived at Robin’s apartment dead.
For breakfast, Robin whipped up some scrambled eggs and link sausages, but Liz said she wasn’t really hungry.
“You’ve got to eat something,” Robin said. “You’re thin as a rail.”
“Do you have any Velveeta Cheese by chance?” Liz asked.
Robin shrugged. “I don’t know. Check the fridge.”
As luck would have it, Robin did indeed have a small square of Velveeta in the back of the refrigerator, second shelf from the bottom, beside a rotting peach. Liz spread the cheese onto a piece of wheat bread.
“I don’t suppose you’d happen to have blackberry jelly,” she asked hopefully.
     “Grape,” Robin said. “Smucker’s.”
Liz spread some grape jelly on her sandwich and cut it into two symmetrical triangles.
     “How is it?” I asked.
“OK,” she whispered, “but not perfect.”
Liz opened the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of Glen Ellen Chardonnay, taking a swig from the bottle.
“Roger brought that with him last weekend,” Robin beamed, setting down a plate of sausage on the small Formica tabletop. “We drank wine and watched a couple of porno movies.”
     “How romantic,” Liz said.
“Haven’t you ever done that with this guy you’re seeing? — you know, just get loaded and watch porno flicks, then screw in the shower?”
Liz looked at me and frowned. “Maybe I’ll have some sausage after all,” she said.
     “Indeed,” I said.

Mr. Goldstein (I don’t want to creep you out with assuming familiarity with someone I’ve never met),

You have surprised me with this story.  At first, I assumed it was more surreal goofiness.  The more I read, however, the more I’m impressed with the depth you are weaving into this tale.  I’m also impressed with the subtle way you’ve developed it.

    Nice job.

That’s very nice of you, Nate-a-reeno!
