Or, put another way: if conservative speech is hate speech, civility itself is (at least partially) defined as the social rejection of conservatism and classical liberalism.
It is a call for the very kind of “shunning” Paul Krugman says he desires, albeit couched in the language of reconciliation.
Halibut, says I.
I praised the President’s speech because it was well written. But that does not mean we are not being played as Jeff cautions. The slanders that were made against Palin, Limbaugh, Levin and others were intentionally made to cause harm and done in bad faith. That Obama wisely distanced himself from that is understandable, but I suspect he sympathized with those who made the attacks and only distanced himself because it was politically wise for him to do so.
And for Rep. King to now go that extra step and call for restrictions on gun carrying within 1000 feet of a congress person is frankly insane. How will this deter someone intending to commit murder or grevious injury? It won’t. If you are intending to commit murder, how does an added felony gun possession charge deter the crime? If someone gets caught preparing to do such a crime, there are plenty of applicable felonies available to charge them with. Such a law only can be used against the poor schmoe citizen who is legal to carry and happenes to walk into the 1000 foot circle of legal shitstorm. All this does is further reduce freedom and safety for law abiding citizens. That Democrat idiots like Senator Schumer, Rep. Wasserman Schultz, and Rep. Grijalva would be calling for something like this is expected, but Republican Rep. King? Who does he think he is? Joe Scarborough?
Halibut is too good for these bastards. Colonoscopies by rotten shad, dog fish, and skates say I.
How distanced? Just by remaining silent on the question as the attacks — conducted by his political allies — proceeded unabated? That’s a funny sort of distancing, ain’t it, hugging the mouthers while they are mouthing only remaining silent about their mouthings while doing his hugging? This is a phantom distancing. Or no distancing at all.
I’m just amazed: all this guy has to do is read a speech and tell us how he can help us “heal” and untold number of Republicans swoon. They fall right back into 2008.
I don’t care what Obama reads off a prompter. I care what he does and what he’s done and why he does it. He’s a con man. And to watch people fall back under his spell so easily is dispiriting.
I’m with you, sdferr. There wasn’t a “distancing” going on here. There was a pointed silence.
But then, maybe I’m just a half glass empty guy. Maybe Obama was on vacation, or was watching football, and wasn’t really paying attention…?
I’m puzzled too. Once exposed as con man, I’d think he’d be shunned by the people who were fooled to begin with. Of course, some of us were never fooled, so we aren’t in the position of having to admit we have been. And therein, I guess, lies the rub. The foolees have their own troubles admitting their gullibility, so in consequence, won’t.
By the way, Jan Brewer was booed, and people in the crowd — many of them out of state students — were eating nachos. This had nothing to do with the Tucson community “healing.” It was a campaign event aimed at moderates and independents.
Sean Hannity keeps defending the reaction of crowd by comparing it to an Irish wake, because “people grieve differently” and we shouldn’t judge how they mourn. Maybe hooting and hollering and booing Jan Brewer was “what the Tucson community wanted and needed.”
But generally at an Irish wake, the attendees know the deceased. They haven’t been recruited to be there, handed free t-shirts, and told to enjoy!
On paper, the speech was fine. But it was also cynical as an event, and crafted to make the most out of a tragedy. Period. That’s who this guy is.
Or they are either moles or have been doubled through some offer and/or threat. Politics is the real actual warfare to the Left and they would be foolish indeed if they were not to use all resources that war footing affords a side.
For some reason I’ve been unable to quit thinking about Guy Heinze Jr. and his victims today.
Who?
Exactly.
WAAAAAY OT: John Fox just hired by the Denver Donkeys. Uninspired choice, I think, but then their whole search seemed uninspired…
“civility” goes global warming

civility = stfu
He’s a good coach, afs. I bet we go back to the 4-3.
As a drunken Irishman, I can assure Mr. Hannity that we don’t make a habit of treating memorials as pep rallies.
And you cry even more at wakes than at funerals. It’s not the same. Not even a little.
…all this guy has to do is read a speech and tell us how he can help us “heal” and untold number of Republicans swoon. They fall right back into 2008.
Apparently most conservatives in the media and the blogosphere have learned nothing over the last two years, and intend to cap this willful ignorance by insuring that the mid-term elections meant a mandate to continue business as usual. Sheesh, even the people over at Ace of Spades say it was a good speech.
Just what speech did they hear?
And what is this fiction that he said political discourse did not cause the shootings? If he had said “These crimes had exactly nothing to do with our political discourse. Now let us recall the lives of those slain…” and proceeded to talk about the victims, one could almost see the point. However, that is not what he did. He lectured us about civility and “sharing dreams.”
Well, sir… fuck you.
What is the reason for this pathological need too many conservatives have, to pat their sworn political enemies on the back? And enemy is the precise word. They will continue to oppose liberty and classical liberalism every step of the way. Even today they continue the slanders, after Barry performed his magical healing speech. Have conservatives forgotten the sum of the actions taken by Democrats and President Earflaps McBaritone since 2008?
Oh, I do hope the Global Dead-White-Male-Caused Climate Non-Staying-Putness brigade join forces with the Civility Now! chorus and the No Labels collective to produce a sequel to No Pressure. That would be awesome!
That wake analogy really bugs me for some reason.

What is the reason for this pathological need too many conservatives have, to pat their sworn political enemies on the back?
That’s how you prove you’re better than your enemies. It’s the same technique the left recommends for combatting jihad.

Alligator Gar gets my vote.
Well, I guess the stupidity out here on the right is so thick you would need Deepwater Horizon to reach the bottom. Nauseatingly, even Jonah Goldberg is praising this speech. Go find a barf bag:
The speech was a good speech, probably the best of his presidency (somewhat surprisingly, that’s not as high praise as it might sound). The president, who campaigned as a post-partisan, spent two years in office as a rank and intellectually disingenuous partisan. For two years, conservatives have been decrying and denouncing Obama for failing to live up to his own standards.
Last night Obama took our advice. He gave what may have been the least self-involved speech he has ever given — and the most presidential. It was high-minded and empathetic, open-hearted and civil. It was inspiring without belittling those not on his side.
Huh? Come again? Is this the same Jonah Goldberg who gave a brilliant speech at the Ashbrook Center last September, where he noted trenchantly that those who push civility and nonpartisanship and unity are actually working to obfuscate the meaning of democracy, where disagreement not only never ends but is in fact the very essence of democracy? Just whom does Goldberg think Barry was addressing when he drooled about civility and partisanship?
President Earflaps McBaritone: But at a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized — at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who happen to think differently than we do — it’s important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we’re talking with each other in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds…
…And if, as has been discussed in recent days, their death helps usher in more civility in our public discourse, let us remember it is not because a simple lack of civility caused this tragedy — it did not — but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to the challenges of our nation in a way that would make them proud.
Let’s see… which is it, Jonah? Barry? Is political discourse the cause of these shootings or not? If not, and Barry says it isn’t, then why does he weave in a plea for a veil of civility? Is this about politics or murder? And why would a figure with Barry’s history and politics plead for “civility” at this place and time in particular? Where was his thinking when he called out people for being bitter clingers, or driving the nation into a ditch? When he ever so politely told his opponents “I won” and “I’m the only thing between you and the pitchforks” and “I don’t want to hear complaining from the people who caused the problem”?
Again, fuck you, Mr. Hope and Change.
It’s a terrible, retarded idea, of course, ‘feets, but that doesn’t take away any of the pleasure I feel as I laugh at some of my progressive friends.
Ha, he’s going to take away your livelihood! And you donated to him! Ha!
ok that’s pretty righteous
By the way, let us stipulate that it is inconceivable Barry and his people did not know what the likely behavior of the audience would be. Think about it. The White House staff and the entire freaking Secret Service had to prep a mountain of details and meet with many people before Barry could walk out on stage or even board a plane to fly to Tucson. They knew what kind of a crowd would arrive, they could control how many and whom had they chose. They knew how a largely collegiate audience would react to His Presence. This was intended as the opening salvo for the 2012 campaign, nothing less.
Any memorial was an afterthought, mere words blowing across a teleprompter.
Barrington might have a bunch of cheap houses coming onto the market.
Yay! Affordable housing for the peoples!
I apologize for ranting, but the more I think about this “wonderful speech” and the praise it gets from usually sane minds like Jonah Goldberg, the more offensive it becomes. Just consider this one line:
…And if, as has been discussed in recent days, their death helps usher in more civility in our public discourse…
Seriously, what the ever-lusting fuckity fuck-all? You know what has been discussed in recent days? Not how death ushers in civility, but how That Witch Palin and the Racist Teabaggers Are To Blame For Murder. The last four days have been consumed with the least civil discussions imaginable, all emanating from the MSM and friends of the Left. It was mere moments after the initial reports that microweasel Paul Krugman tweeted this was a political assassination, in effect. Is this the vaunted civility Barry cites?
Howling Jeebus on a megaphone. Barry must have downloaded that speech from Cloud-Cuckooland.
Well, you know, the election of Obama brings in to play a new line for a Romney or Palin*: “People are afraid to vote for me, cuz I don’t look like our current president.”
*names use as example only
As imaginative as Aristophanes was, I doubt he could have come up with a Barry Obama.

As imaginative as Aristophanes was, I doubt he could have come up with a Barry Obama.
True enough. Barry is more a child of Derrida. Well, Jeremiah Wright, actually.
AS I said earlier today ( http://tiny.cc/2foir ), Obama’s speech was part of a good cop-bad cop charade designed to self-fullfill what Mark Penn called his need for an “Oklahoma City moment”.
But, you know, they’re good men, all of them; especially the Rethugs! joining them calls for phony, unreciprocated, civility. Do like Reagan, call ’em out; using humor and ridicule if they’re afraid of sounding “mean”.
Like the famous line, “There you go again”. It screams “LIAR!” without having to actually use the word. Although I personally enjoyed Bill-O directly using the “L” word the other night.
“Civility” is just one of the many brands of Leftism, a label behind which we find the same substance:
“Shut up!” they explained.
PEACE! JUSTICE! CIVILITY!
DO IT FOR
PAUL! [insert name here] ____________I hate to keep humming the same note…but even this speech that some dupes on the right are praising contained some hidden poison darts…
In poker parlance, this is called the “tell”:
” but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to the challenges of our nation”
As Barry has never, ever lied (as far as he can tell), the call for honesty can only be interpreted in one way: “conservatives and Tea Partiers should stop lying about me and my program; only if they agree with me can they be civil and honest”.
“face up to the challenges of our nation” can only be interpreted in one way: “my agenda is both necessary and morally right; therefore, the end justifies the means”.
Labels, Monster? I thought we’d transcended such things.
You know, I would like to see the conservatives, blowing kisses at Barry, square two things. On the one hand, they say he gave The Right Kind of Speech, which talked about civility and hugs and stuff. On the other hand, he telephoned Sheriff Dupnik to congratulate him on his work, which as far as anyone in the public can tell, has consisted of going on talking head shows to blame talk radio and right-wingers for putting a bullet in Giffords’s head. So tell us, ye high and mighty conservative elites, how a man who has called for polite and honest discourse can honestly praise a partisan public servant on a crusade of mudslinging?
Or are you just tired of being snubbed by Brian Williams’s personal secretary?

This is the bottom line to me from all those “praising” this speech.
I praised the President’s speech that … was intentionally made to cause harm and done in bad faith.
Seems to me that any praising of anything done in bad faith is – dare I say it, an own goal and wrong.
here this is hysterical… we have propaganda whore Viv Schiller’s National Soros Radio, what lurvs lurvs lurvs to yammer on and on an on and on about soldiers killing themselves. It’s like a leitmotif with them.
So the Army does something about it – they study the problem, and find our that soldiers what have a bit of religion are less likely to off themselves. Then they create a sort of screening tool.
NPR is NOT amused.
This is not a hard decision to make. This is a 1-inch putt if you’re playing golf. This is clearly, blatantly unconstitutional — and it has to stop. is their pull-quote from the piece.
I think propaganda whore Viv Schiller’s National Soros Radio would just prefer the soldiers go right on blowing their heads off actually. That’s the cherished narrative.

propaganda whore Viv Schiller’s National Soros Radio is using the phrase “tax expenditures” more and more
after listening to propaganda whore Viv Schiller’s National Soros Radio it’s good to reflect on the following…
stop tax expenditures to npr and cpb
If everyone believes that this is really federal spending, then when Congress eliminates those “tax expenditures” maybe no one will notice that Congress is actually extracting resources from the private sector

Well, thank Gaia and her civil furies that someone in the beltway clusterfark didn’t drink the Tucson Kool-Aid. I’m stunned at the bootlicking on the right. As if somehow, some way, we just have to praise Barry for his campaign rally. To the extent that conservatives are actually demanding we take the speech out of context and pretend history began last night around 6PM PST.

“…when you criminalize words the only expression left is action.”
Anyone know who said this? Steyn? Ezra Levant? I can’t find an exact match to the quote.

Who has been “killed” or “beaten” or “harassed” by Coyne-Steyn “hate
propaganda”? The killings and bombings, as Ezra Levant pointed out, occur in
countries without freedom of expression ? because when you criminalize words

“It means more than half of the states are now objecting to the program.”
– Which means that if a Constitutional Congress is called Obamacare. along with ANY Fed attempts to enforce forced commerce on the electorate would be ended forwith through an amendment.
– Which also means we can expect the ‘many nippled narrative’ will be amended to include the unconstitutionalality of Constitutional amendments.
– Coming from the mouth of a Progressive near you soon.

I think it’s nice you’re sticking up for Julian I’m not particularly fond of Mr. Manning though.
ick
Well, the Manning situation remains cloaked to some extent so long as Wired refuses to release the portion of the logs it has redacted, but the fact is that he is being treated worse that we treat suspected terrorists.
“Julian Assange” is out collecting sticks to form a faggot.
“but the fact is that he is being treated worse that we treat suspected terrorists.”
my g*d cheney WATERBOARDED the gay guy. OH NOES!!!!
ink
I don’t think Bradley acted honorably. I think to some extent the way they treat him is for his own protection – real soldiers would probably beat his face if he were allowed to mingle mingle. Plus his actions were fairly treasonous as these things go anymore.
Julian is different and after the silly charge of scandi rape and the nonsense about how the failshit U.S. government should arrest him on some flimsy pretext I think people need to remember that that’s not who we are, really.
Supposed to be we’re people whose armed forces don’t treat sensitive information what can embarrass our allies and worse as carelessly as they seem to have done in the Manning case.
Or so says the Illuminated PW.

I agree. That’s why we should let the Russians or Chinese kill him and then make those phoney tsk, tsk noises that are so popular in the international community.

Yeah…Sorry Barrett, I’m shedding no tears for either Assange or Manning; both should be making big rocks into little ones at Fort Leavenworth-at best…
Manning violated the oath of enlistment he took, and that’s the end of that story. And Assange? He’s a self-serving twit who thinks everyone’s secrets are fair game, you know, except for his. Big rocks into little ones, and that’s a charitable position on my part.
Julian really isn’t here nor there I don’t think. He’s certainly not as worrisome as the Julians we don’t even know exist.

This was supposed to go right after my #78 however work got very hectic for a while.
I can’t, from that quote, figure out if Steyn is quoting Levant or if he is adding that part himself to a statement by Levant. Because the phrase only shows up online in the testimony of Steyn I’m assuming the phrase is his as he rewords the sentiment of Levant. But that is only an assumption on my part.
It is politically simple and, dare I say, easy to excite extremists and there are many politicians out there that do it very well. What is more difficult is meeting in the middle ground in a calm and respectful manner.
Awwww can’t we all just get along? Meggie Mac hurling knives at a gun fight. And in the back, too. Don’t ya just love her?

I couldn’t even read the Meghan “did I tell you I was a Senator’s daughter? please pass the gravy” McCain’s article once I read the intro blurb on top ..
This “oh both sides are equally at fault” crap is borne of nothing more than the absolutely braindead “co-combatants” pc fuckery I’ve had to deal with for too long. Had to be about ’97 or ’98 that #2 daughter was jumped in the locker room at high school. JUMPED. In response she did nothing more than restrain her attacker until others could come and remove her.
And she was suspended for the same amount of time as her attacker as a “co-combatant”; held as much at fault as her attacker.
When I confronted the Vice-Principal about it, his disdain for my child and me was evident “It is not our job to figure out who was at fault since we can never be sure in all cases. Your daughter chose to participate ….” “What? She was to just allow herself to be attacked?” “She should not have responded”
THAT is the type of twisted mentality that holds VICTIMS as morally culpable as perps if they choose to defend themselves.
That is just another reason the Left (and some others) gratuitously hate Palin (and Tea Party members) with every fiber of their being.
“Blood Libel” was actually an apt adjective to describe how Palin’s opponents view her. No evil is beyond attributing to her, even murder.
Just think of the political left — with their little rhetorical stunt of the last five days — as having pulled the pin on a grenade, and then thrown it (the pin, not the grenade) with all their might at Palin and the tea parties. Oopsie.
An attack on one of us is an attack on us all. (Boehner)
It’s interesting to see what the reactions were in our foxhole, though. Some hid behind others, some treated the pin as the grenade, and some let the fact that they purposefully threw anything at all go by without a whimper. Worse of all, were those who congratulated them for their dyslexia.
America is a corrupt whore
They’ve been around since the beginning though, but lo and behold, the tea parties arose in spite of them and have gone on to seize ground after ground, hardly pausing to catch their breath.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/01/13/open-letter-parents-following-tragedy-tucson
In the days and weeks ahead, as we struggle with these issues ourselves, many of us will find that our children are struggling with them as well. The questions my daughters have asked are the same ones that many of your children will have – and they don’t lend themselves to easy answers. But they will provide an opportunity for us as parents to teach some valuable lessons – about the character of our country, about the values we hold dear, and about finding hope at a time when it seems far away.
…
We can teach them the value of tolerance – the practice of assuming the best, rather than the worst, about those around us. We can teach them to give others the benefit of the doubt, particularly those with whom they disagree.
We can also teach our children about the tremendous sacrifices made by the men and women who serve our country and by their families. We can explain to them that although we might not always agree with those who represent us, anyone who enters public life does so because they love their country and want to serve it.
So shut up you fuckers and train your children to love us as much as we love ourselves. We’re from the government and we’re here to help. You stupid ingrates.
a lot of people in America who enter public life do so because they’re obamacare-loving dirty socialist whores like brain-damaged gabby

Here.
– While she’s busy teaching her children how to cower in fear and get fucked over by the first Leftoid opportunist they run across, is she also telling them ANYTHING that would help them survive in the real world?
The leftists’ model of the world doesn’t work — they have a knowledge problem, yet seem to remain unaware that they have a knowledge problem — we think.
In contrast, our sketchy model of the world seems to work fairly well, despite our own recognition of our short comings, i.e., that we have no expectation that we can centrally design a plan to carry out our desired better outcomes, preferring instead to leave the design to a highly distributed organic process in which no one knows how the whole thing comes together.
Michelle believes it’s necessary for her to tell people how to react to the killings. We believe it’s unnecessary to tell people how to react, expecting instead that they can work it out on their own. Which will people prefer in the long run? Being told, or being left free to make their own way? I know which way I’d vote.
For just a second I thought she was talking about the military but then she went on and said no it’s the public union whores and their pimps.
too soon?
– Not only too soon, also wrong in so many ways.

it’s kind of a peek at how they’re gonna milk and milk
In related anecdotes, it’s way more important to make sure there’s an extra pack of menthols laying around than hectoring some random adult about the feelings you had when the space shuttle went kablooey.
(I kid. We all know you’re not supposed to joke about being out of Kools.)
this is from last week
Lorillard Fights to Snuff Menthol Ban
Lorillard Inc., maker of the U.S.’s leading menthol cigarette brand, is engaged in a fierce battle to prevent the Food and Drug Administration from banning a product that accounts for roughly 90% of its sales.
My ma woulda slapped the shit out of those up-in-everyone-else’s-business bitties.
She was a bit of a hero this way.
She also lived her entire life without paying one utility bill.
But, much more importantly, she was at a loss for words when Michael Jackson was lit on fire by Pepsi. This was very traumatic for me. I needed guidance. Will it grow back? She didn’t know. She. Didn’t. Know.
My ma woulda slapped the shit out of those up-in-everyone-else’s-business bitties.
I had my daughter tell me she was proud of me the other day for getting into it with a dumbass after they said something politically stupid. She then added “But, then you’re the Mega-bitch of Gwinnett County.” Which is what my kids named me for not putting up with shit from anyone (especially school administrators).
I wear that title like a badge of honor.
“it’s kind of a peek at how they’re gonna milk and milk”
– No. Someone whispered in their ears that jerking the tail of an already angry electorate was a really really stupid idea, and they’re polling the Komrads to see if anyone has any brilliant idea;s of how to escape from this PR disaster they’ve gotten themselves into.
Spoiler alert: Michael Jackson grew his hair back after Pepsi set him on fire.
Spoiler alert: Started banging kids, though. Yeah, I know. Weird.
I’d consider a tattoo, Steph. Maybe get an old school, rebuilt Camaro.
So yer mom woulda been slapping Barry upside his punkin head bh? ‘Cause he’s all about being in everybody else’s business. Cambridge police for instance.
Meh. I’m holding out for an Olds 442 convertible. I’ve got standards.
And I don’t do tattoos. :shiver: tacky!
this station is in LA Mr. Hunter they’re probably okey dokey p.r.-wise – but I wonder if this is something NPR is doing across the whole country
– LA, in fact California doesn’t matter. It’s the other 300 million people they may have pissed off.
– The attacks were aimed at turning some moderates and independents. They still don’t get it. I think, and I hope, they never do.
– Since the Left is all about selling their liberties for faux security they’ll never understand their mistake. They don’t get the whole “independence” thing. They don’t realize that what they’re doing, attacking independence while trying to woo the middle, is like selling attic bats to little old ladies.
Thanks for everyone’s input, even the stupid sort from folks like Pablo who believe that being suspected of something makes one a shitbag who should be treated in a manner less than that in which the U.S. has tended to treat those merely suspected of crimes. Hope to see you some of you at the rally! I’d love to hear your usual insults in person, face to face and all that!
Barrett
Oh good lord, you actually believe such twaddle? Really?
Actually, yes, Darleen, I do believe it and so does the rest of our membership, which includes former CIA, journalists, authors, scientists, ex-military, and other people of the sort who, like you, are extraordinarily accomplished people with obvious insight into these issues.
No mimes?
Breathtaking specificity in a very civil, yet earnest, “No Labels” way. Bravo.
Can I carry the massive puppet head thingy? Nothing says anarchy like a good puppet head thingy. And it IS coming up on Mardi Gras.
Barrett
So all governments are the same and none of them are necessary? Or only one world utopian government, run by extraordinary humans with obvious insight that will tell the rest of us how best to live our lives?
With perfect transparency, of course.
Geez, I would say I feel old, but I kinda left behind utopian ideas about humanity about the time substance-influenced all night gabfests got old in the harsh light of “it’s noon and I gotta go to work” the next day.
Put it forward as a thesis statement, Barrett. You know the audience here. You know your goal.
Why should the denizens of pw join in your movement? How do the principles held by Assange and Manning coincide with our own?
Bonus points if you can do so in a relatively straightforward manner.
Double bonus points if you can use the words “frivolous eschatology” or “fraggle rock”.
Yeah, you kind of managed to not at all represent anything I said there, Darleen. As to the other fellow, this is a necessarily short press release that does not include the details our our plan, which may be found elsewhere. Now, if you’ll excuse me, the gang at Little Green Footballs is libeling me again so I have to go make fun of Charles Johnson over at Diary of Daedalus.
That mission statement or whatever it is is so sweeping in its specificity as to render Obama’s call to “change” constrained. Well done.
Barrett, dude, “fraggle rock” was a total gimmie.
Goodness, is this some kind of flounce week or what? Progs have been announcing all week how their “not gonna visit this cesspool of a blog again” or “I just can’t get through to you ingrates, I’m gone” all over the nets.
I wonder if he flipped his hair and sashayed as he left.
not at all represent anything I said there
BB, I’m talking about what the paragraph I cut-n-pasted says to me.
Somehow I don’t think that “details” will make much difference if you’re starting from the premise that THIS ERA IS DIFFERENT!11!! and we can do away with such silly things as nations/states and all government.
It’s like you have mainlined Lennon’s abominable “Imagine” and haven’t sobered up.
I’ll listen if you wish to disabuse me of my interpretation of some sort of weird anarchist utopia, but I have my doubts that I’m wrong.
It was a fun flounce though, Steph.
Turns out Darleen isn’t a former CIA agent. See, I didn’t realize that. Sorta figured that everyone around here was from Langley.
Disappointment doesn’t even begin to cover how I’m feeling.
How do the principles held by Assange and Manning
They got principles? Who knew?
There are details? Though I should have guessed, informed consent being one among the many promises of a brighter day to come. That’s a dicey deal though isn’t it? I mean, generating the sort of information that would enable detailing plans for the transformation of the globe in conformity with acquiring genuinely informed consent of many billions of people sounds like it would require an awful heap of work. Like lifetimes millions over even.
They hold principles. I assume anyways.
Information wants to be free. The US is bad. Secrets are inherently dangerous. Blah. Blah. Blah.
Normative to their group rather than universally logical, functional or moral.
They teach you this in spy school, D. It’s like one of the first classes.
Secrets are bad, m’kay?
bh
The “tell” for me in that :::cough::: press release was the The last twenty years have changed the landscape in which man operates. I realize it is some sort of oblique reference to the Age of Internet (so much for that clarity and transparency pledge) and while it has certainly made information transference faster and access to information greater, it hasn’t created more wisdom.
A computer can hold gigabytes of information. It doesn’t make the computer eligible to make decisions about people’s lives.
And, damnation, we have loads of people filled with all sorts of information that means nothing.
Look at all those students at U of AZ last night at the We Thrive Pep Rally. I dare say they know a lot of things – minds stuffed. But they didn’t have the brains to know how to act at a Memorial Service for dead people. Dead MURDERED people.
I betcha I could snag a student at random and ask “who is nominated for record of the year?” and get an answer. But would the kid know who Job was?
Fancy gadgets do NOT define a human as smarter/wiser/better than humans that came of age during times when, for instance, there were only 3 national broadcast channels on tv. Or humans that grew up before tvs, or electricity.
Heh, sometimes I suspect information of secretly wanting to be false. Kinda far from free, anyhow. Free of horseshit? Free of funnies? Free of bad sectors?
They teach you this in spy school, D. It’s like one of the first classes.
Damn, bh. I guess in that first class I just was too dazzled by my first trenchcoat and Walther PPK to pay attention.
It’s very high-level tradecraft. Practically a Zen koan.
First you learn to keep the secret. Then you learn to release the secret indiscriminately.
Think: What is the sound of one hand gibbering like a pretentious moron?
If you are going to hold a Press conference you need to have at least one dedicated professional there to make sure things go smoothly in the correct direction. One who has had some recent practical experience and has had excellent training in how to set up, take control of, and run organizations.
Sharks swimming with the minnows.
I’m pretty sure that information doesn’t want a goddamned thing, what with the whole “not being a sentient being”-thing and all.
Information obviously has an intrinsic non-zero, positive value. By definition: if it didn’t people wouldn’t want it, or it wouldn’t be information, or both.
Even moreso in this Modern Information Age, where no one does a lick of actual physical work…
So why in god’s name would anyone expect information to be ‘free’. Do houses, automobiles, and gold coins ‘want’ to be free as well?
Perhaps, rather than steal other people’s information and distribute it willy-nilly across the globe, young master Assange and company might have considered purchasing whatever information they sought, and then given it all away for free, all philanthropic-like. Perhaps they wouldn’t be able to find a legitimate seller; perhaps they couldn’t afford it — but at least they’d have taken the morally righteous path.
Oh wait, I forgot – means and ends. If you’re of the correct politics, you can do anything you want as long as the end goal is sufficiently Utopian.
‘Night, folks.
By which I mean, “check our agreed upon dead drop for a more properly coded message as I think B. B. might have made us.”
Please note Krugman’s latest column, “A Tale of Two Moralities:
Get that? We oppose taxation, because supporting others amounts to theft. We have a fondness for violent rhetoric. On the one hand, compassion. On the other, moral outrage.
He can’t help himself. He is incapable of logical, rational thought.
Mexico has a net national savings rate that exceeds our own by 20% of GDP.”*
SW, I think that most of us would not mind paying a bit more in taxes IF there was a fixed end to the taxes, and they were fair, and that fixed endpoint was codified and unmovable. But it’s never ending, the Left’s caterwauling of the social plights that WILL require more and more taxes of those who actually toil. And at this junct-ure taxes can’t, won’t support the social network the Dems envision; they will resort to printing monies, borrowing monies, and going into unspeakable debt to entities we’ll never be able to repay, just to attract voters to their party. Krugman the Keynesian is becoming more and more unhinged as the debt grows; I expect his fat head to asplode at any time when the reality of exactly where we are penetrates his defense of ideology.
serr8d, he just cannot present the argument of the right honestly. Undoubtedly there are a cluster of those who deny the legitimacy of all taxes; not the overwhelming majority of the right, who recognise the need for such taxes as are required for the legitimate duties of the state as set out in the Constitution. Taxed Enough Already isn’t the same as No Taxes Whatsoever, not least because it makes a lousy anagram. You are quite right, one of the major disagreements are on the size of the government and the taxes required to fund it.
Taxation to provide a safety net for those out of work? Is it the position of right to remove unemployment insurance completely, or to restrain the upper limit of time it can be claimed?
I am sick to the back teeth of the lying bastards lying. The endless strawmen, deliberate mischaracterisations, and the endless rewriting of history. Fuck Paul Krugman and the ugly horse he rode in on.
I didn’t mean “anagram”, did I? Please have an “acronym” for insertion above.
Oh, my! Am I seeing that I’ve lost the respect of the erudite Barrett Brown? Heavens to Betsy! Mommy!
I’m interested in these “anti-war” groups that are BB’s chums. Are they anti- this war, anti- that war, or more sort of
War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me
Silver Whistle
Dennis Prager yesterday was just entirely frustrated by, as he puts it, the “gratuitous hatred” it has for Palin, et al. (over the week he has slammed Krugman and company) This is a man who rarely raises his voice and he was almost besides himself, especially over the “blood libel” libels — as he points out, there are few better than him that knows exactly what blood libel means and to attempt to say Palin was being “anti-Semitic” in using it, or that it was a “dog whistle” to anti-Semites is a vicious lie.
So why do Krugman, et al, believe they have the moral right to lie, denigrate, demonize and refuse to deal in good faith with the non-Left? The gratuitous hatred of Palin is a clue — it is so out of proportion to anything she has ever done it points to an emotional reaction, a psychological issue. The real facts of what the Right believes is of no concern to the Left — the Right is evil for standing in the way of the Left’s vision, which would make the World all unicorny and fluffy clouds and a flatscreen tv in every home. It is a psychological mindset akin to the gratuitous hatred directed at Jews — regardless of facts, any ill that happens is the fault of the Jews. Anti-Semitism has no logic, if you discover a “bad Jew” it just substantiates your emotions, if most Jews aren’t bad its just because they are hiding it.
The real facts of what the Right believes is of no concern to the Left — the Right is evil for standing in the way of the Left’s vision, which would make the World all unicorny and fluffy clouds and a flatscreen tv in every home.
And then Judy Garland starts in on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It’s all a bit too Zeitgeisty, isn’t it? Always ends up looking like Jonestown.
So the Krugster is gonna double down on stupid, huh? I would not want to be the NYT ombudsman this year. Hardest working scribbler in America, he’ll be.

It still smells a little like Wolcott in here. More Febreze, please.
There is this quoted phrase which seems to be floating all over the conference that Barrett Brown talked up here.
“Information wants to be free”.
The quote is from Stewart Brand, however that is only a piece of the quote and as we have seen many times when only a part is quoted sometimes it is because what is left out doesn’t fit an agenda.
The whole quote is.
I think the whole is much more interesting and makes points which put Wikileaks in a different light than the partial quote we usually see.
