Talking back to 80s music, 17

No. In fact I’m perfectly straight. And stop calling me “Johnny” already, would you please? That’s not my name and you know it.
Josie Cotton, “Johnny Are You Queer, Boy?” From the Valley Girl soundtrack, and elsewhere.

…and I wasn’t angry until you started whining lack that.

–no, wait, that’s 90’s music, isn’t it?  Which song where you talking back to?

  2. michele says:

Why are you so weird, boy?

    Johny are you queer boy?

    When I make a play

    You’re pushing me away

I always thought she was talking to Johnny Marr.

  3. Jeff B. says:

Dammit.  I hate it when I don’t catch one of these musical references.  It leaves me feeling like my manhood has been diminished.

And Johnny Marr’s not queer, is he?  That’d be great if he was – 80’s Gay Guitar God!  (Now Morrissey, I could see, even if I think a lot of what he does is just a put-on.)

  4. michele says:

I think Morrissey is very much into self love, and not the Kleenex kind of self-love, but the HEY LOOK AT MY GIANT EGO! kind.

If a man loves only himself, does that make him gay?

  5. I saw the bullet had got her right in the ear

I knew then the end was near

So I ran down and I said, in her good ear, “Debbie, why’d you do it?”

She raised her head, smiled, and said “aaaggghhhh I did it for Johnny”

Johnny?  Well like who’s Johnny?  Answer me, Debbie, who’s Johnny?

Does anybody here know Johnny?  Are you Johnny?

There was one guy named Johnny but he was a total geek, he always had food in his

    braces.

    Answer me, Debbie, who’s Johnny?

Oh God this is like that move Citizen Kane you know where you later find out Rosebud

    was a sled.

But we’ll never know who Johnny was because like she’s dead!

  6. michele says:

    Stay gold, Ponyboy.

  7. Pale Infidel says:

    Johnny, we’re sorry…

    Won’t you come on home?

What is wrong, in my life?

I must get drunk every night.

Fine Young Cannibals wasn’t it? I really dug that song.

BTW, I just got Andrea’s reference (The Homecomming Queen’s Got a Gun – by that English lady, Julie Brown or Tracey Ullman?)

  8. Bill Peschel says:

Julie Brown. Great song. She also did “Earth Girls Are Easy,” the song, and later, the movie featuring future archery star Geena Davis in a string bikini and Jim Carrey (not in a string bikini).

  9. Sean M. says:

Julie Brown wasn’t English.  You’re thinking of Downtown Julie Brown, hostess of the booty bonanza dance show known as “Club MTV.” I feel bad about myself for knowing this.

  10. Beck says:

No, it makes him unisexual.  That’s who unisex bathrooms are for.  HAW!

  11. Jeff C says:

It’s The Josey Cotton Band… took the chair lift to the top of Mt. Baldy one summer night in the early 80’s to hear them play that song…
