Talking back to 80s music, 16

Fine. You’re wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully pretty. But the fact remains, I’m a married man, so if you’re that desperate to have your, er, love cat stroked, you’re just going to have to do it yourself, okay…?

(…Having said that, there’s no law that says I can’t watch, should you choose to go that route…)…
“Love Cats,” The Cure.

  1. michele says:

So, is it just me or does anyone else sing the Inspector Gadget theme song when listening to Love Cats?

  2. Joe Geoghegan says:

I will now, thanks.  Two more for you:

“The ABC’s” is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is “Baa Baa Black Sheep.”

“That Song by the Spin Doctors” is “That Song by the Spin Doctors” is “That Song by the Spin Doctors.”

  3. triticale says:

“Ode To Joy” is “Clementine” is “The Marine Corps Hymn”.

I I have also melded Hamlet’s “To be or not to be…” with “Octopus’s Garden” but never bothered taking it very far.

  4. michele says:

Joe, that also works if you replace Spin Doctors with Nickelback.

  5. Jeff B. says:

    I consider a debt discharged!

  6. jeremy says:

Whoa….no way………plus, dude, y’know, if you, like, play “Dark Side of the Moon” and put on that Wizard movie with, y’know, Judy Garland… the whole thing kind of syncs…wait…what was I saying?  I’m gonna go grab some munchies.

  7. Rae says:

O.K. I thought I knew every 80’s song out there, but this one totally illudes me….Love Cats?

  8. Rae says:

P.S. Jeff, stop talking about me…

  9. Jeff B. says:

Rae – what, you never went through a gloomy Cure phase?  (Heaven forbid you were one of those HAPPY kids during your high school years…) The song is called “The Lovecats,” by The Cure, and I believe was it was at least a Top 10 single in late 1983.  Great, jazzy, goofy song.  Go buy Staring At The Sea (their near-perfect early singles compilation) and some black nail polish, then get back to me.

And michele, you’re not so far off with your Inspector Gadget connection: Bob Smith actually was inspired by to write the song by a cartoon (movie): Don Bluth’s The Aristocats.

  10. Rae says:

Well, Jeff B. I actually don’t remember it, but it isn’t because I attended “Happy High.” I shamefully confess that I was rather into pop music when I was 12/13.  I hadn’t yet developed a palate for tastier music.

I will do a bit of digging and see if a tune recalls some distant memory…

  11. Bloggerhead says:

Ah, Jeff B., you are correct, sir.  Along with Standing on the Beach, I’d rate other perfect (pre-CD) compiliations, in no particular order, as follows:

    Songs to Learn & Sing–Echo & the Bunnymen;

    Singles Going Steady–The Buzzcocks; and,

Snap!–The Jam (especially the version with “Away From the Numbers” on it.)

Oh, shit, now I’m gonna have that song ringing in my head for days…Away from the nuuumbuhs, ‘way from the nuuuumbuhs

  12. Ash says:

I just might start pestering you if you don’t do I Wanna Be a Cowboy by “Boys Don’t Cry” soon

    Just fair warning and all…

  13. Ash says:

Yeah, I always confuse brackets with angle-brackets. You want to make something of it?

  14. A fine scotch says:

    Ash,

(/pissed off Cartman) I am going to kick yewwwww in tha NUTZ! (/pissed off Cartman)

I’m going to have that f’ing song in my head all day.

And my boss already thinks I’m gay.  This is NOT going to help…

  15. A fine Scotch: You need help being gay? Or help to not be thought of as gay?  Is that homophobia or meta-homophobia?  This is so confusing.

But seriously, back on topic, I like to watch.  Oooh, sorry that’s so 70’s.

  16. Jeff B. says:

Bloggerhead, you are very correct sir.  Snap! is a classic compilation, even better on CD (with extra tracks, just like the CD version of Standing On A Beach/Staring At The Sea.)

I don’t distinguish between the CD and pre-CD era like you do (I’m only 23, natch), but you forgot one other truly essential singles compilation from that era, maybe even the best of them all: New Order’s Substance.  I swear to God I have no brief whatsoever for ‘dance music’ (talk about meta-homophobia!) but the first disc of that collection is pure 100% perfect and sequenced like a raging beast.  It’s euphoric, from the gloomy post-punk ersatz-Joy Division beginnings all the way to the later dance-pop stuff like “True Faith.” The 12” of “Bizarre Love Triangle” alone ALMOST makes me forgive the band Yes for introducing the ‘orchestra hit’ into the sonic palette of 1980’s music.

Ah, the joys of drifting off-topic…
