He’s also one of the one of the most explicitly political musicians around. He is a longtime activist against the death penalty and the criminal injustice system. Earle’s previous records Jerusalem and The Revolution Starts…Now stirred controversy among right wingers because of their open challenges to the U.S. “war on terror”–especially the song “John Walker’s Blues,” written from the point of view of the American captured during the U.S. war on Afghanistan, John Walker Lindh.
Earle spoke to Socialist Worker’s Jack Trudell on a recent tour stop in Madison, Wis.

(Oh, Jeff, you might be interested in this at the NYT where they are editorializing that “Rush is Right” for resurgent Republicans, and that “I Hope (Obama’s policies) Fail” might just be working.)
My Dad used to tell us about how much he loved Marching Season in Belfast, because they “may have been rotten Orange bastards who’ll end up burning in hell, but they have the best songs.”
I love me some Steve Earl, but every time I hear him I get this song stuck in my head. And down here, you hear a lot of Steve Earl.

It’s hard to fathom how, in this day and age, there are enough Trots to fill a damp bedsit in Hackney, let alone populate an international organisation. Must be Groundhog Day for them, every day.
you must have some sort of decoder ring for comments. Because I didn’t know “The guy playing guitar behind Steve Earle looks like Dan Baird from the “Georgia Satellites” indicated I was perturbed by the leftward leanings of Steve Earle.
I engage in ritual denunciation of myself for engaging in code words that secretly point out the lefty leanings of Steve Earle.

First saw boobs that year. Yeah, I’m still kinda excited about it.
Who’s this Earle guy?

I first got into him with Guitar Town as a young lad in middle school. The whole album is great.
True that he went left, and some speculation it only got worse after his drug convictions… but that could be a chicken and egg debate.
