Obama Gets His Tamp On [Dan Collins]

Gee, it’s really terrible the way Eric Holder’s statements on race have been taken out of context and twisted:

President Barack Obama has waded again into the fractious issue of race relations in America, this time to tamp down a firestorm over remarks by his top law enforcement officer.”I’m not somebody who believes that constantly talking about race somehow solves racial tensions,” the president said in an interview with The New York Times published Sunday.

“I think what solves racial tensions is fixing the economy, putting people to work, making sure that people have health care, ensuring that every kid is learning out there.

“I think if we do that, then we’ll probably have more fruitful conversations,” Obama said.

His comments came in response to a speech last month by US Attorney General Eric Holder, the first African-American to hold the post, chiding Americans for being “cowards on race.”

“I think it’s fair to say that if I had been advising my attorney general, we would have used different language,” Obama said.

When asked whether he agreed with Holder’s remarks, the president hesitated for five seconds, the daily said, before giving his most extensive comments on America’s racial disharmony since his own long discourse on the subject last year.

Fortunately, Holder’s remarks were neither incendiary nor ugly.

    TelePrompter blew a fuse?

  3. Sdferr says:

Firestorm? I was surprised at how muted comment had been just after he made the remarks. Has it picked up recently and I haven’t noticed?

  4. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Is it racist to use the term “Mongolian clusterfuck” in conjunction with this administration?

  5. Joe says:

I did not think Holders’ comments incendiary or ugly, just irrelevant at this point.

Yes there is still racism and injustice in this country, but compared to the rest of the world, the United States is actually doing pretty well compared to most. Anyone who has done any traveling knows that racism is prevalent everywhere (including that Nirvana known as Europe). And when you have a black President and a black Attorney General, excuse me for not equating times now to the civil rights marches of the 1960s.

Funny, I was under the impression that the AG worked for the President.

Just get under the damn bus, Eric.

  7. Abe Froman says:

I’ve never really understood why lefties think Americans are cowardly about discussing race when the same people invest so much effort into intimidating people who do… even if it means finding racial connotations to likening the congress to chimps.

  8. Joe says:

Now Eric, stay away from these things.

  9. Abe Froman says:

Meant to write “in likening the congress to chimps.”

  10. Joe says:

“…even if it means finding racial connotations to likening the congress to chimps.”

But Abe, chimps are dangerous. So is congress.

  11. Techie says:

“I think what solves racial tensions is fixing the economy, putting people to work, making sure that people have health care, ensuring that every kid is learning out there.”

Yeah. As soon as this economy and health caring improves, Its no more nigger-hatin’ for me.

I’m counting the days till I can get over my flaming hatred of non-whites. I sure hope Brakabama succeeds! If not, there’s gonna be a giant stack of fucked-up niggers, spics and slopes as a result of his economic plan.

    Just sayin’.

  15. Carin says:

Chris Buckley doesn’t regret his vote:

Well, my friend, you got me. I’ll cop to getting Obama wrong, though it seems a bit early to give up on him entirely; who knows, perhaps he’ll view this egregious budget misstep as a “teachable moment.”

    Hope and Change!

  16. blankminde says:

Racism is a red herring. If a white person said what President Obama said, “I think what solves racial tensions is fixing the economy, putting people to work, making sure that people have health care, ensuring that every kid is learning out there” people would be calling them a racist. Solution? Let’s start regarding racism for the political canard it is. When people talk about race, maybe conservatives need to cue in on that as them teeing up for bullshit time. Otherwise we should all start preparing to be compared to racists since that’s the outcome liberals want.

why lefties think Americans are cowardly about discussing race when the same people invest so much effort into intimidating people who do

Replace “think” with “say” — a good idea in any case — and you got yourself some cause and effect right there.

For example! The man who said

I’m not somebody who believes that constantly talking about race somehow solves racial tensions

has to his credit one windy, overlong autobiography whose theme is his [cough] struggle to [ahem] forge an identity that’s racially [uh] pure.

    Good man.

  18. McGehee says:

    FTFY.

    Start?

I trust what you mean is, “Let’s awaken the rest of the people out there to what a political canard racism is.”

    In which case, yeah.

  20. blankminde says:

    @20 McGehee
Well yeah…sort of. Can you name anyone that responded to accusations of racism by telling their accusers to go fuck themselves? I can’t think of a single conservative that has had the gall to make it clear that they are being intentionally painted as racists in order to shift the argument into one that liberals can win. Racism is mostly bullshit that gets trotted out to condemn people that weren’t actually being racist, but why aren’t the people getting nailed with this responding appropriately? “You are lying. Stop painting me as a racist. Grow some balls and debate me on the issues rather than your conjured bogeymen.” Where is that congressman? Who the hell says “bogeymen”?

Yeah. That’s the word I was looking for. “Irrelevant”. Black president and AG and race card still being played in a speech by said AG and it’s irrelevant.

    Hey Joe,

When will the white people finally square things with all descendants and black non-descendants of slaves and take a turn on the whipping post? Oh wait…..they’re there now! Now, how many years of slavery should the whites endure before things are all good?

  24. The Obvious says:

alppuccino: I am guessing 400 years will do it. Of course Barack Obama has zero slave heritage himself.

I do not want to make light of racism, anti Semitism, or any type of unrational religious or racial bigotry. It is real and it is something everyone needs to work on. But before we get to solving that issue, I want to see Barack Obama fix the economy. All I have seen is him trying pretty hard to destroy it. Then he can work on energy independence and manufacturing trade balances. And once he gets done with that, then he can focus on racism and get that completely solved (in the whole world) before he trys tackling global warming.

  29. MikeD says:

Six weeks into this black comedy disaster (no pun intended!) and I have been hard pressed to describe what was going on. I searched high and low for an accurate, rational explanation, something, no…. ANYTHING to characterize what has been unfolding before our dismayed and incredulous gaze. Then … there it was.. the perfect descriptor!! Thank you SBP, the perfect and most precise characterization yet of this administration–a Mongolian clusterfuck!! Thank you sir. Jeff will be proud of your precise employment of language. I am, and now, finally, I feel I know what is going on. Cudos! Cudos! You could not be more succinct or more correct!

  30. section9 says:

Quite the contrary! Far from “Having a Conversation About Race”, this guy and the Movement Liberals around him are going to turn into the greatest recruiters Tom Metzger and the Mighty Whities ever had. Sad, but true-since the Socialism of Fools is all the rage on the Left these days.

Wonder if Ron Paul will show up to the party and start going on about the Gold Standard and Fiat Currency.

  33. geoffb says:

“Firestorm”? Of course it is. Someone accurately quoted what a top Democrat said, in context. Then someone quietly disagreed with the quote. That in the Progressive Newspeak is a “Firestorm”.

What Joe the plumber did was a Nuclear Attack. What happened later was only a defensive counterstrike.

If Holder or Obama were to get the same treatment as, say Rush, in the major press and TV, that could then only be comparable to a concert by Disaster Area for total effect.

I am so completely feeling sorry for any poor slob who is working for Obama. There wasn’t anything *wrong* with what Holder said no matter how many of us disagreed. And sure, a whole lot of people did disagree a whole lot and gave him heck for it. But Obama can’t even, or doesn’t see the need to back up his own people. Is he under some delusion that because he’s the “boss” that they have to have HIS back but he doesn’t have to have THEIRS?

““I think it’s fair to say that if I had been advising my attorney general, we would have used different language,” Obama said.”

    Wow.

Is it any wonder his not-yet-appointed appointees are bailing?

Anyone taking odds on how long until Hillary tells him where to stuff it, resigns, and hits the lecture circuit?

  38. daleyrocks says:

““I think it’s fair to say that if I had been advising my attorney general, we would have used different language,” Obama said.”

Barack can’t advise everybody at once. He’s a very busy guy. See the other thread. He hasn’t really had a chance yet to seriously fuck up foreign policy yet. It’s only been six weeks or so. Do people expect miracles?

  39. B Moe says:

    Do people expect miracles?

I have started to pray for one.

  40. Synova says:

Obama *shouldn’t* be advising everyone he hires.

Yes, he’s busy. So? The point of hiring an attorney general is so that a competent person is in charge of that area of responsibility. It’s called delegating.

He’s effing up this badly six weeks in because he won’t let anyone do their jobs… he’s got to “advise” and approve decisions and make sure everything is being done the way he needs it to be done.

He pulls the Census in because it’s *important*. He countermands Hillary’s announcement about ambassadors and then sends her globe-trotting instead of getting the State Dept ducks in a row. His appointees are bailing, Gupta (IIRC) because he feared he wouldn’t be allowed a strong role in whatever health reform happens, that Republican guy because he wouldn’t be in charge of his own department, and whoever else… and Obama makes jokes about Biden in front of reporters and now makes some lame remark about how Holder just isn’t that good at using language.

His entire administration is going to go into “Mother, may I” mode and be standing in line for hall passes to the john.

I wonder whose head got bitten off for that one.

Then with the US having thousands of young people who are bilingual in Russian and English, it seems weird that they couldn’t get “reset” right… and I’m sure Hillary sent someone home via Vladivostok.
I don’t know Russian, but when I heard this one i wondered if reset tranlates from english to russian more literally as recharge or chargeover. which makes the whole “overcharge” which was assumed by Hillary to be economic a double gaffe

  46. SteveG says:

I guess i could have found the article that explained the Russian… but has anyone called that prop the “smart power button” yet?

  47. Two Dogs says:

I guess by Barry saying that he really doesn’t want to talk about race, he is saying that he hopes “Dreams From My Father” FAILS? Geez, that could have been written by Robert Byrd. Oh, but Barry was just so, so young when he wrote it, you know, thirty-three is YOUNG.

  48. thirty-three is YOUNG.

yes… yes it is. and this time next week it will be 34. 34 IS YOUNG I TELL YOU!!!

  49. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:
