I don’t know about you all, but for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.

Wow, that haircut ain’t doing her any favours – it’s right down to the wood. I can hear the royal Spanish horses neighing from here. I hope it didn’t set the taxpayer back more than $500.
I can only hope the D’s trot her out on the campaign trail as much as possible. Because I just cannot get enough patronization and complaining from the First Couple….
Pointing out her poll numbers is racist.
Look, if cake is actually being served, I have to say that I’m down with that.
I wonder if she’ll send me some of her tomatoes. My tomato plants got some kind of creeping crud this year and since the ones in the grocery have almost no taste I think I deserve some of hers. You know, since she’s rich.
LMC – the tomato blight is really bad this year.
Eh – it’s not so bad for her. She’s widely proclaimed by people afraid to be accused of racism to be the most beautiful woman in the world.
Does Barack Obama have to smack a bitch?
Alec, football season approaches, so, throw a helmet and shoulder pads on Mrs. Obama and put her in at middle linebacker.
Then she’ll look great.
#2 LTC John:
You’re downright mean! Some people need to mourn on the Spanish coast!
It’s true! It’s on the internet and I made it up!
I’m confused as to how any of this is relevant to anything.
…and I never cared about the “public image” of Republican presidents either. America is a tabloid nation I guess.
AJB:
You mean you weren’t driven into a fury by Michael Moore’s maliciously edited footage of George Bush playing golf in Fahrenheit 9/11?
Useful Idiots, part II is up.
Looking at the First Lady, I think (with apologies to Alexander Pope):
And, with apologies to Mel Brooks:
On its good days, AJB has the mental capacity of a baked crouton.
sdferr, Oliver Kamm (who features in Sweeney’s piece) was at Harry’s Place the other day talking about the species (9:26 am in the comments). I regret his Times column has now retreated behind the subscription wall. For a lefty he often talked sense; more importantly, he punctured idiots’ balloons quite frequently.
I used to read Oliver’s blog daily SW, back in ’02- ’04, but lost the habit somewhere along the way.
Maybe AJB could try to square how the DNC wants to trot her out on the campaign trail as she is the more “popular” of the two and this “not relevant”. Nah, he might have to address the utter lack of appeal the D’s have right now.
“George Galloway and Yvonne Ridley declined to take part in this programme”. Good programme, sdferr. Should be required listening for our own useful idiots.
It’s like kozmic karma, because I have been watching Mission to Moscow, which is replete with useful idiots. It’s quite a shock finding out that Michael Curtiz directed it. It has been serialised on Youtube.
Touchdown SW. Thanks for the link.
A small return on all of your useful links. Keep your eye open for the loving given to this scumbag – the film is full of such stomach churners.
I guess relevance is subject to relativity now…. Look, y’all, bunnies!
On its good days, AJB has the mental capacity of a baked crouton.
Too bad this isn’t one of his “good” days.
I’m confused as to how any of this is relevant to anything.
Hardly surprising that our resident salad garnish is confused, but I figure it’s worth spelling out anyway:
Obama was elected on glamour. As noted here and a thousand other places, he was an empty suit. He was the not-Bush. He himself said that he was a blank screen onto which people could project their hope. The simple fact is that he was a brilliant marketing creation, and nothing more.
AJB is correct, in part, in that America is a tabloid nation to a great extent. How many voters actually research the issues, the policies, the biographies, and the positions of the candidates they vote for? How many just watch Katie Couric, night after night for two years, talk about how awesome the half-black Chicago Messiah is, and so when Election Day finally rolls around they just pull the lever that they’ve been programmed to pull?
These polls show that the glamour has worn off. Obama cannot lead the nation; he can’t even manage an office. Michelle is a very well-off woman with a penchant for whining about petty nonsense. People have noticed. Sure, they’re three years too late, but at least they’ve finally woken up to the reality of what’s in front of them: this family isn’t qualified to occupy the White House.
So, it’s relevant to a lot of things, AJB. It’s relevant to the limits of political marketing. It’s relevant to the character and ability of the First Family. And it’s relevant to the events to come over the next two years and change.
Good luck with your treatment, by the way. I hope the new medicine helps you to concentrate a little better when it comes to ideas that don’t fit on a bumper sticker.
More reason for hope:

I wonder if the first couple gets the irony of these “stickin it to the man” moments.
