Big Brother, Wisconsin [Dan Collins]

Wisconsin police can attach GPS to cars to secretly track anybody’s movements without obtaining search warrants, an appeals court ruled Thursday.

However, the District 4 Court of Appeals said it was “more than a little troubled” by that conclusion and asked Wisconsin lawmakers to regulate GPS use to protect against abuse by police and private individuals.

As the law currently stands, the court said police can mount GPS on cars to track people without violating their constitutional rights — even if the drivers aren’t suspects.

Officers do not need to get warrants beforehand because GPS tracking does not involve a search or a seizure, Judge Paul Lundsten wrote for the unanimous three-judge panel based in Madison.

It’s all fun and games until some jealous cop uses one to track his girlfriend to a rendezvous and kills a couple of people. Then there will be hand-wringing and sorrow, because it wasn’t foreseeable.

You can expect a lot more of this sort of thing, now that Boooooooosh is in the White House, trampling the Constitution.

It would be OK if I were to put them on cop cars and track their locations then, right?

Oh, for real fun, Pablo, you’d put them on all government vehicles and the private vehicles of politicians.

This is another one of those things where what’s legal is getting confused with whether this is something not-nazi people do. That seems to be happening a lot since that dickhead got hisself elected.

How long before GPS trackers are mandatory in all vehicles?

Once they start taxing by the mile driven, so they can make sure the states get their proper cuts.

A court in New York, of all places, has ruled against this tactic and freed a thief who was convicted after the police tracked his vehicle via GPS for a few months. In New York, they need a warrant.

    Freedom isn’t quite dead yet.

Or we’re short of thieves, and need to incent some to move in. After they drove most industry out, there’s not much left to steal anyway.

But it’s kind of sad New York has to be the “good” example…
