    I hope we don’t merely deal with Iraq by replacing Saddam with whichever of his generals survives long enough to take over the reins of power. Since we are going to have to deal with the Saudis eventually, it seems to me we’d be in a far better position to do so if we have an occupation force in Iraq, lots of baes there, and our hands on the Iraqi oil spigot. We’d be in a better position to deal with Yasser, too, and might find the occasion to look in on Syria and Iran.  A simple “regime change”, although emotionally satisfying, leaves us strategically in the same position we are now.
