Teresa Heinz Kerry: “Let’s.”

Barbara Walters: “You and your husband have been married how long now, Teresa?”

Teresa Heinz Kerry: “It’ll be nine years, Memorial Day.”

Barbara Walters: “Nine years. And in all that time, surely you’ve come to learn certain, shall we say, truths, about the Senator — truths not available to the public…”

Teresa Heinz Kerry: “I think I see where this is going, Barbara –“

Barbara Walters: “Well, then you’ll understand that I have to ask: medals or ribbons?”

Teresa Heinz Kerry: “Oh, I’d have to say ribbons, definitely.”

Barbara Walters: ” — And just so we’re clear, you know this how, exactly…?”

Teresa Heinz Kerry: “Whaddya mean, ‘how’…? I’ve been sleeping with the man for almost a decade now. You don’t think I can recognize a limp string when I feel one brush up against my leg at night?”

Barbara Walters: “– I see. But –“

Teresa Heinz Kerry: “– Christ, wait just a second. We’re still speaking metaphorically here, aren’t we?”

Barbara Walters: “Well, one of us appears to be, yes.”
