All hail the state

For it is good and just, and its motivations pure and selfless.

For the chil — ah, you know.

A good observation in that article – does the “G” care about its reputation, when it holds monoply on certain services? How are they held accountable – it is not like people can go to their competitor… Unless you count moving away. In that case, Detroit should be denominated a failed enterprise and sold in BK.

about as much as many government workers do about their jobs and possible firing ….that’s why there is such polite, attentive customer service at the DMV and Post Office.

  3. Squid says:

With SquidCo™ brand torches, an angry mob could keep that fire company busy for weeks!

  4. Caecus Caesar says:

    And me?

    I came, I smoked, I coughed.

  5. sdferr says:

    deluded:

[David] Remnick: It’s certainly a relief to a lot of people that Obama shows no signs of the incuriosity displayed by his predecessor. Obama has proven his literary and intellectual firepower, it’s true, but this can’t be the center of focus, not even for literary intellectuals. It matters a great deal more that his decisions in a situation like Afghanistan lead to success — or a minimum of catastrophe — than it does that he is reading a novel by Jonathan Franzen. And, by the way, no president — not Obama or anyone else — is likely to read and write at the same pace as someone like Teddy Roosevelt, who somehow devoured hundreds of books a year while acing more than a few tests in the Oval Office. The aggressive anti-intellectualism of the Tea Party movement is another matter. People like Glenn Beck are not political analysts, they are circus barkers, fantasists trafficking in bogus history and ugly conspiracy theories. And, unfortunately, he has real influence on millions of people. Another unintended consequence of technology.

  6. Rob Crawford says:

The aggressive anti-intellectualism of the Tea Party movement…

    Huh?

Wasn’t it just earlier this week that the Tea Partiers were being excoriated for reading “dead authors” like Hayek and Jefferson?

Oh, wait. This is the definition of “intellectualism” that counts adherence to fads and “elite” bigotries as “intellectual”, isn’t it? Actual learning and thought, exploration of ideas and consideration of evidence never enter into it, do they?

  7. alppuccino says:

Well, I skimmed the Remnick interview sdferr.

He talks just like Obama. Like someone who’s never been in a physical confrontation of any kind.

And let me reiterate, George Bush Reads more books in a week than Obama can name any of his 57 states.

  8. happyfeet says:

    Bush is my favorite one

  9. alppuccino says:

Amen Bro. If you find out where he’s going with his book, let me know. I’m camping out. That handshake is on my “Barrel List”.

    Buckets are for pussies.

  11. alppuccino says:

You’re teasing, of course? Are you saying you’d be nice to the Mama Grizz?

  12. alppuccino says:

Of course you would. It’s the classy thing to do.

  13. bh says:

It’s that aggressive cocooning that might best explain why the New Yorker sits between Everyday Food and Teen Vogue in circulation.*

  14. happyfeet says:

I’m teasing I don’t want to do anything what might could be misconstrued as encouragement

  15. alppuccino says:

You’d work it out I think.

You know, I looked around to see if I could get info on W’s book tour, and there was an article about how he’s doing and interview with Matt Lauer on some show on NBC. Well they allowed comments on the article and then the retards sprang out of the woodwork with “thanks for the golf oil spill Goerge” and “I don’t miss having Bush butcher people in eye-rack”.

What’s next? Comments on an article about quilting? “That fucking quilt looks like George W Bush’s admenstruation. All patchy and sewn together and full of padding, and shit”

  16. sdferr says:

It’s something of a comedown from Thurber and White (not to mention a few others).

  17. bh says:

Shit, I’d say he’s a step down from Tina Brown.

William Shawn is the other one I’d put up there with Thurber and White.

  18. Caecus Caesar says:

    All hail…

  19. serr8d says:

There’s an excellent pic of George Bush up right this minute on Drudge, best I’ve ever seen of him. I stole it for future uses.

  20. Bob Reed says:

    Times change; eh serr8d?

  21. geoffb says:

    From sdferr’s link in #5.

David Remnick, 51, is the editor in chief of the New Yorker. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his book “Lenin’s Tomb.” Remnick’s biography of US President Barack Obama, “The Bridge,” published in the United States in April, will be published this week in German by Berlin-Verlag.

Let me get this straight. The editor-in-chief of a long established American magazine writes a book about the current US President and it is released 6 months early in Germany in German. Okay.

LaHood Weighs Urging Ban on All Driver Phone Use in Cars.

  27. Bob Reed says:

You evidently haven’t heard of the “Assurance” free cell phone with 200 minutes/mo for folks on public assistance happyfeet.

    http://assurancewireless.com/

It’s not available in California-yet, but it is in Texas and parts back east. Of course, it’s here in NYC.

  28. happyfeet says:

now we have food stamp phones

This used to be a great country.

  29. newrouter says:

christine goes on the record with greta

  31. TRHein says:

The news story indicates that this also happened in 2008. The folks in the unincorporated area should have petitioned the county for a volunteer fire department back then IMHO. Surely there are enough folks who live in the unincorporated area to support one.

  32. Nolanimrod says:

One thing is a little weird, juxtaposition-wise: Olbion / Albion. ???
