Some Recent Stories I Haven’t Bothered To Post On [Dan Collins]

Whelan-Publius outing, 15 sexiest conservative new media women, Obamas’ date night in NYC, Michelle Obama at Eiffel Tower, Gordon Brown references Obama Beach, Al Gore employees sentenced to hard labor in North Korea, Sotomayor’s fractured ankle, Lebanon vote against Hezbollah (whether it represents “victory for (the universal referent) Obama), horrific murder of pregnant woman in Oregon for fetus/baby/unborn child by Facebook acquaintance, O’Reilly vs CNN w/regards to coverage of Pvt. Wm. Long murder, absurdity of top 100 political websites according to Wikio–many others.

What other glaring omissions have I committed?

Where the hell is Jeff/TSI/Darleen?

Hopefully they’re all just out on a beer run, and will shortly return, all re-invigorated-like, to the Only Sane Place Left on the Internet.

That said, Mr. Collins — you’re doing an absolutely yeoman-like job keeping this blog cruising along whilst Jeff is off doing whatever the hell Jeff does; which presumably involves a 100lb weight vest.

    Anyways, kudos to you sir.

Megan Fox , if she were able to talk to Megatron: “I’d barter with him,” she muses to the July issue Total Film UK, “and say instead of the entire planet, can you just take out all of the white trash, hillbilly, anti-gay, super bible-beating people in Middle America?”

And here I thought she was just another brainless slut who won out in the genetic lottery. She’s a fucking political genius!

  8. Dan Collins says:

    Thanks, John.

  9. What John Bradley said. I’ve had nothing informative or entertaining to say lately, and so I haven’t.

As always, you’re doing a great job; I always enjoy your stuff!

True. I’m still trying to figure out how Antony & Cleopatra became a golf thread. NTTAWWT.

  19. serr8d says:

Jeff hasn’t posted since May 26. Only a few sporadic comments; the one you noted concerning the hate-fuck thing was troubling.

Hope he’s doing alright, and just needed a break from the Obamapression.

  20. happyfeet says:

  21. JD says:

Great catch on the compare and contrast between Tiger and Teh One. So many times I have seen them likened to each other, and nothing could be further from the truth.

  22. bh says:

Winnebago? Nah, this is more Jeff’s style I’d say.

  23. sdferr says:

What other glaring omissions have I committed?

Obama picking Lakers in 6 pissed me off more than anything ever, for a few seconds. Had a mega-rant on that shit. Didn’t come up.

(Have you noticed that these multi-subject/linkheap threads don’t go well? Better than the Shakespeare one, usually, but–)

  33. Dan Collins says:

Oh, well the common thread is things I thought I might care enough about to read about, but that I didn’t really care enough about to post about. Like that Whelan-Publius thing. Is it too early for me to say I don’t give a shit?

I had thought of writing about the Oregon murder, and a NYT article from awhile back stating that these women were all, if you will pardon the expression, psychotics, and go into how that’s really different you know from why men kill and all, but then I realized that if women don’t give a shit then I don’t really have the authority to speak to these weirdo crimes.

  34. JD says:

  35. serr8d says:

They’re blaming icing in the pitot tubes for the Airbus crash. I know half the time my boat’s speedometer won’t work if that tube is clogged; and it clogs frequently. Can’t believe they’re using that technology in today’s modern aircraft.

Reminds of the ‘O’ ring failure on the Challenger. Simple, and stupidly easy to fix.

  36. Bod says:

Can I just add that it feels creepy, being endebted to Ruth Bader-Ginsberg over the ‘hold’ on the Chrysler bailout?

  37. Rick Smith says:

    Dan-

Respect your efforts here to carry Jeff’s water. If you choose to go it alone I’ll be there. The defection of two NY Senate Dems to the Republican side is potentially huge. The spin is only starting, but the first impression they gave was they were doing it for the good of their constiuents. A good first response and easy to defend. We may see more of this at the state level as the pols at the state level will be the first to start getting heat from the failures inherent in a share the wealth government. Not much in the way of political contributions will be coming from those that end up losing it all in this scheme. It’s a shame that most of those didn’t see it coming.

  38. Dash Rendar says:

That twatwaffle person is back. I though having monies was bad meya.

  39. Dan Collins says:

Rick, thanks, but I’m hoping that this isn’t going to be a long stand-in. I can understand why Jeff’s fed up, if that’s what this is about. If he doesn’t want to do this anymore, I’ll do what I said before and hang up my own shingle. Protein Wisdom isn’t without Jeff. I wish he’d put up some ads just to cover the expenses.

Don’t forget to tip the host.

  40. Dan Collins says:

I think that Whelan just published an apology. If I really cared, I’d say that probably makes Surber feel silly.

  41. Joe says:

    Soros’ favorite restaurants.

  42. Rick Smith says:

You have to play with the cards that are dealt to you or trade them for better ones. Sotomeyer’s play of her cards is not unusual for someone in her line of work. Income that is limited to the largesse of government has more good things than bad for most people, while it may limit you on the top side, it also protects you on the bottom side. Fewer layoffs, virtually impossible to be fired, benefits that most cannot have in the private sector. I have seen both sides and chose to go in another direction. Found it to be a roller coaster, but what a ride. No limit to what you can choose to do one way or the other. I was lucky to quit at a convenient point, but that’s also part of this game.

  43. Dash Rendar says:

I think world would be a lot better off is that Hungarian Mupeteer Soros were to choke on a chicken bone. Just sayin.

  44. SBP says:

They’re blaming icing in the pitot tubes for the Airbus crash.

Some more speculation from Miles O’Brien, who used to be one of the few decent reporters on CNN (actually, he might be a raving moonbat… I don’t know. which is sort of the point). He used to be CNN’s science reporter, and is now out on his own.

  45. Chrees says:

At this point, I realize Animal House had the perfect political philosophy. “You fucked up, you trusted us.” Your mileage may vary, but I don’t think by much.

  46. SBP says:

See, I’m broke like my net worth is negative.

Not to worry. I’m sure Barky’s plan to steal money from everyone else so you can pay off your student loans in inflated dollars is still going to come through.

  47. bh says:

I’d say the best way to not be outed is to not be an asshole.

  48. SarahW says:

Kate Gosselin hit Emeril with a spatula. BAM!

  49. SarahW says:

I just thought that was newsworthy.

  50. Joe says:

You know something. Having Jeff blogging regularly would be great But then again, if he really did take off to go write a book, or do something other than running a blog, it would not be a bad thing. It would be healthy.

  51. Rick Smith says:

    Dan-

I find very few places to be as topical and yet allow comments to take their course. Their are even a lot of conservatives out there that try to stay on top of things, but the unpaid status of most bloggers makes it a labor of love and not a labor of conscience. I understand this and believe it is a huge obstacle for someone trying to make a difference. Jeff had a chance, I choose to believe that he made a choice to fight certain battles based on principle and frankly principle doesn’t seem to have the same weight that it once had. I mean no disrespect for what has happened to him, but I might be excused for saying that giving full shrift to idiots and people with an obviously ulterior motive could not be expected to end well. Having said that, I believe Jeff to be more talented and more important to me, more reasonable than most I read on blogs.

  52. bh says:

I mean no disrespect for what has happened to him, but I might be excused for saying that giving full shrift to idiots and people with an obviously ulterior motive could not be expected to end well.

The chance that we’re not copacetic is growing, I’d say.

  53. Rick Smith says:

    Meya-

I think people choose to take a postion in the federal judicaialy for a lot of different reasons. I know one who absolutely recoginzed that he could quit the awful office hours with late night calls from sucm bags and could basically play golf whenever he wanted to. If you are a lawyer and choose to believe that everyone involved in your profession is pure, I’m sorry, but I know for a fact that they are not.

  54. bh says:

I mean no disrespect for what has happened to him, but I might be excused for saying that giving full shrift to idiots and people with an obviously ulterior motive could not be expected to end well.

Could you flesh that out? Right now, it seems a bit condescending.

  55. Bob Reed says:

Family gatherings in honor of my nephews return from Iraq has precluded me from reading most of the info on the downed Air France aircraft. I did read the link SBP provided, but found a few of the explanations wanting…

If they were operating at max altitude, it is true that they have a very narrow speed range to operate in. But that os primarily due to the thrust available versus the power required to overcome the drag required to operate at the requisite speed to generate the lift they needed to remain in the air. The whole transonic speed discussion is only appropriate in that the drag increases dramatically as the aircraft exceeds .85 mach…

The ramifications of an aerodynamic stall would not be as serious for an experienced pilot, in an aircraft such as the Airbus, as the writer implies. The wing is designed to stall on the inboard sections first, so that the pilot would retain undegraded roll control; the same is true for the elevators, and therefore control on the pitch axis too. Admittedly, stall are much more potentially devastating when they occur in a banking manuever as they can lead to a flat spin, if the pilot isn’t careful; but I can’t see an airliner banking at such a high angle as to not give plenty of indication (by the actual physical buffetting) that a stall was in the offing…

My own humble theory? They were trying to pick their way through a squall line when lightining strikes FUBAR’d their electronics. Without the eyes of their weather radar, they flew into the most lethal part of the cumulo-nimbus formations and suffered catastrophic wind shear phenomena that literally tore the aircraft apart…

May God rest their souls, and comfort their families…

  56. SBP says:

    Haha good luck.

Care to make a small bet on the annual rate of inflation at the end of Barky’s first (and hopefully, only) term?

  57. Bob Reed says:

Annual inflation rate in 2012 will be (drum roll) somewher in the range of 4 to 7 percent…

And will be on the upswing…

God help us all; especially older folks on a fixed income…

  58. bh says:

Think I’m done with all this. Best of luck everyone.

    Sláinte.

  59. Ag80 says:

I don’t mean to be rude, but I’ve looked all over the sites I usually visit and this is the first one I’ve found that mentions Al Gore’s reporters being imprisoned by the NKs.

I know that they disagree with me politically, and I know they’re a couple of naive lefties who thought their political thoughts would protect them from any problems.

But, they are Americans and I don’t understand why the conservative blogosphere is not making bigger deal out of this.

Why isn’t Al Gore doing anything? Or the press? What’s going on here? They may be stupid, but good Lord, don’t they deserve the protection of the United States for being stupid?

I know why Gore isn’t doing anything– the stinking coward. But, politics aside, these women deserve some help.

  60. Bob Reed says:

Done for the evening only I hope, bh…

Don’t let the short bus crew get you down, bro…

    Best Wishes

  61. Dan Collins says:

Are you gone, bh? I’m sorry, if so.

Ag80, I think that Malkin’s covered the story of the journalists, among others. I am concerned about them, but there’s very little that we as bloggers can do about this, given the policies of the present administration.

  62. Dan Collins says:

bh, I think that what Rick was saying is that Jeff let them bother him more than he should have. As you point out, that’s easy for a commenter to say. It might seem that way, quite reasonably, I think, to one who hasn’t been through some of the stuff that Jeff has, but then, that’s a long and complicated history, too.

  63. Ag80 says:

    Dan:

I understand where you’re coming from. Bloggers can’t do much.

I’m not a regular visitor to Michelle’s site, but I looked at it after your response, so there is something going on.

Nonetheless, I think that we can do out part to express remorse and shame for an injustice and elevate their plight to the point that it can’t be ignored. Despite that stinking coward Al Gore.

  64. lee says:

    You’re pretty heartless meya.

  65. bh says:

Dan, that’s my reaction, you read it true. Better fifty malicious trolls than an unsympathetic friend.

Anyone who knows Jeff wouldn’t sling a hundredth of this shit. It helps me understand the need for a break from time to time. So, time for a break.

  66. geoffb says:

And I went to Michelle’s site and see she has linked to an “Obamacare” poster contest at Ah, Shoot!

  67. bh says:

I did read this post a few times, Dan. Good stuff.

    Sláinte mhaith.

  68. SBP says:

I did read the link SBP provided, but found a few of the explanations wanting…

Bob: I defer to your expertise in this area. If you get a chance, you might want to repost at O’Brien’s blog thingie-whatever-it-is.

He’s a reporter, not a scientist or engineer, but from what I’ve seen from him in the past he does care about getting it right.

Probably why CNN let him go….

    SFAG: Mendacity as usual.

  69. SBP says:

Hope to see you back soon, bh.

I know how it goes — I’ve taken breaks from this place before myself. I can only imagine what it must be like for Jeff.

  70. bh says:

Thanks, buddy. Bye to other buddies as well. Okay, like REO Speedwagon, time for me to fly.

    Firefox off.

  71. Bob Reed says:

Thank for the suggestion SBP, but by the time I send them a letter to register as a commenter, the topic-du-jour will have changed…

You know, the 24 hour news cycle needs to be fed continuously!

    Thanks for the link anyway!

    Best Wishes

  72. geoffb says:

Whenever things get to be too much in my life, too often lately it seems, this movie and especially this scene bring some perspective back. America is built of tough times, lived through and overcome. We shall do it all, again, as before.

  73. Carin says:

Another story that didn’t really make national news … they found the body of 5 y/o Nevaeh’s body. Mom had two sex offenders as friends.

  74. Carin says:

eliminate one of those “body” words up there. It’s early.

  75. Salt Lick says:

Having Jeff blogging regularly would be great But then again, if he really did take off to go write a book, or do something other than running a blog, it would not be a bad thing.

Not a bad thing? Hell, it would be cockslappingly great if Jeff was writing a book! He’s one of the few public intellectuals in these times who has the intelligence and writing ability to challenge the prevailing orthodoxies in a way that can hit like a ton of bricks. Somewhere in him is a novel which will combine Trollope’s “The Way We Live Now” with “1984” or “Brave New World.” Dude’s got the syrup, but I wonder if blogging might hinder it from pouring.

In the meantime, Dan, you and the others are doing a great job keeping PW going. Kudos to you, Darlene and all the rest.

  76. Pablo says:

    Ag80,

Why isn’t Al Gore doing anything? Or the press?

The press is talking about it, which is pretty much the extent of their ability. Word has it that Manbearpig may be going to DPRK.

They may be stupid, but good Lord, don’t they deserve the protection of the United States for being stupid?

Surely, there are efforts being made behind closed doors. But our direct action options are rather limited.

    SFAG,

Why complain about a regime that sends illegal immigrants to 12 years of labor?

How are they illegal immigrants when they were brought into North Korea by North Korean troops?

Oh, you’re doing fine, Dan, although I also miss Jeff/TSI/Darleen.

Here’s an interesting development if you’re looking for shifts in the political winds — and I apologize if anyone’s pointed this out already, I’m a bit busy this morning:

Got an email this am from XM Radio telling me about their new channels, some interesting stuff. Among them are two new political talk radio channels Sirius Left — “Coast-to-coast liberal talk” — and Sirius Patriot — “Conservatives who aren’t afraid to tell you what they think”. The “Left” v. the “Patriots”. I’m down with that! But the frosting is the “who aren’t afraid” bit, implying that some are afraid, presumably of being silenced?

I probably shouldn’t read too much between the lines, but with the Reuters slam photo of Michelle O. and the New York Senate leadership changing hands.. Well, it does look like attitudes are changing and I can only hope that the trend continues.

  81. guinsPen says:

    Error 404 – Not Found

    Fixed.

    Just the same.

  82. meya says:

Ah see that’s a different story.

  83. guinsPen says:

  84. Dan Collins says:

Oh, I think he invokes George W. Bush even more ;-P

  85. Joe says:

  86. Joe says:

Why are the conservative right doing well in Europe?

    They act like conservatives.

  87. JD says:

Is meya ever not a lying disingenuous fascist?

  88. Danger says:

    Dan,

Ditto on the props for keeping the hope alive

I mentioned the picture at lucianne.com on a different thread but it seems like people are gathered here so I thought it might get a little more notice here.

Over here it is 101 today with blowing sand storm but I am embracing the suck as the army likes to say.

I have seen Jeff destroy trolls like Thor with the flick of a wrist, I think he is probably more distressed by criticism from people that he has more respect for like Patterico and Ace.

  89. serr8d says:

Well, it’s disheartening, really. The blogosphere acts like a herd of beasts, gazelles I think, moving in unison and in lockstep. A thinking man like Jeff prolly wonders, what’s the point? You get in that herd and behave exactly like they do and like they want you to behave, or else you get excluded.

Jeff is not a herd animal. Jeff is Howard Roarke.

  90. Bob Reed says:

    Danger,

    I agree…

And may I say, eff Patterico and Ace…

While I’m sure they’re, ahem, good men, they don’t have the same writing talent as Jeff G…

They could never play his “game”, so to speak; and conversely, he shouldn’t bother to lower himself to try and play theirs. They have dofferent talents and skill sets. We all need to work together to raise the public’s awareness of things that the SRM just won’t report on…

It would be a good start if Patterico lifted the ban on Jeff. And, while I don’t know any details of exchanges with Ace; in my opinion he should consider the source. People won’t always get what Jeff G is sayin’, it’s just a matter of fact, and their limitation completely…

Sorry to hear about the sandstorm…

    Take care of yourself…

  91. Bob Reed says:

    serr8d,

I’m sure that traffic is suffering everywhere; why do you think that Allah and Cap’n Ed adopted the whole “green room” hook if not simply to encourage more links and traffic…

I think that if Jeff were to work with Guys like Mark Levin, on originalism, and maybe even Rush on calling the left on their lies, he moght benefit from more links and the traffic that would come from it…

Might have to beeeyotch slap some of the trolls a bit more firmly though…

  92. Danger says:

    Bob,

Well the sandstorm is supposed to end by tomorrow and I work mostly indoors so life is not so bad (walking to and from work is a challenge though)

I followed the whole Rush Limbaugh / I hope Obama fails discussion and it seems as though Patterico and Jeff came to an agreement. Patterico stated that he believed intentionalism was a valid/correct approach to communications and Jeff agreed that their are exceptions to the approach.

I took my kids to disney for a week and came back and apparently things went south because the two of them aren’t talking any more.

I don’t think that Ace and Jeff had as direct a discussion but Ace was inline with AP at hot air irt the Rush Limbaugh comments.

Unfortunately some conservative bloggers are so worried about becoming like the left that they wont stand up for themselves.

I did see Ace admit in one of his posts that he actually agreed with Rush Limbaugh but that the impolotiks of his comments bothered him.

  93. Bob Reed says:

    I hear you Danger,

And I agree that we need to stand up for ourselves; call the left on their lies and mischaracterizations as Jeff would do. It’s just that we have to ready to rebut the allegations of racist/sexist/hater, etc…

Know those thrusts are coming, have ready rebuttals that are factually correct-and occasionally ones that ridicule your opponents as well. ALthough you have to gauge your audience-so to speak-sometimes sarcasm and ridicule, bounded by fact, can go a long way towards rhetorically defeating your opposition…

Also it’s amusing to often watch them sputter, and forget all of their talking points once rattled…

Take it easy, thanks for the info, and thanks for your service…

Those stats reflect that fact that I don’t have sitemeter on the main page any longer — not a drop in traffic. The sitemeter is only active on the Pub.

  96. Bob Reed says:

I thought those stats were a bit low…

  97. Jeff G. says:

Judging by Alexa, site traffic has improved. Much appreciation.

  98. Jeff G. says:

Oh. And that Ed Whelan apologized to “Publius”? Yet another reason why the left will remain in power.

  99. Joe says:

    You might enjoy this Jeff.

  100. happyfeet says:

I miss sitemeter. I used it a lot cause I just like metadata especially media informatic thingers. This is one of my favorite widgets. They don’t really give you enough data to actually analyze anything but it’s still neat in a sort of longitudinal way.

The Akamai Net Usage Index is the world’s first and only daily Web traffic benchmark that tracks where news is being consumed on a global basis. Akamai, as the content delivery platform for more than 100 global news portal companies, has a unique view into the daily Web traffic of major news sites. Akamai has been in business since 1999, and serves content on behalf of a large majority of the world’s leading online news portals. Distributing over one billion page views daily for these news information sites, Akamai is in the unique position to be able to track news consumption on a global scale. At any point in time, millions of PC users (and increasing numbers of cell phone and other PDA users) are online consuming news.

Following is an explanation of how we measure visitors / minute:

    KEY

V/M = measures current millions of visitors per minute* to aggregate news sites (this number reflects the current rate in each geographic region)

% = measures the percent above or below the average of visitors per minute for that time of day, and day of week, within each geographic region, based on an 8-week average (with data points taken at 5 minute intervals)

    * for each minute, Akamai is measuring the number of visitors that viewed a page or more from news sites during that minute

  101. Jeff G. says:

Follow up: Kudos to all the “principled” right wingers who rushed to publish their condemnations of Whelan, and their OUTRAGE over his willingness to post the name of a guy who routinely personally attacked him by name.

Evidently, it is best to sit back and allow your reputation to be tarnished without consequence if remedying the situation means doing anything as unseemly as putting a name to your attacker so that his reputation, too, becomes part of the equation that sets the sum of yours.

You sure showed Whelan, you protectors of all that is right and good! True, people like Publius can go on trashing our reputations, safe in the knowledge that the right won’t back the play of the people being attacked — especially if they can get well-linked posts out of it — but hey: nobody can question your sense of Fairness and Honor!

    BECAUSE OF THE HYPOCRISY!

  102. mojo says:

So – is this “Publius” mook any less “outed” now that Ed has “apologized”?

Can that genie be shoved back in the bottle, of will the poor, poor law prof now have to live under threat of denial of tenure for aggravated mopery and dopery at whatever low-rent school he teaches at?

    Honestly. Grow some stones, people.

  103. Joe says:

Can that genie be shoved back in the bottle, of will the poor, poor law prof now have to live under threat of denial of tenure for aggravated mopery and dopery at whatever low-rent school he teaches at?

    Nope.

  104. Jeff G. says:

Thanks for the link, Joe. At about 8:35, Levin offers some of the same advice I’ve been pushing. Refreshing to hear, frankly. Means at least some of “our side” aren’t yet buying into The Prince culture and trying to pass it off as pragmatism.

  105. LTC John says:

    Jeff, good to see you…back?

  106. alppuccino says:

Did you make any headway on getting Levin to guest post Jeff?

  107. Dan Collins says:

He thought, “What kind of name is Whelan, for a right-wing Jew?”
    Third-rate law school

    The future of cravenness.

Of course the “victim’s” first mistake was being a victim in the first place. But as a foriegner in some Swiss canton, the foriegner with the most money is going to likely prevail in a legal battle.

Still, here are two examples of dealing with rudeness.

    Nope.

Nope as to shoving that genii back in the bottle. His tenure options are likely fucked now.

  110. Slartibartfast says:

their OUTRAGE over his willingness to post the name of a guy who routinely personally attacked him by name

He didn’t attack Whelan by name, he attacked Whelan by idea. Whelan’s response was to sidestep publius’ point (which, again, went to something Whelan wrote, not who Whelan is), and go after him personally.

If you approve of that, I don’t know you at all.

“Never back down” is only a rational policy if you’re never wrong.

See, if publius had made some disparaging comments about Whelan’s personal appearance, or even expressed some unseemly admiration and/or repugnance over Whelan’s family members, I’d not have much of a problem with exposing the name behind the pseud. But he didn’t do that.

  111. Joe says:

Slartibartfast, that is very well said.

Yes, giving Publius’ name was about retaliation and trying to embarass and hurt him. And it may hurt him professionally on a tenure track.

  112. happyfeet says:

Publius is a dirty socialist academic parasite.

What is probably not gonna get tenure never ever cause of he’s such a dick and everyone knows his name, which, too bad so sad I think.

I like it when dirty socialists get hurt. I like to watch.

  113. Joe says:

Jon Voight does a good job with this.

  114. Makewi says:

Yeah Slart. No personal attacks at all:

For you Whelan fans out there, it’s definitely worth a read to see him so thoroughly embarrassed

And don’t feel sorry for Ed. He knows all this — he’s a smart guy with outstanding legal credentials. He just enjoys playing the role of know-nothing demagogue

  115. B Moe says:

His tenure options are likely fucked now.

Because he was outed as a lefty law professor? Seriously?

  116. Jeff G. says:

Publius attacks people’s character, not their ideas. Fuck him.

  117. happyfeet says:

I thought the funny part was when he trotted out the cya and was all I would never indoctrinate my students because I respect conservative views. No really. I really do.

    Hah.

  118. Jeff G. says:

Yes, giving Publius’ name was about retaliation and trying to embarass and hurt him. And it may hurt him professionally on a tenure track.

I’m sure Publius and Thersites and TRex and Tas and on and on and on are very concerned about how their posts might hurt their named targets professionally and personally. Me, I can’t get enough of Googling myself and finding that I’m an “idiot,” a “racist,” etc.

In fact, I’m sure they lay awake at night worrying how such archiving of names attached to indictments of those sorts might hurt their targets personally and professionally. But in the end, they’re just doing a public service — you know, running down evil right wingers who are a cancer and barely human, anyway. So it’s all good.

Returning the favor, though? Not so much.

Those who don’t want to find themselves on the receiving end of schadenfreude should do their best to avoid luxuriating in it publicly.

  119. Makewi says:

Publius respects conservatives, hf, so I’m sure he would respect their views.

Turns out, I’m not much of a fan of Publius.

  120. happyfeet says:

I’ve had just about enough of these dirty socialists I think.

  121. mojo says:

If you really, really want to be anonymous on the internet, you need to make it a little harder to nail your secret identity than running a simple DNS registration lookup.

    Maybe a mask.

  122. mojo says:

    But no capes!

  123. Jeff G. says:

Online discourse is putrid. And that’s because we don’t demand accountability — except from those who demand accountability. At which point we demand that they not demand it, less they feel the wrath of our OUTRAGE!

    Fuck it all.

I’m not saying I would have “outed” Publius for that particular post. But then, I’m not Whelan, so I won’t presume to judge how he was being made to feel.

Until you’ve been on the receiving end, you just don’t know what it’s like to have your name dragged through the online mud. (Was it hilzoy who was claiming I was pushing for armed insurrection? I don’t recall. I do, however, recall her deriding my work from her stance as an educator, and I was very tempted to seek out her credentials, though I never did.)

His apology is a concession. If you’re going to “out” some prick with a pseudonym, be sure about your reasons, and then stick to your guns when the backlash hits.

  124. Jeff G. says:

Now back to my hidey-hole, so as not to further disillusion Rick or Slart.

The more I appear, the worse, people inevitably discover, I really am.

  125. mojo says:

    To the Armadillo Burrow, Rubin!

  126. happyfeet says:

they have a shield nothing can be revealed I think and I think the drummer is a guy but I’m not 100% on that*

  127. Slartibartfast says:

For you Whelan fans out there, it’s definitely worth a read to see him so thoroughly embarrassed

That’s a personal attack on Whelan? Do you disagree that Whelan was wrong, in his arguments that Supreme Court justices shouldn’t consider policy implications of their decisions? Do you disagree with Eugene Volokh on this point?

This part? Pretty harmless, I think. It’s not as if he called Whelan a huge, gaping fistula.

And don’t feel sorry for Ed. He knows all this — he’s a smart guy with outstanding legal credentials. He just enjoys playing the role of know-nothing demagogue

Yeah, that’s pretty harsh, all right. That’s the most ad-hom thing publius has said, I think.

And what’s he saying? He’s saying: a guy with Whelan’s credentials and experience should, and in fact does know better than to say something as manifestly untrue.

Maybe there’s another possible interpretation; I’m not seeing one, but I’m willing to listen.

  128. Bob Reed says:

The more I appear, the worse, people inevitably discover, I really am.

Actually, in my opinion the direction arrow of that process probably points in the oppositie direction that you’ve indicated…

    Enjoy, Jeff G.

Nice to see you weighing in. Just like we need Levin to call ’em like he sees em, so too do we need you…

I’m telling you, you guys would make a potent combination!

Oh there’d be hand-wringing, coupled with folks callin’ you haters, assholes, etc…

But, it would do the public a much needed good in these days of the Tiger Beat, Obama as BMOC, media…

Indeed, there always needs to be voices of truth calling the liars on their snake oil, and clearing the fog of the propaganda that always ensues when emotion is eith conflated with, or replaces, reason…

Best Wishes to you and yours…

  129. Ric Locke says:

Inconsequential people don’t make many enemies, Jeff.

    Regards,
    Ric

  130. Makewi says:

Yes, an invitation to go see someone be thoroughly embarrassed is a personal attack on that person, especially when the embarrassment is coming at the hands of someone who is using ad homs as Anon Lib was. Further, saying someone plays the role of a know nothing demagogue is exactly a personal attack. Does this mean Whelan should have outed Publius? Not my call, but let’s not pretend that Publius is some sort of saint acting entirely in good faith who was made victim through no fault of his own.

Look, if he isn’t willing to act in a civilized way towards those who are using their real names then why should he expect those he is acting cruel towards to protect his identity?

  131. Pablo says:

People who don’t want their pseudonyms deflated should take great pains to keep a wall between the pseud and their IRL selves. There is no right to have your online privacy respected. If you’re going to throw stones from behind a pseud, you should fully expect that people will be attempting to pierce your veil, avoid behaviors that make that possible and be prepared to be outed despite all that.

If you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.

  132. Pablo says:

Strike privacy and replace it with anonymity.

  133. B Moe says:

If letting your superiors find out who you really are might be detrimental to your career you might ought to spend some time thinking about who you really are.

  134. SBP says:

B Moe, I don’t see that my political views have anything to do with what I do in the classroom.

Unfortunately many of those higher on the food chain have a different POV.

A teacher is what I am, and I’m damned good at it. I’d like to keep doing it if possible.

  135. happyfeet says:

this is like a letter to Ed what says it was goofy, kinda, to apologize to the dirty socialist guy. Maybe more better to have been a shade braver.<a href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN9q-5fPMxg&feature=related”*

My shoes a lot match my hair but my hair is brown so it’s not like a big event.

  136. happyfeet says:

ack I don’t know what to do that went very awry

    here goes nothing

  137. serr8d says:

Whelan’s apology was forced. You can tell he was dragged into an office, the door was closed and he received the riot act.

    It’s a business, after all.

  138. serr8d says:

@146 Ahhh, Kim Carnes. I’ve seen her in concert twice; once during the Bette Davis Eyes tour in what? ’82, and again last year at a private fundraiser.

She hasn’t gained a pound, either.

  139. happyfeet says:

I agree with how forced it sounded. Stilted is the word they use for this sort of thing.

  140. serr8d says:

Here ya go. Kim’s in the black tee; the sweaty guy on the right is Michael McDonald.

  141. sARTANa says:

ED WHELAN DID NOT APOLOGIZE FOR OUTING “PUBLIUS”

In a private email Whelan sent “Publius” which “Publius” then made public, Whelan called “Publius” a coward and an idiot. Whelan later apologized for calling him and idiot.

The apology was contained in a post at National Review Online which you can read here:

    http://tinyurl.com/pm38hh

Whelan still stands by the outing as should anyone with an ounce of sense or at least one functioning testicle.

    THAT’S RIGHT I SAID IT!

  142. happyfeet says:

    she is really tiny

  143. serr8d says:

    she is really tiny

And her voice is better’n a noose.

  144. Slartibartfast says:

Yes, an invitation to go see someone be thoroughly embarrassed is a personal attack on that person

Ok, then. So, someone embarrasses themselves, and it’s maybe my fault for pointing it out?

    Wierd.

  145. Makewi says:

Perhaps I should have said it was a personal attack because the embarrassment was in part due to the ad homs being handed out by anon lib.

  146. Sartana says:

    Stupid me.

I really should check up on the day’s events before I begin posting about them. Although I guess I could be forgiven for believing that one of our societal values that Conservatism fights to uphold is the acknowledgment of a man’s right to defend himself against vicious lies and slander.

    Let me get this straight-

Time Magazine and Carl Levin go public with the names of CIA interrogators and, while its noted on the Right blogosphere, there doesn’t seem to be any great outrage; but when a prominent respected Conservative blogger does the absoulte bare minimum of what he’s allowed in defending his honor and reputation against the slimy attacks of an unhinged anonymous Left-Wing blogger and all “principled” Conservatives agree that they must get together and demand an apology- tout suite.

Where have all the real men gone off to?

Our government has been seized by a cabal of totalitarian Leftists, and the only people of real prominence to oppose them consistently and unapologetically are an old man with a frail heart and his lesbian daughter, and a mother of five from Alaska.

I think that what “principled” Conservatives must be asking now is:

Should Republicans on the Hill be clamoring for Ed Whelan to be the focus of a Congressional investigation into his “outing” of blogger “Publius”.

What would be the “principled” thing to do?

  147. Makewi says:

Be careful Slart, or I’ll out you for the neo-fascist vegan lesbian communist objectivist I secretly know you to be.

  148. JD says:

Why are you such a twit, twat?

  149. Slartibartfast says:

I’ll out you for the neo-fascist vegan lesbian communist objectivist I secretly know you to be.

I suspected you had that preconception about me, you judgmental bastard.

Or, possibly, bitch. On the Internet, no one knows you’re a dog.

  150. JD says:

What is all this outing talk? It is not like JMM, Excitable Andy, the Gleeeeeeens, or Perez were really in the proverbial closet.

  151. Makewi says:

    Wait, Perez Hilton is gay?!?!

    I need to sit down.

  152. JD says:

STFU meya. You are a babbling twat on your good days.

Makewi – Floored me too. You could have pushed me over with a feather.

  153. Pablo says:

On the Internet, no one knows you’re a dog.

That’s not nearly as true as it used to be.

  154. Slartibartfast says:

Oh. Well, I for one am not a dog.

    NOT. A. DOG.

  155. guinsPen says:

    By who? Jonah?

I believe K-Lo wears the Neuticles in that family.

  156. serr8d says:

For that reason, I recognize that Publius may understandably regard my apology as inadequate.

    Decoded:

“Publius, you sack of ape shit what was previously digested by a Chacoan Peccary, don’t take this ‘apology’ seriously. I’m actually laughing uproariously and getting a world of new readers to boot. FOAD.”

  157. Joe says:

    Whelan did apologize.
