It is truly difficult to convey to anyone who does not remember 1980 what Ronald Reagan meant. He truly changed the world for the better by changing the way Americans, and many others throughout the world, thought of themselves. Until today he was the greatest living American. I expected this death to happen soon, but even with this expectation, and knowing that he was suffering from a terrible disease, I am surprised at my sadness.
And it doesn’t even mention the October Suprise, the Contras and all those raped and murdered nuns. Or the thousands who died from AIDS while Ronnie watched. Or the legimitization of theocracy in US politics.
Classy, SixFootPole… hope you and Tim Noah are having fun pissing on a dead man’s grave.
I’d be careful about expressing those insipid sentiments in polite company. As Lou Reed beautifully put it: “spittin’ in the wind comes back at you twice as hard.”
SixFootPole, the October Surprise you mention is pure fiction. It alleges that in October, 1980, George Bush flew to Iran to convince the Ayatollah into not releasing the American hostages until after the election.
It’s not true, it’s been proven untrue. And if it were true, then it speaks volumes of Carter’s inability to govern that a mere civilian could negotiate with Iran when he didn’t do a damned thing (outside of wrecking a few helicopters).
Oh my. Little did we know when we wrote things like this:
Reagan, by contrast, really was the sunny, well-tempered man he played on TV, as even his bitterest opponents conceded. When he displayed anger in public, most famously in the
“Homeboy”? Are you serious? I mean, you “dare” me?
What the fuck grade are you in? Hoss. Chief. Champ. Homeboy.
Anyway, I didn’t read your essay / article. I simply fixed the link and provided a description based on the little bit I could glean from the original broken link left by Mr. Pole.
And the link works, doesn’t it? Which means that anybody who wishes to click over can draw his or her own conclusions. Right hoss? Chief. Champ. Homeboy. I’m not the world’s designated reader, afterall.
And for the record, I couldn’t give a shit about your site or anything you might say on it, “nuanced” or otherwise. You’re not even on my radar screen. The only reason you have a link here is because some jerkoff decided to drop into a dignified thread and dump it there like some runny turd.
Nope, you didn’t go too far and were quite inventive. I did follow the links, including the one to the stalker site, and was unimpressed. He did say some good things about Reagan but the things he gave credit for were minor compared to his actual accomplishments, which the guy dissed.
For instance, he sets up a straw man saying that the Right claims Reagan won the Cold War alone. No-one I know says that. They do say that Carter’s policies wouldn’t have had the same result at the time. He also follows that with the “they were going to collapse anyway” line, but that had been true for seventy years—Marxist economics is fatally flawed—and someone needed to give it the push. The man that did that was Reagan.
FWIW, the stalker’s piece is more balanced than the hit piece on Slate but the stalker does an under-the-radar link to the Hitchens hit piece, which is disgusting. I can promise I’ll react much more pleasently when Clinton passes even though his accomplishments pale compared to Reagan. It only seems appropriate. Besides, no need to disregard his accomplishments; same goes for Reagan.
Yes. Yes he did.
He will always be remembered.
Rest in peace, Sir.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:

That he did and he did it smiling and joking all the way.
For the actual truth, minus hagiography, read this:
Slate article pissing on Reagan’s grave [link fixed, ed.]
And it doesn’t even mention the October Suprise, the Contras and all those raped and murdered nuns. Or the thousands who died from AIDS while Ronnie watched. Or the legimitization of theocracy in US politics.
Get more from this:
some garbage from an Andrew Sullivan stalker site, where a dead man’s memory is further pissed on, because waiting until he’s buried is too much to ask when you’re a vile, vicious, half-informed, dickless, cocksucking, cretinous, moron with a computer [link fixed, ed]

Jeff,
I love how you fixed those links.
Too much, you think?
Thanks Jeff, your link-fixing is further evidence that you are the king.
I got mad… you got even.
