I hope that’s a ‘wow, so good’ and not a ‘wow, worst movie I’ve ever seen’ because it’s on my netflix list.  grin

  2. Jeff G says:

Good, very very good (which, added to “Wow!” completes the review in 5 words or less.  Job well done, Jeff…!)

  3. Matthew says:

WOW for a Van Sant film? Spooky. I was surprised that there wasn’t an enormous cry from the H’wood left when GVS dared make his two killers share a gay kiss in the shower. Shouldn’t he be decried for his hatred of gays as irrational, perverted killers?

For that artsy climbing film TOUCHING THE VOID I can do one a review in four words:

    STUPID F*CKING WHITE PEOPLE!

  5. Matthew, the shower scene was to show the infatuation that the blond kid, Eric, had for Alex. That’s probably why he agreed to help Alex with his plan. Alex allows Eric to kiss him. Eric is a means to an end for Alex, as evidenced in the second to the last scene of the movie. (don’t want to spoil it for anyone) Anyway, they’ve showered together before, probably, because of the non-chalant way Eric goes about getting in… But Eric turns to Alex and says, “Well, I guess this is it.” (meaning, the day they’re going to presumably die) “I’ve never even kissed anyone yet, have you?” at which point Alex gives himself over to Eric. In other words, I take it to show motivation for Eric’s character. He eats, sleeps and showers with Alex, it’s obvious he can’t be separated from him. Doesn’t mean that Alex is necessarily gay.

Ok, so I just watched it this weekend and said wow too. I liked the tracking shots. I liked the Roshamon-like time differential. I liked the character of John, who didn’t follow a stereotype and despite his obvious familial problems was the kindest of all the characters…

    I didn’t like the “eeny-meeny” ending. –scott

If you liked “Elephant”, you’ll LOVE “Gerry”!

  7. Jeff G says:

I own Gerry on DVD, but I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet.  I have a feeling I will like it, though.  I tend to be a fan of minimalist pieces.
