I’m Certainly Not Posting This [Dan Collins]

if we lot can’t be kind, but Justice Ginsberg is undergoing surgery for pancreatic cancer, which, to speak in the vernacular of the peasantry, is a bitch. So, best wishes to Justice Ginsberg.

And if anybody thinks that’s in any way satisfying, a) fuck off and b) consider the likely replacements.

Of course, cancer is even more tragic when it strikes the young.

I know what you’re thinking. “Did he fire six shots or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

There had always been an England.

Leon panetta is Italian for “lion sandwich.”

Etta pans bouncy, not my president. (h/t Big Hollywood)

Obama cleans up Washington one nominee at a time, lien on me edition

Get a little action in.

It’s a hard ride, now.

  1. Pablo says:

Eeewww. Pancreatic cancer is nasty indeed. Best wishes for a smooth road forward. Oh, and Bernadine Dohrn. Or Glenda Hatchett. Or Oprah.

  2. Best wishes to her & her family.

  3. cranky-d says:

I’m not a big fan of her rulings, as she tends to want to make decisions based upon “world opinion” rather than strict constructionism, but my desire for her and others that I don’t agree with is that they retire and live out long lives doing other things that make them happy and fulfilled. Best wishes for her and her family.

  4. Techie says:

Best wishes to her and hers of course.

The additional problem is that she will probably have to resign for health reasons. Pancreatic cancer isn’t something you work around. Can Obama take the strain of pushing his Spendulus Bill AND a SCOTUS battle simultaneously?

  5. Hadlowe says:

Best wishes to her and her family.

On the replacement, I’m sure Bobby Rush will come forward to demand that her spot be filled by another woman.

  6. mojo says:

PanCan is indeed nasty, and likely fatal. Good luck to her.

  7. SarahW says:

She won’t be able to continue to serve; and I’m sorry for her and her family.

I have no idea who would be on O’s short list. I can’t imagine a replacement who could have less partisanship or less strict respect of the constitution, but sink me if O won’t find such a one.

  8. SarahW says:

Or maybe this is Hillary’s big chance. Which would be something of an improvement.

  9. Benedick says:

Nobody should have to go out like that.

  10. N. O'Brain says:

I hates cancer, I just lost a brother-in-law to it.

Alla best to Justice Ginsberg, may she return to full health.

  11. JohnAnnArbor says:

There are some rare varieties of pancreatic cancer that aren’t fast killers; I think Steve Jobs had one variety like that. Here’s hoping she does, too.

I read somewhere that she and Scalia always spend New Years Eve together watching TV. No idea where I read it, though.

  12. Rob Crawford says:

It sucks to be mortal. Here’s hoping she recovers fully.

  13. SarahW says:

#11 – pancreatic cancer killed my grandfather. The only blessing in his case was the rapidity of demise.

Even despite the closer attention to her health in her case that could optimize outcome, she’s unlikely to have one of the survivable forms at her age.

  14. Techie says:

You know, Dan, you can break these up into multiple posts. I don’t see what the other links have to do with SCOTUS or Justice Ginsberg.

  15. Dan Collins says:

Sorry, Techie. It’s a links round-up kind of thing.

I thought that the second one made for a sad kind of contrast, considering how it wasn’t much of a big deal, apparently.

  16. SarahW says:

One name I’m seeing kicked around is that of Elena Kagan (the Harvard Law dean).

  17. Bob Reed says:

Having lost one of my uncles to pancreatic cancer last year I can attest to just how quickly it can cause a seemingly robust and healthy individual to wither and expire…

Here’s hoping the doctors caught it early enough to prevent Justice Ginsberg from sharing his fate…

I wish her a speedy and full recovery

  18. Jeffersonian says:

I lost my mother to pancreatic cancer in 2002. She died one year to the day from when she was diagnosed. I know she was in a lot of pain, but she was a woman every bit as stoic and tough as those in Dan’s “England” link. She spent a lot of time around her grandkids up to the last three weeks or so, and still looked good. That last year was a gift.

I hope Justice Ginsberg retires as soon as possible from the Court and spends her remaining time with those who delight in her company. I pray for her recovery or, should this not be God’s will, her vitality and lucidity for as long as possible to enjoy her family and they her presence.

  19. Bob Reed says:

I say let Reid pass the bill if he has the votes…

    Let them Own! it…

  20. cranky-d says:

I agree with Bob. Let them pass this piece of crap. It can be all theirs. And any Republican that votes for it should be booted out ASAP.

  21. happyfeet says:

Baracky’s phony-assed stimulus is not the action real Americans need and even the stupid socialist Washington Post says it’s a plan only a confused dipshit could have come up with.

  22. Mikey NTH says:

It’s a jihad world after all,
It’s a jihad world after all,
It’s a jihad world after all,
    It’s a jihad, jihad world!

  23. Dan Collins says:

I found the part that said

The writer is president of the United States

    especially informative

  24. Techie says:

[The president dismissed calls by Republicans for more tax cuts to be included in the stimulus plan.

“Those ideas have been tested and they have failed,” said Obama today as he addressed Department of Energy employees at their headquarters in Washington. “The scale and scope of this plan is the right one.”]

Didn’t this asshole campaign on “Giving 95% of Americans a tax cut”, or did I just imagine that part?

  25. Carin says:

    OT/This just in:

BILL PRESS: Yeah, I mean look: They have a right to say that. They’ve got a right to express that. But, they should not be the only voices heard. So, is it time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine?

SENATOR DEBBIE STABENOW (D-MI): I think it’s absolutely time to pass a standard. Now, whether it’s called the Fairness Standard, whether it’s called something else – I absolutely think it’s time to be bringing accountability to the airwaves. I mean, our new president has talked rightly about accountability and transparency. You know, that we all have to step up and be responsible. And, I think in this case, there needs to be some accountability and standards put in place.

BILL PRESS: Can we count on you to push for some hearings in the United States Senate this year, to bring these owners in and hold them accountable?

SENATOR DEBBIE STABENOW (D-MI): I have already had some discussions with colleagues and, you know, I feel like that’s gonna happen. Yep.

  26. kelly says:

Can Obama take the strain of pushing his Spendulus Bill AND a SCOTUS battle simultaneously?

Is this a trick question? What battle? With the Dem majority and a few *cough* Republicans *cough* McCain* in the Senate, Barry could nominate Bill Ayers and he’d get the gig.

Best wishes for Justice Ginsberg, anyway.

  27. Techie says:

    Carin’s post translated:

Rush shall pay dearly for his insolence to The One Lightworker.

  28. Slartibartfast says:

    especially informative

Oh, that Barack Obama! I wasn’t sure.

  29. Carin says:

Techie – they’re going to bring those radio station owners in and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. They’re not gonna go after Rush, just the station owners who buy his product. Will they fall like a house of cards?

I mean, a battle with Rush? They’d have no chance.

  30. Rob Crawford says:

Didn’t this asshole campaign on “Giving 95% of Americans a tax cut”, or did I just imagine that part?

You imagined it. Obama has always said tax cuts fail. It’s not your money, after all. It’s not your labor. It’s the governments, to do with as they please.

  31. Slartibartfast says:

I think Geddy Lee could take them all on, solo. If Neal Peart pitched in, it’d be carnage.

    What?

  32. cranky-d says:

Let’s face it, if they cannot control the narrative everywhere, they know they will, in the long run, be defeated. At least until they have co-opted about 10% more of the population.

  33. Rob Crawford says:

You know, that we all have to step up and be responsible. And, I think in this case, there needs to be some accountability and standards put in place.

Except for politicians. “Accountability” and “standards” are not to be applied to, for example, web pages that collect credit card information for campaign donations. Political speech? Sure!

  34. Carin says:

I’m sure Neal Peart would go all Ayn Rand on their asses, Slart.

  35. Rob Crawford says:

Techie – they’re going to bring those radio station owners in and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. They’re not gonna go after Rush, just the station owners who buy his product. Will they fall like a house of cards?

Ayep. They’ll have “community standards boards” that let stations know if they’re programming is acceptable.

It’d be interesting to see their reactions if an “urban” station lost its license after it was found to be acting against the community interests. I have a feeling there will be some very odd exceptions to whatever “standards” and “accountability” they develop.

  36. Carin says:

I swear, I’m gonna devote the next few years of my life to making sure loses her next election; 2012. I’ve got a bit of time.

    She’s an idiot.

  37. DarthRove says:

I think our Lightworker should appoint himself to SCOTUS if the opening should arise. It would get him out of the White House, and He is after all a brilliant Constitutional scholar-type guy. Plus it would help Him with that consolidation of power dealio that socialist people like so much.

  38. Carin says:

I gotta go work out before I blow an artery.

  39. TheGeezer says:

And, I think in this case, there needs to be some accountability and standards put in place.

Translated: “We will regulate what othres can say about us, because we are liberal Democrats and fear the liberty of others.”

This is curious in that satellite radio and HD AM and FM have made programming all the available air time a real problem. I mean, for example, local off-air (free) HD TV. Maybe twenty channel and subchannel combinations, with most rerunning Charlie’s Angels and crap like that. Available air time on HD radio is the same. Rush could probably buy air time in most major markets on HD subchannels that sound better than the main channel of the licensee, and perhaps pocket more income as a result of the switch. Within a few months Rush fans would either have HD radio boxes, or tuners, or they’d have internet streaming audio receivers…this attempt by liberal Democrats to suppress free political speech will fail.

  40. cockslapper2000 says:

And if anybody thinks that’s in any way satisfying, a) fuck off and b) consider the likely replacements.

You read my mind Dan. I don’t mind who replaces that awful woman, as long as it’s not an another affirmative action darkie, or God forbid – an Irish Papist.

  41. Techie says:

BTW: SecLabor nominee’s husband just paid 16 years worth of back taxes. Whoops, guess he forgot.

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-02-05-solis-husband-taxes_N.htm

Who the hell is running this Administration?!?!?!

  42. Rob Crawford says:

Geezer — any over-the-air transmission will likely come under whatever “standards” they impose. It’ll be cable or internet that’s left, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they do their damnedest to bring some “accountability” there as well.

  43. Rob Crawford says:

    Moby in aisle 40!

  44. David R. Block says:

I dunno. In smaller markets, localism is doomed. Not enough revenue to keep them afloat locally without inclusion in the national advertising buys. And that’s pretty much across the AM-FM-TV board. A 100 KW FM station has a heck of a power bill no matter where they are. There are some in communities of less than 100,000 and those will be hurtin’ for certain.

So if O! wants massive media failure they can go ahead. Doesn’t make me want to watch or listen to the survivors. My car CD player is great and even play MP3 CDs. Fine if they carry Rush, not so hot if they worshipped The One. They really need to think about that one. In some places the Rush carrier also owns stations with alternatives. They may all go under.

  45. cranky-d says:

The fact that they have no legal jurisdiction to regulate cable or internet content will not matter to them, of course. It’ll be for The Children™ or something like that.

  46. Techie says:

New Gallup numbers out. Seems only ~38% want the Spendulus bill passed in it’s current form. (To be fair, ~37% responded “Pass with major alterations”, whatever those might be)

Does that make them the 38percenters?

Of course, I also wish Justie Ginsberg well, though I sincerely doubt she reads Protein Wisdom. I’m more interested (because I’m clueless about liberal jurists) who many of you think would be on the short for the One to put onto the court. I think its almost a given one of the elder justices will either die or retire in the next 4 years and while I know it was a major campaign theme, I’ve heard very few names bandied about besides the Harvard dean and (/scowls) Hillary Clinton.

Thoughts (as a sympathy card at PW seems kinda wasted since no lib will believe repubs can possibly be sympathetic to a dying person- we’re bad bad people, dont ya know).

  51. N. O'Brain says:

“I’m more interested (because I’m clueless about liberal jurists) who many of you think would be on the short for the One to put onto the court.”

    Taxes are for darkworkers.

  55. Techie says:

“There’s no way anyone can spend $800 to $900 billion quickly without waste and boondoggles. It comes with the Keynesian territory. This is an emergency; the normal rules do not apply.”

    From: http://www.newsweek.com/id/183204

Would this be considered the politics of fear? Could our fears be used against us? What about “talking down the economy”?

  56. RC says:

Early opportunity to appoint Bill Clinton to the court, he’s been sucking up for something high power and UN SG was out of the question. Then Hillary appoints the O!Messiah in 8 years and her successor appoints her. Full house the bad guys win the pot that we will no longer have to piss in.

  57. Jeffersonian says:

And I hope Nishi is off reading Jerry Pournelle these days:

The debate on the “Stimulus” bill goes on. It is the largest spending bill in the history of the world. It is also clear that whatever this is, it is not an economic stimulus package; it’s not going to rescue the economy, and it’s not really anything like the WPA which at least produced buildings and roads and trails and some long term infrastructure changes.

Were it confined to buying products, building roads, it might make sense; but this isn’t sensible at all. When Paulson proposed a $750 billion buyout of toxic assets as an emergency measure it might or might not have made sense if done quickly; but this doesn’t do that. This seems like a long wish list of projects that many think would be very nice, but which we never could have afforded when we were prosperous, leavened with some projects that seem ludicrous on their face; and none of it looks to be geared to retiring the toxic packages that caused the problems in the first place.

  58. cockslapper2000 says:

New Gallup numbers out. Seems only ~38% want the Spendulus bill passed in it’s current form. (To be fair, ~37% responded “Pass with major alterations”, whatever those might be)

These so-called “polls” are all liberal MSM constructs. We need only to refer to the most recent election for proof of their vile fallacies.

  59. Rob Crawford says:

I don’t think anyone associated with this Administration pays taxes.

It really is one of those things that takes your breath away. We’ve got people who lectured us about how paying exorbitant taxes is “patriotic” who failed to pay their own taxes. We’ve got people who attacked an average Joe (heh) for a grand or two in owed taxes making excuses for folks who owed into the six figures, for folks who signed a paper acknowledging they owed certain taxes, and then simply “forgot” to pay them.

  60. Rob Crawford says:

  64. happyfeet says:

oh. Kay Bailey should do fine if she runs for Governor. Don’t worry about Texas. It’s in pretty good shape. You should worry more about California and New York and Michigan I think. Bless their hearts. They had no idea this self-governance thing would involve math. It’s not fair not fair not fair I think but in the end that doesn’t help much.

  65. Matt says:

Why would the Lightbringer need to step down as POTUS to join the Court. Quite frankly, if anyone can straddle two branches of government like a colloses, its Messiahbama.

Imagine the conversation with CJ Roberts. “Well Roberts I understand you’re chief justice but I’m the president so I’ll write the opinion. Or somebody from my staff will. Maybe that kid that molested the blowup doll of Hillary Clinton”.

  66. kelly says:

  68. Techie says:

Face it, it’s a Vetting train wreck.

Fully ONE QUARTER of The Lightworker’s nominees to his cabinet have tax issues. That’s not even counting Richardson and Killener. His AG helped get Marc Rich and some FALN terrorist pardoned, and his SecState is married to a walking pile of “Conflict of Interest” issues.

What about all the experience? All that executive ability? This was funny for the first week, now I’m just getting more worried.

On a more serious note, when you’re living in a little country, as indeed we are, where your pezzydent’s spokesperson feels compelled to say that “The White House believes that if you owe taxes you should pay them,” as indeed he did, that is NOT a good sign. It is not a hopey sign. It is not a changey sign. It is a dirty socialist no-experience-having dipshit is in your White House sign what means your little country is in no small amount of trouble really.

You have to realize, we are expected to believe he is talking about the effect of tax cuts on the country. He isn’t. What he is actually saying is tax cuts have been tried and “failed” (to advance the objectives of the Progressive/Socialist elite of the Democratic Party). “The scale and scope of this plan is the right one” (to advance those objectives).

You can’t understand the play without the proper dictionary. None of the top Democrats speak “our” English. It’s a Newspeak version.

  77. Techie says:

“and the Republican party is responsible for racking up every single penny of America’s current $10 trillion debt.”

Republicans controlled Congress for, what, 12 years out of the last 75?

  135. happyfeet says:

I believe that would be the legislative branch, Rob, and it’s a good thing too. Baracky has never managed anything with a budget before. 140. Rob Crawford says:
