So today is the one year anniversary of my kicking the tobacco habit (American Spirits, yellow). Yup — kicked its ass. Hard. Did it cold turkey, too. None of that patch nonsense.
To mark the occasion, I link to these two Reason pieces: Jacob Sullum’s “Van Dough,” and Joel Miller’s “Cigarette Stash.”
What do these stories have to do with quitting smoking?
Not a damn thing, so far as I can tell. Unless coercion and quitting have come to mean the same thing, I mean.

Congratulations, Jeff! My quit date was on July 2, 2001, so it’s a year for me, too.
Do you ever dream that you’ve started again, and wake up in a cold sweat?
Yeah, me too.
Congrats to you too, Bill. I miss it—since I quit I’ve had a hard time calling myself a “writer”—but then I discovered scotch and cardigans…
All better!
