After the boys of summer have gone…

Rest in peace, Mr. Buck. You were one of the greatest.

  1. In 1982, when the Cards were playing awesome ball and were on their way to winning the World Series, I spent many days in my basement in Indiana, waiting for my enlistment date in he Army, smoking pot and lifting weights, with the super cool voice of Jack Buck my only friend on those weird and lonely days.  My girlfriend used to constantly berate me for my obsession with baseball; with a superstar like Buck calling games, how could one NOT become obsessed?  When the Cards beat those super-cool dudes playing for the Brewers (Yount, Molitor, Cooper, Ogilvie, Thomas, Gantner, and my all-time favorite turncoat Card, Ted Simmons–what a ballclub!), it was, to coin a phrase from The Cure, “just like heaven.”

    Molitor rocked.

And lest we forget, Jim Palmer lost to Don Sutton in a one game playoff for the Eastern Division championship that year.  I was at that game—Ben Oglivie made an amazing catch, Yount had a big day… Hell, I think Sixto Lezcano may even have gotten into the action.

Broke my spirit.  Didn’t recover until ‘87.
