Roger arrived bearing gifts. A single red rose, for love, and a dozen condoms, for later.
Roger was fairly tall and quite handsome. His features were sharp and strong, giving him the no nonsense look of soap opera doctors. He’d go far, provided he said the right things to the right people.
“Roger, this is my friend Elizabeth,” Robin said, standing hip to hip with the doctor to be. They looked good together, Robin and Roger, framed in time like a still life of ripe fruit.
“A pleasure meeting you, Elizabeth,” Roger said, though “pleasure” somehow became “pleashah” this far northeast.
“Call me Liz,” Liz smiled.
“Very well then. Liz it is.”
The three stood smiling at each other like French film stars vacationing on the Riviera, and I couldn’t help but get caught up in the joy each of them felt in being alive.
“Boone’s Farm strawberry for everyone!” I shouted, teary eyed.
Liz looked over to where I was sitting, on a stack of phone books next to the refrigerator. “Boone’s Farm for everyone,” she said.
But only three glasses were filled.
I ate what was left of the link sausages and took a walk.
